Massage

Steps Involved in IVF:

Procedure Description

Massage therapy is an ancient practice designed to relieve tension, reduce stress, and promote healing through the manipulation of muscles and soft tissues in the body. There are various massage techniques, each developed for specific therapeutic purposes, from Swedish massage for relaxation to deep tissue massage for pain relief and muscle recovery. The practice typically involves applying pressure, stroking, kneading, and even stretching muscles to release tension and enhance circulation.

A massage session usually starts with a consultation to understand the client's needs and any health concerns. Based on this, the therapist customizes the session, choosing techniques and pressure levels that will be most beneficial. Commonly used techniques include effleurage (long, sweeping strokes), petrissage (kneading and rolling), and tapotement (tapping or percussive movements). Some sessions also incorporate aromatherapy, hot stones, or oils for a holistic approach.

Massage therapy has evolved to serve various purposes beyond mere relaxation. Athletes benefit from sports massages to improve muscle recovery, while individuals with chronic pain conditions use therapeutic massage to manage symptoms. Furthermore, massage therapy has shown to benefit those suffering from anxiety and depression, making it a holistic solution to both physical and mental health challenges.

Procedure Duration

The duration of a massage session varies depending on the type and purpose of the massage. A standard session lasts between 60 to 90 minutes, although shorter sessions of 30 minutes or extended sessions of 120 minutes are also available. The therapist often begins with lighter strokes, gradually increasing pressure as muscles warm up and relax, allowing deeper access to muscle fibers without discomfort.

The frequency and length of treatment depend on individual needs and goals. For chronic conditions like back pain or stress management, weekly sessions may be recommended, while maintenance sessions may be spaced every two to four weeks. A full-body massage generally requires at least an hour to address all major muscle groups, while targeted massages, such as those for back or shoulders, can be effectively completed in 30 minutes.

Recovery time after a massage is generally minimal, though some individuals may experience soreness if they received a deep tissue massage. This soreness usually subsides within 24 hours. After a session, clients are encouraged to stay hydrated and avoid strenuous activities, as massage therapy releases toxins stored in muscles, which may cause slight fatigue or dizziness.

Benefits

  • Stress Reduction: Massage stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, which helps reduce cortisol levels and promotes relaxation.
  • Improved Circulation: By enhancing blood flow, massage helps deliver oxygen and nutrients to muscles, reducing soreness and stiffness.
  • Pain Relief: Techniques like deep tissue massage target specific pain points, easing muscle tension and providing relief from chronic pain.
  • Increased Flexibility: Regular massage can help maintain and improve joint mobility by reducing muscle stiffness and increasing elasticity.
  • Enhanced Immune Function: Massage has been shown to improve lymphatic drainage, which supports the immune system by flushing out toxins.

Risks & Considerations

  • Allergic Reactions to Oils and Lotions: Some individuals may experience skin irritation or allergic reactions to oils used in massage therapy. Informing the therapist of any known allergies beforehand can help prevent this.
  • Temporary Soreness: Post-massage soreness is common, especially after deep tissue sessions. This is typically mild and subsides within a day or two but may be uncomfortable for some.
  • Risk of Injury: Poor technique or excessive pressure can lead to muscle or joint injuries, particularly if the therapist is not well-trained. Always verify the qualifications of your therapist.
  • Underlying Health Conditions: Certain conditions, such as blood clotting disorders, fractures, or infections, may worsen with massage therapy. Consulting with a healthcare provider before receiving a massage is advised if you have any medical concerns.
  • Not a Substitute for Medical Treatment: While massage therapy can alleviate symptoms, it should not replace medical treatment for serious conditions like musculoskeletal injuries or chronic pain.

How to Choose the Right Doctor and Hospital

When selecting a therapist or wellness center for massage therapy, prioritize qualifications and certifications. Look for therapists who have completed formal training and are certified in specific techniques, as this ensures they understand the nuances of different massage practices and can tailor sessions to individual needs safely.

The facility itself is also crucial. Opt for centers that emphasize hygiene, professionalism, and comfort, as these factors significantly contribute to a positive experience. Reviews from past clients can offer insights into a center’s reputation, helping you make an informed decision about where to go for the best therapeutic experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

What actually happens during hyperstimulation of the ovaries?

The patient will take injectable FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) for eight to eleven days, depending on how long the follicles take to mature. This hormone is produced naturally in a woman’s body causing one egg to develop per cycle. Taking the injectable FSH causes several follicles to develop at once, at approximately the same rate. The development is monitored with vaginal ultrasounds and following the patient’s levels of estradiol and progesterone. FSH brand names include Repronex, Follistim, Menopur, Gonal-F and Bravelle. The patient injects herself daily.

What happens during egg retrieval?

When the follicles have developed enough to be harvested, the patient attends an appointment  where she is anesthetized and prepared for the procedure. Next, the doctor uses an ultrasound probe to guide a needle through the vaginal wall and into the follicle of the ovary. The thin needle draws the follicle fluid, which is then examined by an embryologist to find the eggs. The whole process takes about 20 minutes.

What happens to the eggs?

In the next step, the harvested eggs are then fertilized. If the sperm from the potential father, or in some cases, anonymous donor, has normal functionality, the eggs and sperm are placed together in a dish with a nutrient fluid, then incubated overnight to fertilize normally. If the sperm functionality is suboptimal, an embryologist uses Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection to inject a single sperm into a single egg with an extremely precise glass needle.  Once fertilization is complete, the embryos are assessed and prepared to be transferred to the patient’s uterus.

How are the embryos transferred back to the uterus?

The doctor and the patient will discuss the number of embryos to be transferred. The number of successfully fertilized eggs usually determines the number of eggs to be placed in the uterus. Embryos are transferred to the uterus with transabdominal ultrasound guidance. This process does not require anesthesia, but it can cause minor cervical or uterine discomfort. Following transfer, the patient is advised to take at least one days bed rest and two or three additional days of rest, then 10 to 12 days later, two pregnancy tests are scheduled to confirm success. Once two positive tests are completed, an obstetrical ultrasound is ordered to show the sac, fetal pole, yolk sac and fetal heart rate.

Embryoscope©

Built into this technology there is a microscope with a powerful camera that allows the uninterrupted monitoring of the embryo during its first hours of life. In this way, we can keep a close eye on the embryo, from the moment when the oocyte is inseminated and begins to divide into smaller and smaller cells, until it can be transferred to the uterus.
