Non-Surgical Weight Loss Treatment

Steps Involved in IVF:

Procedure Description

Non-surgical weight loss treatments are increasingly popular alternatives to invasive procedures like bariatric surgery, providing effective weight management solutions without incisions or anesthesia. These non-surgical options utilize various methods to promote weight loss, often combining dietary changes, lifestyle adjustments, and medical devices or medications. For individuals looking for safer and less invasive options, these procedures offer significant health benefits with shorter recovery times, making them ideal for medical tourists who seek weight loss solutions with minimal downtime.

One of the most popular non-surgical weight loss options is the use of intragastric balloons. In this procedure, a deflated balloon is inserted through the mouth and inflated in the stomach, limiting the amount of food the patient can consume. This minimally invasive technique helps in reducing hunger and promoting fullness, assisting patients in managing their weight through dietary adjustments. Another method is endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG), a procedure in which a suturing device is used to reduce the stomach’s size endoscopically, thus limiting food intake without removing any stomach tissue. Both methods are reversible, adding to their appeal among patients who may be hesitant about permanent alterations.

Another effective approach includes medically supervised weight-loss programs involving pharmacotherapy. These programs use FDA-approved weight-loss medications tailored to individual patient profiles, helping to regulate appetite and increase metabolism. These programs often incorporate behavioral therapy and regular monitoring by healthcare professionals, ensuring that patients receive support to achieve long-term results. All of these non-surgical approaches are designed to provide patients with weight loss benefits while minimizing the risks associated with traditional surgery.

Procedure Duration

The duration of non-surgical weight loss procedures can vary depending on the chosen method, patient health, and individual response. Intragastric balloon placement, for example, is typically completed in about 30 minutes to an hour. Patients are usually monitored briefly post-procedure to ensure there are no complications before they can return to regular activities. The balloon remains in the stomach for about six months, after which it must be removed or replaced to avoid any potential complications. Recovery is quick, with most patients resuming daily routines within a day or two after placement.

Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty is slightly more complex and may take around one to two hours to complete. Patients may experience some discomfort immediately following the procedure, but recovery is generally swift, and most individuals return to their regular activities within a week. Over time, the reduced stomach volume promotes consistent weight loss, making ESG a long-term solution for those committed to dietary and lifestyle changes.

Pharmacotherapy programs are usually ongoing, with patients taking prescribed medications as directed by their healthcare provider. These programs require regular follow-up appointments to monitor progress, adjust dosages, and address any side effects. With the support of a healthcare team, patients can continue their normal activities throughout the treatment duration, adjusting their lifestyle as necessary to optimize results.

Benefits

  • Minimally Invasive: Non-surgical weight loss treatments typically do not involve incisions or extensive recovery time, making them a safer alternative to surgery.
  • Quicker Recovery: Most procedures, such as intragastric balloons or pharmacotherapy, allow patients to return to daily activities within a few days.
  • Reversible Options: Many non-surgical treatments, including the intragastric balloon, are temporary and reversible, allowing for adjustments if needed.
  • Effective Weight Management: Patients often achieve significant weight loss with non-surgical options, especially when combined with lifestyle modifications and dietary support.
  • Lower Risk of Complications: Without the need for general anesthesia or invasive techniques, the risk of complications is generally lower than with surgical weight loss options.

Risks & Considerations

  • Potential Side Effects: Patients may experience nausea, vomiting, or acid reflux with treatments like intragastrical balloons, especially in the initial days following the procedure.
  • Limited Duration of Effects: Some treatments, such as intragastric balloons, are temporary and must be removed after six months. Patients need to commit to lifestyle changes to maintain results post-removal.
  • Risk of Device Complications: Although rare, devices like intragastrical balloons can leak, rupture, or move within the stomach, requiring immediate medical attention.
  • Medication Side Effects: Pharmacotherapy programs may cause side effects such as dry mouth, constipation, or increased heart rate. Regular medical supervision is essential to mitigate these effects.
  • Adherence to Long-Term Lifestyle Changes: Non-surgical treatments require a commitment to dietary and behavioral changes, as these are crucial for sustainable results. Patients should be prepared for long-term follow-up care and support.

How to Choose the Right Doctor and Hospital

Selecting a qualified doctor and hospital is essential to ensure safety and success in non-surgical weight loss treatments. Patients should look for professionals with specialized training in non-invasive weight management and a solid track record in similar procedures. Researching a doctor’s certifications, years of experience, and patient testimonials can provide insight into their expertise and patient care quality.

Additionally, the hospital’s accreditation, reputation for patient care, and state-of-the-art facilities are critical factors to consider. Opting for a hospital with a strong support system for international patients—such as language support and travel assistance—can enhance the overall experience and provide peace of mind during treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What actually happens during hyperstimulation of the ovaries?

The patient will take injectable FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) for eight to eleven days, depending on how long the follicles take to mature. This hormone is produced naturally in a woman’s body causing one egg to develop per cycle. Taking the injectable FSH causes several follicles to develop at once, at approximately the same rate. The development is monitored with vaginal ultrasounds and following the patient’s levels of estradiol and progesterone. FSH brand names include Repronex, Follistim, Menopur, Gonal-F and Bravelle. The patient injects herself daily.

What happens during egg retrieval?

When the follicles have developed enough to be harvested, the patient attends an appointment  where she is anesthetized and prepared for the procedure. Next, the doctor uses an ultrasound probe to guide a needle through the vaginal wall and into the follicle of the ovary. The thin needle draws the follicle fluid, which is then examined by an embryologist to find the eggs. The whole process takes about 20 minutes.

What happens to the eggs?

In the next step, the harvested eggs are then fertilized. If the sperm from the potential father, or in some cases, anonymous donor, has normal functionality, the eggs and sperm are placed together in a dish with a nutrient fluid, then incubated overnight to fertilize normally. If the sperm functionality is suboptimal, an embryologist uses Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection to inject a single sperm into a single egg with an extremely precise glass needle.  Once fertilization is complete, the embryos are assessed and prepared to be transferred to the patient’s uterus.

How are the embryos transferred back to the uterus?

The doctor and the patient will discuss the number of embryos to be transferred. The number of successfully fertilized eggs usually determines the number of eggs to be placed in the uterus. Embryos are transferred to the uterus with transabdominal ultrasound guidance. This process does not require anesthesia, but it can cause minor cervical or uterine discomfort. Following transfer, the patient is advised to take at least one days bed rest and two or three additional days of rest, then 10 to 12 days later, two pregnancy tests are scheduled to confirm success. Once two positive tests are completed, an obstetrical ultrasound is ordered to show the sac, fetal pole, yolk sac and fetal heart rate.

Embryoscope©

Built into this technology there is a microscope with a powerful camera that allows the uninterrupted monitoring of the embryo during its first hours of life. In this way, we can keep a close eye on the embryo, from the moment when the oocyte is inseminated and begins to divide into smaller and smaller cells, until it can be transferred to the uterus.
