Mentoplasty
Steps Involved in IVF:
Procedure Description
Mentoplasty, or chin surgery, is a cosmetic procedure designed to enhance the appearance of the chin, often to balance facial proportions or improve overall facial symmetry. This procedure can be either reconstructive, aimed at correcting congenital abnormalities or injuries, or aesthetic, focused on refining the chin’s appearance. Commonly, mentoplasty involves either chin augmentation, which uses implants to add definition and projection, or chin reduction, which reshapes the chin bone to achieve a more subtle profile. Both types of mentoplasty are highly specialized, requiring precise surgical techniques to create a natural-looking outcome.
In chin augmentation, surgeons typically use biocompatible implants made from materials such as silicone or Medpor. These implants are carefully inserted through a small incision, often made inside the mouth or under the chin, making the resulting scars nearly invisible. The implants are securely positioned to enhance the chin’s shape and volume, lending structure and balance to the lower face.
For chin reduction, the procedure entails sculpting the chin bone to achieve a more refined look. Surgeons make incisions either inside the mouth or beneath the chin to access the chin bone, then precisely remove and contour bone segments to achieve the desired shape. While the procedure itself varies in complexity based on individual anatomy and goals, both types of mentoplasty typically last one to two hours. Local or general anesthesia is commonly used, depending on patient and procedural requirements.
Procedure Duration
Mentoplasty is typically a straightforward procedure that takes about one to two hours to complete, though duration may vary based on whether the surgery involves augmentation or reduction. The preparation phase includes preoperative consultations where the surgeon assesses the patient’s facial structure, reviews medical history, and discusses the desired outcome. Imaging and modeling are often employed to visualize post-surgery results, providing patients with a realistic preview of what to expect.
The main surgical phase involves incisions and careful positioning of implants for augmentation or bone reshaping for reduction. Chin augmentation generally involves a quicker procedure, as the surgeon positions the implant and closes the incisions. Chin reduction, however, may take longer due to the need for precise bone sculpting and reshaping. This part of the procedure demands specialized skills to ensure symmetry and natural aesthetics.
After the procedure, patients enter the recovery phase, which requires careful monitoring for a few hours post-surgery, especially if general anesthesia was used. Most patients can return home on the same day, although they need to follow specific post-operative care instructions. Recovery time varies; mild swelling and discomfort typically last one to two weeks, with full results visible within three months. Patients are usually advised to avoid strenuous activities and excessive facial movement during the initial recovery period.
Benefits
- Enhanced Facial Symmetry: Mentoplasty helps balance facial features, often making the jawline appear more defined and proportionate to other facial elements.
- Improved Confidence: For many, mentoplasty can boost self-confidence by providing a more attractive facial profile.
- Minimal Scarring: With incisions inside the mouth or under the chin, mentoplasty typically results in minimal visible scarring, making it an appealing choice for cosmetic enhancement.
- Customized Results: Surgeons can tailor the procedure to each patient’s unique needs, whether augmenting or reducing the chin’s appearance.
- Permanent Results: Unlike non-surgical treatments, mentoplasty provides lasting results, making it a popular choice for those seeking long-term facial enhancement.

Risks & Considerations
- Infection Risk: As with any surgery, mentoplasty carries a risk of infection, especially when proper post-operative care is not followed. Ensuring a sterile surgical environment and adhering to post-op care can minimize this risk.
- Implant Shifting (in Augmentation): Chin implants may occasionally shift from their original position, leading to asymmetry or discomfort. Choosing an experienced surgeon can help reduce the likelihood of implant displacement.
- Nerve Damage: There’s a potential risk of nerve damage, which can result in temporary or, in rare cases, permanent numbness in the lower lip and chin. Surgeons with expertise in facial anatomy can often mitigate this risk.
- Bone Resorption (in Reduction): In some cases of chin reduction, bone resorption or changes in the bone structure over time can affect the final appearance. Discussing these possibilities with the surgeon pre-procedure is crucial.
- Unwanted Aesthetic Outcome: Not all mentoplasty results are predictable. Patients should work closely with their surgeons to set realistic expectations and use imaging tools to preview possible outcomes.
How to Choose the Right Doctor and Hospital
When selecting a doctor and hospital for mentoplasty, it’s essential to focus on the surgeon’s experience in facial cosmetic procedures, specifically chin augmentation or reduction. Look for board-certified plastic surgeons who specialize in facial contouring and have a strong portfolio of successful outcomes. Reviewing before-and-after photos from previous patients can provide insight into the surgeon’s skill level and aesthetic style.
Equally important is the choice of hospital or clinic. Opt for facilities with an accredited operating room and high standards for patient safety and post-operative care. In medical tourism destinations, research hospitals with an international reputation for excellence in cosmetic surgery. Inquire about post-op services, as some hospitals offer in-house recovery facilities that provide patients with personalized care during the initial healing stages. By prioritizing these factors, patients can select a doctor and hospital that align with their needs, ensuring a safe and satisfying mentoplasty experience.

Frequently Asked Questions
What actually happens during hyperstimulation of the ovaries?
The patient will take injectable FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) for eight to eleven days, depending on how long the follicles take to mature. This hormone is produced naturally in a woman’s body causing one egg to develop per cycle. Taking the injectable FSH causes several follicles to develop at once, at approximately the same rate. The development is monitored with vaginal ultrasounds and following the patient’s levels of estradiol and progesterone. FSH brand names include Repronex, Follistim, Menopur, Gonal-F and Bravelle. The patient injects herself daily.
What happens during egg retrieval?
When the follicles have developed enough to be harvested, the patient attends an appointment where she is anesthetized and prepared for the procedure. Next, the doctor uses an ultrasound probe to guide a needle through the vaginal wall and into the follicle of the ovary. The thin needle draws the follicle fluid, which is then examined by an embryologist to find the eggs. The whole process takes about 20 minutes.
What happens to the eggs?
In the next step, the harvested eggs are then fertilized. If the sperm from the potential father, or in some cases, anonymous donor, has normal functionality, the eggs and sperm are placed together in a dish with a nutrient fluid, then incubated overnight to fertilize normally. If the sperm functionality is suboptimal, an embryologist uses Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection to inject a single sperm into a single egg with an extremely precise glass needle. Once fertilization is complete, the embryos are assessed and prepared to be transferred to the patient’s uterus.
How are the embryos transferred back to the uterus?
The doctor and the patient will discuss the number of embryos to be transferred. The number of successfully fertilized eggs usually determines the number of eggs to be placed in the uterus. Embryos are transferred to the uterus with transabdominal ultrasound guidance. This process does not require anesthesia, but it can cause minor cervical or uterine discomfort. Following transfer, the patient is advised to take at least one days bed rest and two or three additional days of rest, then 10 to 12 days later, two pregnancy tests are scheduled to confirm success. Once two positive tests are completed, an obstetrical ultrasound is ordered to show the sac, fetal pole, yolk sac and fetal heart rate.
Embryoscope©
Built into this technology there is a microscope with a powerful camera that allows the uninterrupted monitoring of the embryo during its first hours of life. In this way, we can keep a close eye on the embryo, from the moment when the oocyte is inseminated and begins to divide into smaller and smaller cells, until it can be transferred to the uterus.
