Lip Reduction
Steps Involved in IVF:
Procedure Description
Lip reduction surgery, also known as cheiloplasty, is a cosmetic procedure designed to reduce the size and volume of the lips. It’s an ideal option for individuals who feel their lips are disproportionate to their facial features, or for those who have experienced an imbalance due to genetic factors, previous surgeries, or trauma. By removing excess lip tissue and reshaping the area, this procedure can help achieve a more balanced, aesthetically pleasing facial appearance.
The surgery is often performed on either the upper or lower lip, or both, depending on the patient’s unique needs and desired outcome. Typically, the surgeon creates an incision on the inside of the lip, through which excess tissue and fat are removed. This discreet incision placement helps minimize visible scarring and allows for natural-looking results. Additionally, the surgeon may reshape the lip contours to align with the overall facial structure, ensuring a harmonious aesthetic.
Lip reduction is generally performed under local anesthesia with sedation, although in some cases, general anesthesia may be recommended based on the patient’s preferences and the complexity of the surgery. Since it is a relatively low-risk procedure, lip reduction can be completed as an outpatient surgery, allowing patients to return home the same day after their recovery in the facility.
Procedure Duration
The duration of lip reduction surgery varies depending on the complexity of the procedure and whether it involves one or both lips. Typically, the surgery takes about 30 minutes to an hour to complete. However, if additional modifications are needed to correct imbalances or create symmetry, the surgeon may require additional time.
After the initial procedure, patients will spend some time in a recovery area where they are monitored by medical staff to ensure no immediate post-operative complications arise. During this time, any bleeding, swelling, or discomfort can be managed by the medical team to ensure a safe discharge.
The recovery process for lip reduction generally spans two weeks. During the first few days, patients may experience swelling, tenderness, and mild bruising around the lips. Although many patients can resume light activities after a few days, it’s recommended to avoid strenuous activities and excessive lip movement for about a week to allow proper healing. Full results are typically visible after the swelling subsides, with final outcomes settling within three to four weeks.

Risks & Considerations
- Swelling and Bruising: Post-surgical swelling and bruising are common, and patients should be prepared for several days of discomfort as their lips heal.
- Infection: As with any surgical procedure, there’s a risk of infection. Following post-operative care instructions and maintaining proper hygiene are essential to reduce this risk.
- Asymmetry: In rare cases, patients may experience uneven results or asymmetry. Selecting an experienced surgeon can minimize this risk, and follow-up consultations can address any issues.
- Nerve Damage: Although uncommon, lip reduction surgery may affect lip sensation due to minor nerve disruption, resulting in temporary numbness.
- Scarring: While incisions are typically placed inside the lip, scarring can occasionally be visible or noticeable, especially if healing complications arise.
How to Choose the Right Doctor and Hospital
Choosing the right medical professional and facility for lip reduction surgery is essential for achieving optimal results and minimizing risks. Start by researching doctors with a strong background in cosmetic surgery, particularly in facial aesthetics. Look for board-certified professionals who specialize in lip reduction and facial symmetry. Their expertise and experience will be instrumental in creating natural-looking results while addressing individual concerns.
When selecting a hospital or clinic, consider factors such as facility accreditation, patient reviews, and the overall reputation of the institution in cosmetic surgery. It’s also important to assess the quality of pre- and post-operative care provided, as this ensures a smoother recovery process. By carefully evaluating these factors, patients can choose a doctor and hospital that best meets their needs, providing a safe and satisfying experience.

Frequently Asked Questions
What actually happens during hyperstimulation of the ovaries?
The patient will take injectable FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) for eight to eleven days, depending on how long the follicles take to mature. This hormone is produced naturally in a woman’s body causing one egg to develop per cycle. Taking the injectable FSH causes several follicles to develop at once, at approximately the same rate. The development is monitored with vaginal ultrasounds and following the patient’s levels of estradiol and progesterone. FSH brand names include Repronex, Follistim, Menopur, Gonal-F and Bravelle. The patient injects herself daily.
What happens during egg retrieval?
When the follicles have developed enough to be harvested, the patient attends an appointment where she is anesthetized and prepared for the procedure. Next, the doctor uses an ultrasound probe to guide a needle through the vaginal wall and into the follicle of the ovary. The thin needle draws the follicle fluid, which is then examined by an embryologist to find the eggs. The whole process takes about 20 minutes.
What happens to the eggs?
In the next step, the harvested eggs are then fertilized. If the sperm from the potential father, or in some cases, anonymous donor, has normal functionality, the eggs and sperm are placed together in a dish with a nutrient fluid, then incubated overnight to fertilize normally. If the sperm functionality is suboptimal, an embryologist uses Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection to inject a single sperm into a single egg with an extremely precise glass needle. Once fertilization is complete, the embryos are assessed and prepared to be transferred to the patient’s uterus.
How are the embryos transferred back to the uterus?
The doctor and the patient will discuss the number of embryos to be transferred. The number of successfully fertilized eggs usually determines the number of eggs to be placed in the uterus. Embryos are transferred to the uterus with transabdominal ultrasound guidance. This process does not require anesthesia, but it can cause minor cervical or uterine discomfort. Following transfer, the patient is advised to take at least one days bed rest and two or three additional days of rest, then 10 to 12 days later, two pregnancy tests are scheduled to confirm success. Once two positive tests are completed, an obstetrical ultrasound is ordered to show the sac, fetal pole, yolk sac and fetal heart rate.
Embryoscope©
Built into this technology there is a microscope with a powerful camera that allows the uninterrupted monitoring of the embryo during its first hours of life. In this way, we can keep a close eye on the embryo, from the moment when the oocyte is inseminated and begins to divide into smaller and smaller cells, until it can be transferred to the uterus.
