Immediate Denture, Mandibular
Steps Involved in IVF:
Procedure Description
Immediate dentures are a type of dental prosthesis provided immediately after tooth extraction. They are commonly used in cases where patients require the removal of all lower teeth (mandibular arch) and want a full denture in place without waiting for the healing process to complete. This process allows the patient to have functional teeth immediately, avoiding the inconvenience of living without teeth for a long duration. These dentures are typically pre-fabricated before the extraction and fitted right after the removal of the teeth.
For mandibular dentures, the procedure begins with a detailed dental examination and assessment of the lower jaw. Molds or impressions are taken of the existing teeth or gumline before extraction. Dentists use these molds to create the immediate dentures, ensuring a close fit to the patient's natural dental structure. Once the dentures are prepared, the dentist extracts the necessary teeth, cleans the area, and fits the immediate dentures over the surgical sites.
It is important to note that immediate dentures are often considered a temporary solution. As the gums and jawbone heal, the bone structure and tissue begin to shrink, which can lead to the denture becoming loose. Once healing is complete (typically after a few months), patients often need to have their dentures relined or replaced to ensure a proper and comfortable fit. Immediate dentures serve the dual purpose of protecting the gums while allowing the patient to maintain the function and aesthetics of teeth during the healing phase.
Procedure Duration
The process of receiving immediate mandibular dentures occurs in several stages. Before the actual tooth extraction, an initial consultation is necessary to assess the patient’s overall oral health. During this visit, impressions of the teeth and jaw are taken, and measurements are made. The fabrication of the dentures usually takes several weeks, depending on the complexity of the patient's dental structure.
On the day of the procedure, the dentist will extract the lower teeth and place the immediate denture. This procedure can typically take between one to two hours, depending on the number of teeth being extracted and the complexity of the case. After placement, the patient may experience swelling and discomfort, which can last a few days. Pain management and medications to reduce swelling are often prescribed.
Recovery time can vary, but the initial healing process usually takes a few weeks. During this period, follow-up appointments are critical to ensure the denture fits properly and does not cause irritation or sore spots on the gums. Over the next few months, as the gums and bone heal and reshape, the patient will need adjustments or relining of the dentures. Complete healing can take anywhere from three to six months, at which point permanent adjustments or new dentures may be necessary.
Benefits
- Immediate Functionality: Patients can have teeth immediately after extraction, allowing them to speak, eat, and smile without interruption.
- Protection for Gums: The denture serves as a protective barrier for the healing gum tissue, reducing the risk of infection and promoting faster recovery.
- Aesthetic Appeal: Immediate dentures help maintain the facial structure and appearance, preventing the sunken look that can occur when teeth are missing.
- Psychological Comfort: Avoids the emotional and social stress associated with being toothless, as patients maintain their smile and normal appearance.
- Prevents Bone Loss: The denture helps to support the jawbone and reduce bone loss that can occur following tooth extraction.

Risks & Considerations
- Fit Issues: As the gums and jawbone heal, the dentures may become loose, requiring frequent adjustments or relining for comfort and proper function.
- Soreness: Immediate dentures can cause irritation and soreness as the mouth heals, necessitating follow-up visits for adjustments.
- Bone Resorption: Over time, the jawbone may shrink after tooth extraction, affecting the fit and stability of the dentures.
- Temporary Solution: Immediate dentures often serve as a temporary measure until a permanent set of dentures can be fitted after the healing process.
- Infection Risk: Although rare, there is a possibility of infection, especially if the patient does not follow post-operative care instructions diligently.
How to Choose the Right Doctor and Hospital
Choosing the right doctor and hospital for immediate dentures is crucial for achieving a successful outcome. First and foremost, patients should seek out dentists or prosthodontists with experience in immediate denture procedures. It is important to verify the qualifications, certifications, and years of practice of the professional, ensuring they specialize in denture fabrication and fitting.
The hospital or clinic should be well-equipped with modern dental technologies and follow stringent sterilization protocols to minimize the risk of infection. Additionally, patients should inquire about post-operative care services, as regular follow-ups are necessary for adjusting the dentures during the healing process. By choosing an experienced dentist and a clinic with a strong track record in dental prosthetics, patients can ensure optimal results for their immediate mandibular dentures.

Frequently Asked Questions
What actually happens during hyperstimulation of the ovaries?
The patient will take injectable FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) for eight to eleven days, depending on how long the follicles take to mature. This hormone is produced naturally in a woman’s body causing one egg to develop per cycle. Taking the injectable FSH causes several follicles to develop at once, at approximately the same rate. The development is monitored with vaginal ultrasounds and following the patient’s levels of estradiol and progesterone. FSH brand names include Repronex, Follistim, Menopur, Gonal-F and Bravelle. The patient injects herself daily.
What happens during egg retrieval?
When the follicles have developed enough to be harvested, the patient attends an appointment where she is anesthetized and prepared for the procedure. Next, the doctor uses an ultrasound probe to guide a needle through the vaginal wall and into the follicle of the ovary. The thin needle draws the follicle fluid, which is then examined by an embryologist to find the eggs. The whole process takes about 20 minutes.
What happens to the eggs?
In the next step, the harvested eggs are then fertilized. If the sperm from the potential father, or in some cases, anonymous donor, has normal functionality, the eggs and sperm are placed together in a dish with a nutrient fluid, then incubated overnight to fertilize normally. If the sperm functionality is suboptimal, an embryologist uses Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection to inject a single sperm into a single egg with an extremely precise glass needle. Once fertilization is complete, the embryos are assessed and prepared to be transferred to the patient’s uterus.
How are the embryos transferred back to the uterus?
The doctor and the patient will discuss the number of embryos to be transferred. The number of successfully fertilized eggs usually determines the number of eggs to be placed in the uterus. Embryos are transferred to the uterus with transabdominal ultrasound guidance. This process does not require anesthesia, but it can cause minor cervical or uterine discomfort. Following transfer, the patient is advised to take at least one days bed rest and two or three additional days of rest, then 10 to 12 days later, two pregnancy tests are scheduled to confirm success. Once two positive tests are completed, an obstetrical ultrasound is ordered to show the sac, fetal pole, yolk sac and fetal heart rate.
Embryoscope©
Built into this technology there is a microscope with a powerful camera that allows the uninterrupted monitoring of the embryo during its first hours of life. In this way, we can keep a close eye on the embryo, from the moment when the oocyte is inseminated and begins to divide into smaller and smaller cells, until it can be transferred to the uterus.
