Liver Care

Steps Involved in IVF:

Procedure Description

Liver care encompasses a variety of treatments and procedures aimed at addressing liver diseases such as cirrhosis, liver cancer, hepatitis, and fatty liver disease. The liver is one of the body’s most vital organs, responsible for detoxifying the blood, producing bile for digestion, storing energy, and supporting metabolism. With its multifaceted role, maintaining liver health is essential, and liver care can involve a range of approaches from lifestyle changes to medical interventions like surgery or transplantation.

The most common liver care procedures include liver resection, liver transplant, and minimally invasive treatments such as radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and transarterial chemoembolization (TACE). Liver resection involves surgically removing a portion of the liver affected by disease, while a liver transplant replaces a diseased liver with a healthy one from a donor. Minimally invasive treatments target tumors or diseased areas using localized techniques without the need for extensive surgery.

Liver care also includes managing chronic conditions like hepatitis or cirrhosis through medication, diet, and regular monitoring. Advanced diagnostic tools such as MRIs, CT scans, and biopsies help doctors assess liver function and detect abnormalities early. Non-surgical treatments, including antiviral medications or enzyme inhibitors, are used to treat hepatitis B or C, while lifestyle interventions can help reverse fatty liver disease.

Procedure Duration

The duration of liver care procedures varies significantly depending on the treatment type. Surgical procedures like liver resection or transplant typically require hospitalization and longer recovery times, while minimally invasive treatments may involve shorter stays and faster recovery.

A liver resection surgery can take between 2 to 6 hours, depending on the extent of the liver removed and the complexity of the case. Patients usually stay in the hospital for 5 to 7 days post-surgery and require several weeks for full recovery. A liver transplant, being a more complex procedure, can take 6 to 12 hours and involves a recovery period that may extend up to 3 months, with a hospital stay ranging from 10 days to several weeks, depending on complications.

Minimally invasive procedures like TACE or RFA can be completed in 1 to 3 hours. These treatments often involve a shorter hospital stay—typically 1 to 2 days—and allow for quicker recovery. However, regular follow-up visits are essential to monitor the liver’s condition and assess the success of the treatment.

Non-surgical care for liver disease, such as managing hepatitis or cirrhosis with medication and lifestyle changes, involves an ongoing commitment. Patients often need lifelong monitoring, periodic liver function tests, and imaging studies to ensure the liver remains healthy and functions optimally.

Benefits

  • Improved liver function: Treatments can help restore or enhance the liver’s ability to detoxify and metabolize nutrients.
  • Extended lifespan: Liver care, especially for conditions like liver cancer or cirrhosis, can significantly improve survival rates.
  • Minimally invasive options: Many liver treatments, such as TACE and RFA, offer less invasive alternatives to traditional surgery, leading to quicker recovery times.
  • Management of chronic liver diseases: Medications and lifestyle changes can help manage and even reverse the progression of liver diseases like hepatitis or fatty liver disease.
  • Enhanced quality of life: Effective treatment for liver disease can relieve symptoms such as fatigue, jaundice, and abdominal discomfort, leading to an improved quality of life.

Risks & Considerations

  • Surgical complications: Liver surgeries, including resections and transplants, carry risks such as infection, bleeding, and bile leakage.
  • Rejection of transplanted liver: In cases of liver transplantation, there is always the risk of the body rejecting the new liver, necessitating immunosuppressive medications.
  • Recurrence of liver disease: Some liver conditions, like cancer or cirrhosis, can recur even after treatment, requiring ongoing care and monitoring.
  • Side effects from medication: Patients undergoing treatment for hepatitis or post-transplant care may experience side effects from antiviral medications or immunosuppressants, including fatigue, nausea, or weakened immune response.
  • Financial costs: Liver care procedures, particularly transplants, can be expensive, and the cost of long-term care, follow-up visits, and medications should be considered when planning treatment.

How to Choose the Right Doctor and Hospital

Selecting the right doctor and hospital for liver care is crucial for the success of the procedure. Start by researching doctors who specialize in liver diseases and treatments. Look for professionals with extensive experience, particularly in handling the specific liver condition you are dealing with. It’s important to choose a doctor who is well-versed in both surgical and non-surgical liver care options, ensuring that you receive the most appropriate treatment for your condition.

When choosing a hospital, focus on those that have a strong track record in liver care and offer comprehensive treatment programs. Look for hospitals that are accredited and have state-of-the-art equipment for diagnostics and surgery. Additionally, facilities that provide robust aftercare and rehabilitation services will support a smoother recovery process.

Frequently Asked Questions

What actually happens during hyperstimulation of the ovaries?

The patient will take injectable FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) for eight to eleven days, depending on how long the follicles take to mature. This hormone is produced naturally in a woman’s body causing one egg to develop per cycle. Taking the injectable FSH causes several follicles to develop at once, at approximately the same rate. The development is monitored with vaginal ultrasounds and following the patient’s levels of estradiol and progesterone. FSH brand names include Repronex, Follistim, Menopur, Gonal-F and Bravelle. The patient injects herself daily.

What happens during egg retrieval?

When the follicles have developed enough to be harvested, the patient attends an appointment  where she is anesthetized and prepared for the procedure. Next, the doctor uses an ultrasound probe to guide a needle through the vaginal wall and into the follicle of the ovary. The thin needle draws the follicle fluid, which is then examined by an embryologist to find the eggs. The whole process takes about 20 minutes.

What happens to the eggs?

In the next step, the harvested eggs are then fertilized. If the sperm from the potential father, or in some cases, anonymous donor, has normal functionality, the eggs and sperm are placed together in a dish with a nutrient fluid, then incubated overnight to fertilize normally. If the sperm functionality is suboptimal, an embryologist uses Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection to inject a single sperm into a single egg with an extremely precise glass needle.  Once fertilization is complete, the embryos are assessed and prepared to be transferred to the patient’s uterus.

How are the embryos transferred back to the uterus?

The doctor and the patient will discuss the number of embryos to be transferred. The number of successfully fertilized eggs usually determines the number of eggs to be placed in the uterus. Embryos are transferred to the uterus with transabdominal ultrasound guidance. This process does not require anesthesia, but it can cause minor cervical or uterine discomfort. Following transfer, the patient is advised to take at least one days bed rest and two or three additional days of rest, then 10 to 12 days later, two pregnancy tests are scheduled to confirm success. Once two positive tests are completed, an obstetrical ultrasound is ordered to show the sac, fetal pole, yolk sac and fetal heart rate.

Embryoscope©

Built into this technology there is a microscope with a powerful camera that allows the uninterrupted monitoring of the embryo during its first hours of life. In this way, we can keep a close eye on the embryo, from the moment when the oocyte is inseminated and begins to divide into smaller and smaller cells, until it can be transferred to the uterus.
