Overdenture - Partial

Steps Involved in IVF:

Procedure Description

A partial overdenture is a dental prosthesis designed for individuals who have lost several but not all of their teeth. This type of denture is often supported by existing natural teeth or dental implants, which helps stabilize the prosthetic and improve its function. Partial overdentures can enhance a patient’s oral health by distributing chewing forces more evenly across the mouth, reducing the pressure placed on any remaining natural teeth.

Unlike traditional partial dentures that rely solely on remaining teeth for support, overdentures are designed to fit over either dental implants or prepared natural teeth. These underlying supports act as anchor points, providing a more secure fit and reducing the risk of the denture shifting or causing discomfort during daily activities such as eating or speaking.

Patients often choose partial overdentures due to their aesthetic and functional benefits. The denture can be customized to blend with the patient’s existing teeth, ensuring a natural look while improving chewing efficiency. By restoring a full dental arch, partial overdentures also help to maintain the structure of the face, preventing sagging that can occur with tooth loss.

Procedure Duration

The process of getting partial overdentures typically occurs in several stages and can take a few weeks to several months depending on the case's complexity and whether implants are required. The initial step involves a thorough evaluation by a dentist or prosthodontist, who will assess the patient's oral health, take measurements, and decide whether any preparatory procedures are needed. If dental implants are part of the treatment, the timeline may extend since the gums and bone need time to heal after implant placement.

  • Consultation and Planning: During the first appointment, detailed scans and impressions of the teeth and gums are taken to create a custom-fit prosthesis. If natural teeth are present, they may be modified (e.g., by adding attachments or crowns) to support the overdenture.
  • Implant Placement (if applicable): For patients requiring dental implants, this phase involves the surgical insertion of implants into the jawbone. Healing can take anywhere from 3 to 6 months as the implants fuse with the bone (osseointegration).
  • Denture Fabrication and Fitting: Once healing is complete, or if natural teeth are used, the overdenture is fabricated based on the initial impressions and fitted over the implants or teeth. Adjustments are made to ensure comfort and functionality.

The overall treatment time can vary, but a patient should plan for several months from the initial consultation to the final fitting, particularly if implants are involved.

Benefits

  • Improved Stability and Comfort: Partial overdentures are more stable than traditional partial dentures, reducing movement during eating or speaking.
  • Enhanced Chewing Efficiency: The added support from natural teeth or implants helps distribute chewing forces more evenly, enabling better food breakdown.
  • Preservation of Oral Health: By protecting remaining natural teeth or distributing forces across implants, overdentures help maintain the health of the gums and jawbone.
  • Aesthetic Benefits: Overdentures are designed to look natural and maintain the facial structure, preventing the "sunken face" appearance that can result from tooth loss.
  • Longer Lifespan: Due to their added stability and support, overdentures often have a longer lifespan compared to traditional dentures, reducing the need for frequent replacements or repairs.

Risks & Considerations

  • Gum Irritation: Overdentures may cause irritation to the gums, particularly in the initial adjustment period. Regular check-ups are essential to address any discomfort and ensure proper fit.
  • Bone Resorption: If overdentures are supported solely by remaining natural teeth and not implants, there is a risk of gradual bone resorption over time, which could compromise the fit and functionality of the denture.
  • Implant Complications: For patients with implant-supported overdentures, there is a risk of implant failure or infection if proper oral hygiene is not maintained. Regular dental care and cleanings are vital to prevent complications.
  • Denture Wear and Tear: While more durable than traditional dentures, overdentures are still subject to wear and tear over time. They may require adjustments, repairs, or replacements every few years.
  • Speech Impairment: Adjusting to the feel of partial overdentures may temporarily affect speech patterns. Patients may experience minor difficulties pronouncing certain sounds as they acclimate to the new prosthesis.

How to Choose the Right Doctor and Hospital

When selecting a doctor or hospital for partial overdentures, it is crucial to prioritize expertise and quality over cost. Start by researching dental specialists with extensive experience in prosthetic dentistry and, if necessary, implantology. Check for qualifications, such as board certification or advanced training in dental prosthetics, and ensure that the practitioner has a proven track record of successful overdenture cases.

The hospital or clinic chosen should be equipped with the latest dental technology to ensure accurate diagnosis and treatment. It's also essential to review patient testimonials, treatment success rates, and any available before-and-after photos of previous patients. Make sure that the facility follows strict hygiene and safety protocols to reduce the risk of infections or complications.

Frequently Asked Questions

What actually happens during hyperstimulation of the ovaries?

The patient will take injectable FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) for eight to eleven days, depending on how long the follicles take to mature. This hormone is produced naturally in a woman’s body causing one egg to develop per cycle. Taking the injectable FSH causes several follicles to develop at once, at approximately the same rate. The development is monitored with vaginal ultrasounds and following the patient’s levels of estradiol and progesterone. FSH brand names include Repronex, Follistim, Menopur, Gonal-F and Bravelle. The patient injects herself daily.

What happens during egg retrieval?

When the follicles have developed enough to be harvested, the patient attends an appointment  where she is anesthetized and prepared for the procedure. Next, the doctor uses an ultrasound probe to guide a needle through the vaginal wall and into the follicle of the ovary. The thin needle draws the follicle fluid, which is then examined by an embryologist to find the eggs. The whole process takes about 20 minutes.

What happens to the eggs?

In the next step, the harvested eggs are then fertilized. If the sperm from the potential father, or in some cases, anonymous donor, has normal functionality, the eggs and sperm are placed together in a dish with a nutrient fluid, then incubated overnight to fertilize normally. If the sperm functionality is suboptimal, an embryologist uses Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection to inject a single sperm into a single egg with an extremely precise glass needle.  Once fertilization is complete, the embryos are assessed and prepared to be transferred to the patient’s uterus.

How are the embryos transferred back to the uterus?

The doctor and the patient will discuss the number of embryos to be transferred. The number of successfully fertilized eggs usually determines the number of eggs to be placed in the uterus. Embryos are transferred to the uterus with transabdominal ultrasound guidance. This process does not require anesthesia, but it can cause minor cervical or uterine discomfort. Following transfer, the patient is advised to take at least one days bed rest and two or three additional days of rest, then 10 to 12 days later, two pregnancy tests are scheduled to confirm success. Once two positive tests are completed, an obstetrical ultrasound is ordered to show the sac, fetal pole, yolk sac and fetal heart rate.

Embryoscope©

Built into this technology there is a microscope with a powerful camera that allows the uninterrupted monitoring of the embryo during its first hours of life. In this way, we can keep a close eye on the embryo, from the moment when the oocyte is inseminated and begins to divide into smaller and smaller cells, until it can be transferred to the uterus.
