Septoplasty or Submucous Resection
Steps Involved in IVF:
Procedure Description
Septoplasty, also known as submucous resection, is a surgical procedure designed to correct a deviated nasal septum. The nasal septum is the wall of cartilage and bone that divides the nostrils, allowing for the even distribution of airflow through the nose. When the septum deviates or shifts to one side, it can obstruct airflow, causing breathing difficulties, frequent nasal congestion, sinus infections, and even snoring. In severe cases, it can impact quality of life and require surgical intervention to restore normal nasal function.
The septoplasty procedure aims to straighten and reposition the nasal septum by removing or reshaping parts of cartilage and bone. The surgery is performed entirely within the nasal passages, meaning no visible external incisions or scars. The surgeon first makes an incision within the nasal cavity to access the septum and then carefully removes any obstructive portions of cartilage or bone. This correction allows for improved airflow, reducing symptoms related to a deviated septum.
Septoplasty is often performed as an outpatient procedure, allowing patients to return home the same day. The surgery typically requires local or general anesthesia, depending on the severity of the septum deviation and the patient’s health profile. When completed successfully, septoplasty can result in a significant improvement in breathing, reduced nasal congestion, and relief from sinus-related discomfort.
Procedure Duration
The duration of septoplasty or submucous resection varies based on the complexity of the deviation and the patient’s overall health. On average, the procedure itself takes approximately 30 to 90 minutes. Patients undergoing a simple, straightforward septoplasty may complete the surgery in under an hour, whereas complex cases may require a longer operating time.
The recovery timeline also varies. After the procedure, patients typically spend a few hours in a recovery area while medical staff monitor their vitals. Most patients can leave the hospital on the same day, though those with underlying health concerns may need an overnight stay for observation. In the days immediately following surgery, it’s common to experience swelling, mild pain, and some nasal congestion as the nose begins to heal. The use of nasal packing or splints is sometimes required to help maintain septum alignment and control bleeding.
Full recovery from septoplasty usually takes about 4 to 6 weeks. Most people return to their normal activities within one week, though strenuous activities should be avoided for at least two weeks to minimize the risk of bleeding. By six weeks, most patients achieve optimal healing and can experience the full benefits of improved nasal airflow and reduced congestion.
Benefits
- Improved Breathing: Restores proper airflow, reducing breathing difficulties and enhancing oxygen intake.
- Reduced Sinus Infections: Helps prevent recurrent sinus infections caused by poor drainage.
- Decreased Nasal Congestion: Relieves chronic congestion and associated discomfort.
- Enhanced Quality of Sleep: Often reduces snoring and sleep disturbances due to nasal obstruction.
- No Visible Scarring: The entire procedure is internal, so there are no external scars.

Risks & Considerations
- Bleeding: As with any surgery, septoplasty carries a risk of bleeding, especially during the first few days after the procedure. Patients are advised to avoid heavy lifting and bending to minimize this risk.
- Infection: Although rare, infections can occur post-surgery. It’s important to follow the surgeon’s aftercare instructions and take prescribed antibiotics to reduce this risk.
- Septal Perforation: In some cases, a hole may develop in the septum during or after surgery, which can cause complications like crusting or breathing noise. This complication may require further treatment.
- Altered Sense of Smell: Temporary or, in rare cases, permanent changes to the sense of smell can occur after septoplasty. This risk should be discussed with the surgeon.
- Inadequate Symptom Relief: While most patients experience improved breathing, a small percentage may not achieve the desired results, and additional treatment may be necessary.
How to Choose the Right Doctor and Hospital
Selecting a qualified doctor and hospital for septoplasty is essential for achieving optimal results and ensuring patient safety. Look for an ENT specialist or a plastic surgeon with substantial experience in nasal surgeries. Checking credentials, years of practice, and patient reviews can provide insights into their expertise. Additionally, it’s essential to inquire about the surgeon’s experience with deviated septum correction specifically, as this will help ensure they have the necessary skills for your procedure.
The hospital or clinic should be equipped with modern facilities and adhere to international safety standards. A reputable hospital will prioritize patient care and have well-trained support staff who can assist with post-operative care and recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions
What actually happens during hyperstimulation of the ovaries?
The patient will take injectable FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) for eight to eleven days, depending on how long the follicles take to mature. This hormone is produced naturally in a woman’s body causing one egg to develop per cycle. Taking the injectable FSH causes several follicles to develop at once, at approximately the same rate. The development is monitored with vaginal ultrasounds and following the patient’s levels of estradiol and progesterone. FSH brand names include Repronex, Follistim, Menopur, Gonal-F and Bravelle. The patient injects herself daily.
What happens during egg retrieval?
When the follicles have developed enough to be harvested, the patient attends an appointment where she is anesthetized and prepared for the procedure. Next, the doctor uses an ultrasound probe to guide a needle through the vaginal wall and into the follicle of the ovary. The thin needle draws the follicle fluid, which is then examined by an embryologist to find the eggs. The whole process takes about 20 minutes.
What happens to the eggs?
In the next step, the harvested eggs are then fertilized. If the sperm from the potential father, or in some cases, anonymous donor, has normal functionality, the eggs and sperm are placed together in a dish with a nutrient fluid, then incubated overnight to fertilize normally. If the sperm functionality is suboptimal, an embryologist uses Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection to inject a single sperm into a single egg with an extremely precise glass needle. Once fertilization is complete, the embryos are assessed and prepared to be transferred to the patient’s uterus.
How are the embryos transferred back to the uterus?
The doctor and the patient will discuss the number of embryos to be transferred. The number of successfully fertilized eggs usually determines the number of eggs to be placed in the uterus. Embryos are transferred to the uterus with transabdominal ultrasound guidance. This process does not require anesthesia, but it can cause minor cervical or uterine discomfort. Following transfer, the patient is advised to take at least one days bed rest and two or three additional days of rest, then 10 to 12 days later, two pregnancy tests are scheduled to confirm success. Once two positive tests are completed, an obstetrical ultrasound is ordered to show the sac, fetal pole, yolk sac and fetal heart rate.
Embryoscope©
Built into this technology there is a microscope with a powerful camera that allows the uninterrupted monitoring of the embryo during its first hours of life. In this way, we can keep a close eye on the embryo, from the moment when the oocyte is inseminated and begins to divide into smaller and smaller cells, until it can be transferred to the uterus.
