Onlay - Porcelain/Ceramic, Two Surfaces
Steps Involved in IVF:
Procedure Description
Porcelain or ceramic onlays, often referred to as indirect fillings, are dental restorations used to repair damaged or decayed teeth. Unlike traditional fillings, which are applied directly to the cavity and molded within the tooth, onlays are crafted outside the mouth using durable materials like porcelain or ceramic and then bonded to the tooth. They are a more conservative alternative to crowns, preserving more of the natural tooth structure while providing a strong and aesthetically pleasing solution.
In cases where a tooth is too damaged for a traditional filling but not enough to require a crown, a porcelain or ceramic onlay is ideal. Onlays can cover two surfaces of the tooth, which means they are especially useful when decay or damage extends across multiple surfaces but still allows for the preservation of a substantial portion of the tooth. These restorations are custom-made to fit perfectly into the prepared cavity, ensuring a precise fit that supports the remaining tooth structure.
The procedure typically involves removing the decayed or damaged portion of the tooth, taking impressions for the onlay to be custom-made in a dental laboratory, and then permanently bonding the onlay to the tooth. This method not only restores the tooth's function but also provides a long-lasting, durable solution that closely mimics the appearance of natural teeth. The use of porcelain or ceramic ensures that the onlay blends seamlessly with the surrounding teeth, making it a popular choice for patients who want a natural-looking result.
Procedure Duration
The process of getting a porcelain or ceramic onlay typically takes two visits to the dentist, although the total duration will depend on the complexity of the case. During the first visit, the dentist will prepare the tooth by removing any decay or old fillings. This step is crucial for creating a clean surface to which the onlay can bond. Afterward, an impression of the tooth is taken, which is then sent to a dental lab where the custom onlay will be crafted. This process usually takes one to two weeks, during which time a temporary filling may be placed to protect the tooth.
The second visit involves the placement of the onlay. Once the onlay has been fabricated, the dentist will remove the temporary filling and check the fit of the new onlay. Adjustments may be made to ensure that the onlay fits perfectly and that the patient's bite is correct. After confirming the fit, the dentist will bond the onlay to the tooth using a special adhesive. This process is meticulous to ensure a strong bond and a perfect seal, which is critical to the onlay's longevity.
Recovery after an onlay placement is usually quick, with most patients experiencing little to no discomfort. Any minor soreness or sensitivity should resolve within a few days. Unlike other dental procedures that require longer recovery times, patients can typically resume normal eating and drinking habits soon after the onlay is placed, though care should be taken to avoid chewing on hard objects until the bonding material fully sets.
Benefits
- Tooth Preservation: Onlays preserve more of the natural tooth structure compared to crowns.
- Durability: Porcelain and ceramic onlays are highly durable, lasting for many years with proper care.
- Aesthetic Appeal: These materials closely match the natural color of teeth, providing an aesthetically pleasing result.
- Strength Restoration: Onlays help restore the strength and function of the damaged tooth, making it almost as strong as an unblemished tooth.
- Minimally Invasive: The procedure is less invasive than a full crown placement, reducing the amount of tooth material that needs to be removed.

Risks & Considerations
- Tooth Sensitivity: Some patients may experience temporary sensitivity to hot or cold after the procedure, which usually resolves within a few days.
- Allergic Reactions: Although rare, some patients may have allergic reactions to the bonding materials used in the onlay procedure.
- Fit and Bite Issues: If the onlay is not perfectly fitted, it may cause bite issues or discomfort. Adjustments may be necessary to ensure proper alignment.
- Chipping or Cracking: While porcelain and ceramic onlays are durable, they are not immune to damage. Chewing on hard objects or grinding teeth can cause the onlay to crack or chip.
- Replacement: Over time, the onlay may need to be replaced due to wear, although they generally last 10-15 years or longer with proper care.
How to Choose the Right Doctor and Hospital
When selecting a dentist for your porcelain onlay procedure, it’s important to ensure that the practitioner has specialized experience in cosmetic and restorative dentistry. Look for a dentist with credentials from reputable dental institutions and a track record of successful onlay placements. Reviews from other patients and before-and-after photos of past work can also provide insight into the quality of care provided.
Equally important is choosing a hospital or clinic that is equipped with modern dental technologies and adheres to international hygiene and safety standards. Facilities that offer comprehensive aftercare services can help ensure a smooth recovery and optimal results. Make sure to inquire about the lab where the onlay will be fabricated, as the quality of materials used will directly impact the durability and appearance of the onlay.

Frequently Asked Questions
What actually happens during hyperstimulation of the ovaries?
The patient will take injectable FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) for eight to eleven days, depending on how long the follicles take to mature. This hormone is produced naturally in a woman’s body causing one egg to develop per cycle. Taking the injectable FSH causes several follicles to develop at once, at approximately the same rate. The development is monitored with vaginal ultrasounds and following the patient’s levels of estradiol and progesterone. FSH brand names include Repronex, Follistim, Menopur, Gonal-F and Bravelle. The patient injects herself daily.
What happens during egg retrieval?
When the follicles have developed enough to be harvested, the patient attends an appointment where she is anesthetized and prepared for the procedure. Next, the doctor uses an ultrasound probe to guide a needle through the vaginal wall and into the follicle of the ovary. The thin needle draws the follicle fluid, which is then examined by an embryologist to find the eggs. The whole process takes about 20 minutes.
What happens to the eggs?
In the next step, the harvested eggs are then fertilized. If the sperm from the potential father, or in some cases, anonymous donor, has normal functionality, the eggs and sperm are placed together in a dish with a nutrient fluid, then incubated overnight to fertilize normally. If the sperm functionality is suboptimal, an embryologist uses Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection to inject a single sperm into a single egg with an extremely precise glass needle. Once fertilization is complete, the embryos are assessed and prepared to be transferred to the patient’s uterus.
How are the embryos transferred back to the uterus?
The doctor and the patient will discuss the number of embryos to be transferred. The number of successfully fertilized eggs usually determines the number of eggs to be placed in the uterus. Embryos are transferred to the uterus with transabdominal ultrasound guidance. This process does not require anesthesia, but it can cause minor cervical or uterine discomfort. Following transfer, the patient is advised to take at least one days bed rest and two or three additional days of rest, then 10 to 12 days later, two pregnancy tests are scheduled to confirm success. Once two positive tests are completed, an obstetrical ultrasound is ordered to show the sac, fetal pole, yolk sac and fetal heart rate.
Embryoscope©
Built into this technology there is a microscope with a powerful camera that allows the uninterrupted monitoring of the embryo during its first hours of life. In this way, we can keep a close eye on the embryo, from the moment when the oocyte is inseminated and begins to divide into smaller and smaller cells, until it can be transferred to the uterus.
