Thermage®

Steps Involved in IVF:

Procedure Description

Thermage® is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure that uses radiofrequency (RF) energy to tighten and contour the skin. Unlike surgical procedures, Thermage® does not involve incisions or needles. Instead, it works by delivering RF energy deep into the skin’s layers, heating the underlying tissues and stimulating collagen production. Collagen, a natural protein in the body, is essential for maintaining skin elasticity and firmness. As we age, collagen production decreases, which leads to wrinkles and sagging skin. Thermage® is designed to counteract these signs of aging, producing a lifted and toned appearance.

The Thermage® procedure is often performed on areas of the face, neck, and body that are prone to laxity and wrinkles. Common treatment areas include the forehead, cheeks, jawline, and eyelids. In body treatments, Thermage® is used to smooth and tighten loose skin on the arms, abdomen, and thighs. The treatment is customized to the patient’s skin type, specific concerns, and goals. By adjusting the settings on the Thermage® device, the practitioner can ensure that the RF energy penetrates to the ideal depth for the desired results.

During the procedure, a handheld device is used to deliver RF energy to the targeted areas. The device has a cooling tip that helps protect the skin’s surface while the heat penetrates deeper tissues. The combination of controlled heating and cooling ensures comfort and safety throughout the treatment. Patients typically experience a sensation of warmth during the procedure, which some describe as similar to a hot stone massage. The entire process is quick, efficient, and can be completed in a single session, making Thermage® a convenient option for those with busy schedules.

Procedure Duration

Thermage® treatment durations vary depending on the area being treated and the specific goals of the patient. Generally, the procedure lasts between 30 minutes to 2 hours. For example, a small area like the eyes or forehead might take only 30-45 minutes, while larger areas, such as the abdomen or thighs, may require a full two hours. Prior to treatment, a consultation is conducted to assess the patient’s skin condition, discuss expectations, and determine the precise duration.

The actual procedure follows a multi-step process that begins with cleansing the skin to remove any oils or impurities. A temporary grid is applied to the skin, marking the target areas to ensure even coverage. The Thermage® device is then used to deliver controlled RF energy to the marked areas. The practitioner uses circular or linear motions to ensure thorough treatment across the skin’s surface.

One of the significant advantages of Thermage® is its minimal downtime. Patients can typically return to their normal activities immediately after the procedure, with no need for an extended recovery period. Some patients may experience mild redness or swelling immediately post-treatment, but these effects generally subside within a few hours. Full results from the treatment become visible gradually, often reaching their peak 2 to 6 months after the procedure, as collagen production increases and the skin tightens naturally over time.

  • Potential for skin sensitivity: Following the treatment, patients might notice heightened sensitivity in the treated area, which usually resolves within a few days.
  • Possible uneven results: In rare cases, uneven skin tightening may occur if the RF energy is not applied evenly across the area.
  • Results vary by individual: While Thermage® is effective, individual results can vary based on skin type, age, and lifestyle factors.
  • Not a substitute for surgery: Thermage® is designed for mild to moderate skin laxity; patients with more significant sagging may not achieve the desired results and could require alternative treatments.

Frequently Asked Questions

What actually happens during hyperstimulation of the ovaries?

The patient will take injectable FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) for eight to eleven days, depending on how long the follicles take to mature. This hormone is produced naturally in a woman’s body causing one egg to develop per cycle. Taking the injectable FSH causes several follicles to develop at once, at approximately the same rate. The development is monitored with vaginal ultrasounds and following the patient’s levels of estradiol and progesterone. FSH brand names include Repronex, Follistim, Menopur, Gonal-F and Bravelle. The patient injects herself daily.

What happens during egg retrieval?

When the follicles have developed enough to be harvested, the patient attends an appointment  where she is anesthetized and prepared for the procedure. Next, the doctor uses an ultrasound probe to guide a needle through the vaginal wall and into the follicle of the ovary. The thin needle draws the follicle fluid, which is then examined by an embryologist to find the eggs. The whole process takes about 20 minutes.

What happens to the eggs?

In the next step, the harvested eggs are then fertilized. If the sperm from the potential father, or in some cases, anonymous donor, has normal functionality, the eggs and sperm are placed together in a dish with a nutrient fluid, then incubated overnight to fertilize normally. If the sperm functionality is suboptimal, an embryologist uses Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection to inject a single sperm into a single egg with an extremely precise glass needle.  Once fertilization is complete, the embryos are assessed and prepared to be transferred to the patient’s uterus.

How are the embryos transferred back to the uterus?

The doctor and the patient will discuss the number of embryos to be transferred. The number of successfully fertilized eggs usually determines the number of eggs to be placed in the uterus. Embryos are transferred to the uterus with transabdominal ultrasound guidance. This process does not require anesthesia, but it can cause minor cervical or uterine discomfort. Following transfer, the patient is advised to take at least one days bed rest and two or three additional days of rest, then 10 to 12 days later, two pregnancy tests are scheduled to confirm success. Once two positive tests are completed, an obstetrical ultrasound is ordered to show the sac, fetal pole, yolk sac and fetal heart rate.

Embryoscope©

Built into this technology there is a microscope with a powerful camera that allows the uninterrupted monitoring of the embryo during its first hours of life. In this way, we can keep a close eye on the embryo, from the moment when the oocyte is inseminated and begins to divide into smaller and smaller cells, until it can be transferred to the uterus.
