Master Checkup

Steps Involved in IVF:

Procedure Description

A Master Checkup is an extensive, full-body medical evaluation designed to provide a comprehensive overview of an individual’s health. Often recommended as a proactive measure, it includes a series of diagnostic tests and assessments covering various systems in the body, such as cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, endocrine, and more. With the increasing emphasis on preventive healthcare, Master Checkups have become a popular choice for individuals seeking to identify potential health issues early, allowing for timely intervention and treatment.

The procedure typically starts with a series of baseline tests, including blood work, urine analysis, and imaging studies like X-rays, ultrasounds, and sometimes even CT or MRI scans, depending on the person’s health profile and risk factors. Physicians may also include cardiac tests, lung function assessments, and hormonal evaluations. Each component of the checkup is aimed at uncovering any hidden health risks, making it a critical option for those looking to take control of their health proactively.

For individuals with a family history of specific health conditions, such as heart disease or diabetes, the checkup may be tailored to include more targeted tests. For example, those at risk of cardiac conditions may undergo stress tests, echocardiograms, or lipid profiles, while individuals with metabolic concerns may receive glucose tolerance tests and thyroid evaluations. The comprehensive nature of the Master Checkup allows healthcare providers to form a well-rounded picture of an individual's health, which helps in crafting personalized health plans.

Procedure Duration

The duration of a Master Checkup varies based on its comprehensiveness and the specific tests included. Generally, the procedure is completed within a day or two, allowing patients to receive a complete set of results without extended hospital stays. However, some tests may require additional time for detailed analysis, especially when specialized imaging or biopsies are needed.

A typical Master Checkup starts with a preliminary consultation where healthcare professionals review the patient's medical history, current symptoms, and lifestyle factors. This discussion often helps customize the checkup to meet individual needs. After initial assessments, patients proceed to various diagnostic tests, including blood draws, imaging studies, and functional tests. Each phase is scheduled to optimize efficiency and reduce wait times, making it a streamlined experience.

Once the checkup is complete, patients typically have a follow-up appointment to discuss the results with their healthcare provider. This meeting covers any detected health concerns, and physicians may recommend lifestyle changes or further tests if necessary. The efficiency of the Master Checkup is part of its appeal, as patients can often complete the process in a short amount of time while gaining a thorough understanding of their health.

Risks & Considerations

  • Exposure to Radiation: Some imaging studies, such as CT scans, involve low levels of radiation, which may pose a risk if repeated frequently. Discussing the necessity of each test with a healthcare provider is crucial.
  • False Positives or Negatives: As with any diagnostic tests, there’s a chance of false results that can lead to unnecessary stress or missed health issues. Comprehensive interpretation by a skilled doctor is essential.
  • Invasive Testing: In some cases, the checkup may include invasive procedures like blood draws or biopsies, which may cause temporary discomfort or, rarely, infection.
  • Unnecessary Testing: Over-testing can sometimes occur in an attempt to be thorough, leading to additional costs and, occasionally, more anxiety. Patients should discuss with their provider which tests are genuinely necessary for them.
  • Privacy Concerns: As with any medical procedure, it’s essential to confirm that the facility has secure systems in place for handling personal health data, especially when traveling abroad for treatment.

How to Choose the Right Doctor and Hospital

When selecting a provider for a Master Checkup, consider the facility's reputation, certification, and the experience of its medical professionals. Opt for hospitals that are accredited by recognized health organizations and have a solid history of treating international patients. It’s helpful to look for facilities that provide transparent information on their procedures and pricing to ensure you’re making an informed decision.

Additionally, selecting a doctor with experience in preventive medicine or internal medicine is advisable, as they can interpret a wide range of diagnostic tests effectively. Ask about their experience in conducting comprehensive health evaluations and their approach to patient care, especially if you have specific health concerns.

Frequently Asked Questions

What actually happens during hyperstimulation of the ovaries?

The patient will take injectable FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) for eight to eleven days, depending on how long the follicles take to mature. This hormone is produced naturally in a woman’s body causing one egg to develop per cycle. Taking the injectable FSH causes several follicles to develop at once, at approximately the same rate. The development is monitored with vaginal ultrasounds and following the patient’s levels of estradiol and progesterone. FSH brand names include Repronex, Follistim, Menopur, Gonal-F and Bravelle. The patient injects herself daily.

What happens during egg retrieval?

When the follicles have developed enough to be harvested, the patient attends an appointment  where she is anesthetized and prepared for the procedure. Next, the doctor uses an ultrasound probe to guide a needle through the vaginal wall and into the follicle of the ovary. The thin needle draws the follicle fluid, which is then examined by an embryologist to find the eggs. The whole process takes about 20 minutes.

What happens to the eggs?

In the next step, the harvested eggs are then fertilized. If the sperm from the potential father, or in some cases, anonymous donor, has normal functionality, the eggs and sperm are placed together in a dish with a nutrient fluid, then incubated overnight to fertilize normally. If the sperm functionality is suboptimal, an embryologist uses Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection to inject a single sperm into a single egg with an extremely precise glass needle.  Once fertilization is complete, the embryos are assessed and prepared to be transferred to the patient’s uterus.

How are the embryos transferred back to the uterus?

The doctor and the patient will discuss the number of embryos to be transferred. The number of successfully fertilized eggs usually determines the number of eggs to be placed in the uterus. Embryos are transferred to the uterus with transabdominal ultrasound guidance. This process does not require anesthesia, but it can cause minor cervical or uterine discomfort. Following transfer, the patient is advised to take at least one days bed rest and two or three additional days of rest, then 10 to 12 days later, two pregnancy tests are scheduled to confirm success. Once two positive tests are completed, an obstetrical ultrasound is ordered to show the sac, fetal pole, yolk sac and fetal heart rate.

Embryoscope©

Built into this technology there is a microscope with a powerful camera that allows the uninterrupted monitoring of the embryo during its first hours of life. In this way, we can keep a close eye on the embryo, from the moment when the oocyte is inseminated and begins to divide into smaller and smaller cells, until it can be transferred to the uterus.
