Mastopexy (Breast Lift)

Steps Involved in IVF:

Procedure Description

Mastopexy, commonly known as a breast lift, is a surgical procedure designed to elevate and reshape sagging breasts. Over time, factors such as aging, gravity, weight fluctuations, and pregnancy can cause breast tissue to lose firmness and elasticity. Mastopexy addresses these changes by removing excess skin, tightening the surrounding tissue, and repositioning the nipple to restore a youthful breast contour.

This procedure is highly individualized, as each patient’s body and goals are unique. During a consultation, the surgeon evaluates factors like breast size, skin quality, and desired outcome to create a customized plan. Techniques vary but often involve removing excess skin, adjusting the breast tissue, and positioning the nipple for a natural appearance. Incision patterns may vary depending on the degree of sagging and skin elasticity, with some common approaches being a circular incision around the areola, a vertical line down to the breast crease, or a combination of these patterns.

For individuals looking for a purely cosmetic change, mastopexy does not alter the breast’s size, though it can be combined with breast augmentation or reduction. By enhancing both shape and firmness, a breast lift can give patients renewed confidence and help them feel more comfortable in their appearance.

Procedure Duration

The duration of a mastopexy procedure can vary, but it generally takes between two to three hours to complete. The time required will depend on the complexity of the lift, the degree of sagging, and any additional procedures such as breast augmentation or reduction that are being performed in tandem. The surgeon will often provide a clear breakdown of what to expect during the surgery, including preparation, anesthesia, and the actual reshaping process.

The recovery period after a breast lift is essential to achieving the best results. Patients are typically advised to rest for a few days following surgery and may experience swelling, bruising, and discomfort that subsides over the first week. Most can resume light activities after a week, but strenuous physical activities, especially those that involve the chest muscles, should be avoided for at least six weeks. Supporting the healing process by wearing a surgical bra and following postoperative care instructions is crucial to prevent complications.

The complete healing and final results of the breast lift are usually visible within six months as the tissue settles and scars fade. Each patient’s healing process is unique, but maintaining good communication with the medical provider can ensure a smooth recovery and optimal results.

Risks & Considerations

  • Scarring: Although surgeons strive to minimize visible scarring, some degree of scarring is inevitable. Patients should discuss incision patterns and scar management options with their surgeon.
  • Changes in Sensation: Some patients experience temporary or permanent changes in nipple and breast sensation, particularly if significant adjustments to the nipple area are required.
  • Infection and Bleeding: As with any surgery, there is a risk of infection or excessive bleeding. Following postoperative care instructions and attending follow-up visits can reduce these risks.
  • Asymmetry: Although surgeons work meticulously to achieve balance, slight asymmetry in breast size or shape can occur. In some cases, revision surgery may be required to achieve optimal symmetry.
  • Delayed Healing: Healing time can vary due to factors like skin quality, smoking, and individual health. Proper nutrition, rest, and avoiding tobacco products can aid in a smoother recovery process.

How to Choose the Right Doctor and Hospital

Selecting a qualified doctor and hospital is crucial for a successful and satisfying breast lift outcome. Researching board-certified plastic surgeons with extensive experience in breast procedures can ensure that your provider has the necessary skills. Look for doctors who regularly perform breast lifts and have a strong portfolio of before-and-after photos. Verifying credentials and reading patient reviews can also help gauge the quality of care.

In addition to choosing a reputable doctor, selecting a hospital or clinic with international accreditation is important. Ensure that the facility follows strict safety protocols and offers support services, including postoperative care and consultations. Patients should feel comfortable discussing their goals and concerns with their chosen provider, and a reputable facility will offer transparency in communication, costs, and expected results.

Frequently Asked Questions

What actually happens during hyperstimulation of the ovaries?

The patient will take injectable FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) for eight to eleven days, depending on how long the follicles take to mature. This hormone is produced naturally in a woman’s body causing one egg to develop per cycle. Taking the injectable FSH causes several follicles to develop at once, at approximately the same rate. The development is monitored with vaginal ultrasounds and following the patient’s levels of estradiol and progesterone. FSH brand names include Repronex, Follistim, Menopur, Gonal-F and Bravelle. The patient injects herself daily.

What happens during egg retrieval?

When the follicles have developed enough to be harvested, the patient attends an appointment  where she is anesthetized and prepared for the procedure. Next, the doctor uses an ultrasound probe to guide a needle through the vaginal wall and into the follicle of the ovary. The thin needle draws the follicle fluid, which is then examined by an embryologist to find the eggs. The whole process takes about 20 minutes.

What happens to the eggs?

In the next step, the harvested eggs are then fertilized. If the sperm from the potential father, or in some cases, anonymous donor, has normal functionality, the eggs and sperm are placed together in a dish with a nutrient fluid, then incubated overnight to fertilize normally. If the sperm functionality is suboptimal, an embryologist uses Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection to inject a single sperm into a single egg with an extremely precise glass needle.  Once fertilization is complete, the embryos are assessed and prepared to be transferred to the patient’s uterus.

How are the embryos transferred back to the uterus?

The doctor and the patient will discuss the number of embryos to be transferred. The number of successfully fertilized eggs usually determines the number of eggs to be placed in the uterus. Embryos are transferred to the uterus with transabdominal ultrasound guidance. This process does not require anesthesia, but it can cause minor cervical or uterine discomfort. Following transfer, the patient is advised to take at least one days bed rest and two or three additional days of rest, then 10 to 12 days later, two pregnancy tests are scheduled to confirm success. Once two positive tests are completed, an obstetrical ultrasound is ordered to show the sac, fetal pole, yolk sac and fetal heart rate.

Embryoscope©

Built into this technology there is a microscope with a powerful camera that allows the uninterrupted monitoring of the embryo during its first hours of life. In this way, we can keep a close eye on the embryo, from the moment when the oocyte is inseminated and begins to divide into smaller and smaller cells, until it can be transferred to the uterus.
