Male Check Up (Below the Age of 40)

Steps Involved in IVF:

Procedure Description

A male check-up for those below the age of 40 is an important preventive health measure designed to assess a man’s overall health and detect early signs of potential health issues. This check-up generally includes a comprehensive series of screenings and diagnostic tests tailored to the age group’s specific health needs. Commonly covered areas include cardiovascular health, metabolic health, hormonal balance, reproductive health, and other vital indicators of physical well-being.

For men under 40, these check-ups may vary in focus but generally prioritize aspects like cholesterol levels, blood pressure, blood sugar, and screenings for early markers of chronic conditions, such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Additionally, these examinations aim to evaluate physical fitness and overall lifestyle health, such as diet, exercise, sleep quality, and stress management. Given that many health issues begin silently and escalate over time, early detection through regular check-ups can significantly reduce the risk of serious health conditions down the line.

Another critical element of a male check-up is reproductive health. Fertility and hormone levels are often assessed, especially for individuals who may have concerns or a family history of reproductive health conditions. The check-up may include hormone analysis, prostate examination, and sometimes genetic counseling to address family histories of specific health conditions. This comprehensive approach allows medical professionals to create a holistic health profile and provide tailored advice for maintaining long-term health.

Procedure Duration

The duration of a male check-up varies depending on the range of tests and assessments included. A standard comprehensive check-up can take between two to four hours if all tests are done on the same day. Typically, a check-up involves three main phases: initial consultation, testing, and post-assessment discussion.

During the initial consultation, the physician will review the individual’s medical history, discuss any present symptoms or concerns, and assess lifestyle factors. This phase typically takes around 30 minutes to an hour. Afterward, the actual testing begins, which may include blood tests, urine analysis, imaging studies, and physical exams. Blood tests generally take about 15-30 minutes, while imaging scans, if required, may add additional time. This testing phase can take one to two hours, depending on the complexity and number of tests ordered.

Following the tests, results are usually reviewed within a few days. Many facilities offer post-check-up consultations where the physician explains the results, discusses any areas of concern, and provides personalized recommendations for lifestyle adjustments or further tests if needed. While some results are available immediately, others, particularly hormone tests and genetic screenings, may require a follow-up appointment for detailed discussion.

Risks & Considerations

  • Over-Diagnosis: Some screenings may identify conditions or abnormalities that may not require immediate treatment, leading to unnecessary stress or medical interventions.
  • False Positives: Certain tests can yield false-positive results, which might result in further invasive testing and unwarranted anxiety.
  • Cost: Comprehensive check-ups may be costly, especially in countries with higher healthcare fees. It’s essential to consider all costs, including potential follow-up appointments.
  • Privacy Concerns: Personal health data should be protected, especially if traveling abroad. Be sure to select a healthcare facility with a robust data protection policy.
  • Travel Recovery Time: Some tests, such as blood work or imaging, might result in slight fatigue, and men traveling for their check-up may need time to rest before returning home.

Frequently Asked Questions

What actually happens during hyperstimulation of the ovaries?

The patient will take injectable FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) for eight to eleven days, depending on how long the follicles take to mature. This hormone is produced naturally in a woman’s body causing one egg to develop per cycle. Taking the injectable FSH causes several follicles to develop at once, at approximately the same rate. The development is monitored with vaginal ultrasounds and following the patient’s levels of estradiol and progesterone. FSH brand names include Repronex, Follistim, Menopur, Gonal-F and Bravelle. The patient injects herself daily.

What happens during egg retrieval?

When the follicles have developed enough to be harvested, the patient attends an appointment  where she is anesthetized and prepared for the procedure. Next, the doctor uses an ultrasound probe to guide a needle through the vaginal wall and into the follicle of the ovary. The thin needle draws the follicle fluid, which is then examined by an embryologist to find the eggs. The whole process takes about 20 minutes.

What happens to the eggs?

In the next step, the harvested eggs are then fertilized. If the sperm from the potential father, or in some cases, anonymous donor, has normal functionality, the eggs and sperm are placed together in a dish with a nutrient fluid, then incubated overnight to fertilize normally. If the sperm functionality is suboptimal, an embryologist uses Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection to inject a single sperm into a single egg with an extremely precise glass needle.  Once fertilization is complete, the embryos are assessed and prepared to be transferred to the patient’s uterus.

How are the embryos transferred back to the uterus?

The doctor and the patient will discuss the number of embryos to be transferred. The number of successfully fertilized eggs usually determines the number of eggs to be placed in the uterus. Embryos are transferred to the uterus with transabdominal ultrasound guidance. This process does not require anesthesia, but it can cause minor cervical or uterine discomfort. Following transfer, the patient is advised to take at least one days bed rest and two or three additional days of rest, then 10 to 12 days later, two pregnancy tests are scheduled to confirm success. Once two positive tests are completed, an obstetrical ultrasound is ordered to show the sac, fetal pole, yolk sac and fetal heart rate.

Embryoscope©

Built into this technology there is a microscope with a powerful camera that allows the uninterrupted monitoring of the embryo during its first hours of life. In this way, we can keep a close eye on the embryo, from the moment when the oocyte is inseminated and begins to divide into smaller and smaller cells, until it can be transferred to the uterus.
