Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia)

Steps Involved in IVF:

Procedure Description

Male breast reduction, also known as gynecomastia surgery, addresses the presence of excess fat, glandular tissue, or both in the male chest area. Gynecomastia is a condition that can arise due to hormonal imbalances, genetics, obesity, or certain medications. This condition often leads to physical and emotional discomfort, with many men seeking a permanent solution through surgery. Male breast reduction offers an effective means to contour the chest, giving it a firmer, flatter appearance that aligns with masculine chest aesthetics.

The procedure generally involves the removal of excess fat, glandular tissue, and, in some cases, skin to restore a more proportionate appearance. Surgeons use different techniques based on the patient’s unique anatomy and the severity of the gynecomastia. For those with minor cases, liposuction may be sufficient to remove the excess fat and reshape the chest. For more severe cases involving dense glandular tissue, a combination of liposuction and excision is typically used. Excision techniques may require an incision around the areola or along the chest wall, ensuring precise removal of tissue.

Gynecomastia surgery has become increasingly refined, offering both functional and aesthetic benefits. Patients typically experience not only an improved physical appearance but also enhanced self-confidence. With advancements in surgical methods, scarring is minimized, and recovery is streamlined, making it a popular choice for individuals seeking long-term relief from this condition.

Procedure Duration

The duration of male breast reduction surgery varies depending on the techniques used and the extent of tissue removal. Generally, the procedure takes around 1 to 3 hours, though more complex cases may require additional time. Initially, patients are given anesthesia, either general or local with sedation, to ensure comfort during surgery. The surgeon then makes small incisions for liposuction or excision, carefully targeting areas to minimize visible scarring.

The procedure can be divided into several phases. The first phase involves liposuction, if necessary, to remove excess fat. Cannulas (thin tubes) are inserted through small incisions to suction out fatty tissue, contouring the chest. In cases where glandular tissue is prevalent, an excision phase follows. Here, the surgeon removes the denser tissue through incisions around the areola or chest. Once the tissue is removed, the surgeon reshapes the chest area for a natural look.

Recovery from male breast reduction surgery is relatively straightforward but requires adherence to specific guidelines for optimal healing. Patients are generally advised to take at least one week off from work or strenuous activities. During this time, wearing a compression garment helps reduce swelling and provides support to the chest. Most patients can resume light activities within a week, but full recovery and return to rigorous exercise may take several weeks to ensure optimal healing.

Benefits

  • Improved Physical Appearance: Reduces excess fat and tissue for a more contoured, masculine chest.
  • Enhanced Self-Confidence: Many patients experience a boost in self-esteem after achieving a flatter chest profile.
  • Permanent Solution: Once glandular tissue is removed, the effects are typically long-lasting.
  • Reduced Physical Discomfort: Alleviates any discomfort caused by excess tissue, such as soreness or chafing.
  • Minimally Invasive Techniques: Advanced liposuction and excision methods offer reduced scarring and faster recovery times.

  • Asymmetry: In some cases, there may be slight asymmetry in the chest area after surgery, which could require additional adjustments.
  • Loss of Sensation: Some patients experience temporary or permanent loss of nipple sensation, particularly if extensive tissue removal is involved.
  • Infection: Like all surgeries, male breast reduction carries a risk of infection, which can be managed with proper hygiene and care.
  • Hematoma or Fluid Accumulation: Fluid build-up or blood accumulation under the skin can occur, sometimes requiring additional procedures to resolve.

How to Choose the Right Doctor and Hospital

When selecting a doctor and hospital for gynecomastia surgery, it is essential to prioritize qualifications and experience. Look for a board-certified plastic surgeon with specific expertise in male breast reduction procedures. Verify the surgeon’s track record, paying attention to before-and-after images, patient reviews, and any specialized training they may have in gynecomastia surgery.

In addition to selecting a qualified surgeon, it’s important to choose a hospital or clinic with modern facilities and a strong focus on patient safety. Look for establishments that follow international healthcare standards and have a dedicated team for post-operative care. An initial consultation is a valuable opportunity to discuss the procedure in detail, understand the facility’s practices, and ensure you feel comfortable with your choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

What actually happens during hyperstimulation of the ovaries?

The patient will take injectable FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) for eight to eleven days, depending on how long the follicles take to mature. This hormone is produced naturally in a woman’s body causing one egg to develop per cycle. Taking the injectable FSH causes several follicles to develop at once, at approximately the same rate. The development is monitored with vaginal ultrasounds and following the patient’s levels of estradiol and progesterone. FSH brand names include Repronex, Follistim, Menopur, Gonal-F and Bravelle. The patient injects herself daily.

What happens during egg retrieval?

When the follicles have developed enough to be harvested, the patient attends an appointment  where she is anesthetized and prepared for the procedure. Next, the doctor uses an ultrasound probe to guide a needle through the vaginal wall and into the follicle of the ovary. The thin needle draws the follicle fluid, which is then examined by an embryologist to find the eggs. The whole process takes about 20 minutes.

What happens to the eggs?

In the next step, the harvested eggs are then fertilized. If the sperm from the potential father, or in some cases, anonymous donor, has normal functionality, the eggs and sperm are placed together in a dish with a nutrient fluid, then incubated overnight to fertilize normally. If the sperm functionality is suboptimal, an embryologist uses Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection to inject a single sperm into a single egg with an extremely precise glass needle.  Once fertilization is complete, the embryos are assessed and prepared to be transferred to the patient’s uterus.

How are the embryos transferred back to the uterus?

The doctor and the patient will discuss the number of embryos to be transferred. The number of successfully fertilized eggs usually determines the number of eggs to be placed in the uterus. Embryos are transferred to the uterus with transabdominal ultrasound guidance. This process does not require anesthesia, but it can cause minor cervical or uterine discomfort. Following transfer, the patient is advised to take at least one days bed rest and two or three additional days of rest, then 10 to 12 days later, two pregnancy tests are scheduled to confirm success. Once two positive tests are completed, an obstetrical ultrasound is ordered to show the sac, fetal pole, yolk sac and fetal heart rate.

Embryoscope©

Built into this technology there is a microscope with a powerful camera that allows the uninterrupted monitoring of the embryo during its first hours of life. In this way, we can keep a close eye on the embryo, from the moment when the oocyte is inseminated and begins to divide into smaller and smaller cells, until it can be transferred to the uterus.
