Orofacial Massage Treatments

Steps Involved in IVF:

Procedure Description

Orofacial massage is a specialized therapy focusing on the muscles of the face, jaw, neck, and head. Aimed at alleviating tension, improving mobility, and reducing chronic pain, this treatment uses a combination of intraoral and external massage techniques. Orofacial massage practitioners are trained to work with the intricate muscles and connective tissues in the head and neck region, enhancing circulation, and promoting relaxation and proper muscle function.

The procedure often addresses issues such as temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, jaw pain, teeth grinding (bruxism), headaches, and facial nerve tension. By working on both the internal and external muscles, the therapist is able to release tightness in deeper layers of the musculature that traditional facial massages cannot reach. This comprehensive approach can also improve posture, alleviate tension in the shoulders and neck, and improve the overall function of facial muscles.

During the treatment, a practitioner uses gentle, sustained pressure, along with various myofascial techniques, to alleviate pain, relieve tension, and encourage muscle relaxation. The therapy is suitable for individuals who have been diagnosed with TMJ disorders, suffer from facial pain or muscular tightness, or are recovering from dental or facial surgeries. Moreover, it can also be beneficial for those seeking to improve facial aesthetics, as it promotes muscle tone, reduces puffiness, and encourages lymphatic drainage.

Procedure Duration

The duration of an orofacial massage session varies depending on the individual’s needs and the condition being addressed. Generally, a session lasts anywhere between 30 minutes to an hour. The first session often involves an initial consultation, where the practitioner assesses the patient’s facial structure, muscular condition, and specific symptoms or discomforts. This step is crucial for tailoring the treatment to target the appropriate muscle groups and pressure points.

Once the assessment is complete, the practitioner uses their hands, fingers, and sometimes tools to gently manipulate the muscles of the face, jaw, neck, and head. The intraoral component of the treatment (massage inside the mouth) requires gloved hands and focuses on muscles that directly impact the jaw's function and mobility. Patients may feel initial discomfort or tenderness as tension is released, but the process is generally well-tolerated and effective in providing relief.

Recovery time post-treatment is minimal to non-existent. Patients typically feel immediate relaxation and relief after a session, although slight soreness can occur. For chronic issues, multiple sessions over a few weeks may be recommended to achieve optimal results. The frequency of sessions often depends on the severity of the symptoms and how quickly the patient responds to the treatment.

Benefits

  • Relief from TMJ Pain: Orofacial massage is highly effective in reducing pain and discomfort caused by TMJ disorders, jaw tension, and facial muscular tightness.
  • Reduced Headaches & Migraines: Regular treatments can alleviate tension headaches and migraines by addressing underlying muscle imbalances and improving circulation in the head and neck area.
  • Improved Facial Mobility & Function: The massage enhances the flexibility of facial muscles and joints, supporting better function for activities like speaking, chewing, and facial expressions.
  • Enhanced Lymphatic Drainage & Circulation: Promotes better lymphatic drainage, which helps to reduce facial puffiness, improve skin health, and enhance circulation in the treated areas.
  • Promotes Relaxation & Stress Relief: By working on the muscles of the head, neck, and jaw, orofacial massage offers a deeply relaxing experience that can reduce stress and improve sleep quality.

Risks & Considerations

  • Mild Soreness & Discomfort: It is common to experience some tenderness after the treatment, especially if deep tissue work is involved. This is generally temporary and subsides within a day or two.
  • Possible Bruising: While uncommon, some individuals may bruise due to the pressure applied during the massage. Practitioners typically adjust their techniques to the patient's comfort level to minimize this risk.
  • Infection Risk (Intraoral Massage): Since the procedure involves intraoral massage, there is a minor risk of introducing bacteria into the mouth if proper hygiene protocols are not followed. Using gloves and ensuring a sterile environment is crucial.
  • Contraindications for Certain Conditions: Those with facial injuries, open sores, recent surgeries, or severe TMJ dislocations should avoid orofacial massage until fully healed or cleared by a healthcare professional.
  • Effectiveness Varies by Individual: The outcome of orofacial massage may vary based on the underlying cause of the discomfort and the individual’s responsiveness to manual therapy.

How to Choose the Right Doctor and Hospital

When selecting a practitioner and facility for orofacial massage treatments, it's important to seek out professionals who are trained and experienced in this specific form of therapy. Ensure that the practitioner has certification in orofacial massage, myofascial techniques, or related therapies, as this specialization is key to effective treatment. Checking their years of experience and patient testimonials can also provide insight into their expertise and success rates.

Equally important is the choice of a clinic or hospital that maintains high hygiene standards, particularly for the intraoral component of the treatment. Medical tourists should consider facilities that are accredited by international healthcare organizations, have modern equipment, and offer a welcoming environment. Before committing to any treatment, it's advisable to have a detailed consultation to assess the clinic's approach, treatment protocol, and the practitioner's knowledge and experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

What actually happens during hyperstimulation of the ovaries?

The patient will take injectable FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) for eight to eleven days, depending on how long the follicles take to mature. This hormone is produced naturally in a woman’s body causing one egg to develop per cycle. Taking the injectable FSH causes several follicles to develop at once, at approximately the same rate. The development is monitored with vaginal ultrasounds and following the patient’s levels of estradiol and progesterone. FSH brand names include Repronex, Follistim, Menopur, Gonal-F and Bravelle. The patient injects herself daily.

What happens during egg retrieval?

When the follicles have developed enough to be harvested, the patient attends an appointment  where she is anesthetized and prepared for the procedure. Next, the doctor uses an ultrasound probe to guide a needle through the vaginal wall and into the follicle of the ovary. The thin needle draws the follicle fluid, which is then examined by an embryologist to find the eggs. The whole process takes about 20 minutes.

What happens to the eggs?

In the next step, the harvested eggs are then fertilized. If the sperm from the potential father, or in some cases, anonymous donor, has normal functionality, the eggs and sperm are placed together in a dish with a nutrient fluid, then incubated overnight to fertilize normally. If the sperm functionality is suboptimal, an embryologist uses Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection to inject a single sperm into a single egg with an extremely precise glass needle.  Once fertilization is complete, the embryos are assessed and prepared to be transferred to the patient’s uterus.

How are the embryos transferred back to the uterus?

The doctor and the patient will discuss the number of embryos to be transferred. The number of successfully fertilized eggs usually determines the number of eggs to be placed in the uterus. Embryos are transferred to the uterus with transabdominal ultrasound guidance. This process does not require anesthesia, but it can cause minor cervical or uterine discomfort. Following transfer, the patient is advised to take at least one days bed rest and two or three additional days of rest, then 10 to 12 days later, two pregnancy tests are scheduled to confirm success. Once two positive tests are completed, an obstetrical ultrasound is ordered to show the sac, fetal pole, yolk sac and fetal heart rate.

Embryoscope©

Built into this technology there is a microscope with a powerful camera that allows the uninterrupted monitoring of the embryo during its first hours of life. In this way, we can keep a close eye on the embryo, from the moment when the oocyte is inseminated and begins to divide into smaller and smaller cells, until it can be transferred to the uterus.
