Lip Contouring
Steps Involved in IVF:
Procedure Description
Lip contouring is a cosmetic procedure designed to reshape and enhance the lips, providing more volume, definition, and symmetry. The treatment can address various concerns, including thin lips, lack of definition, or asymmetry, resulting in a fuller, aesthetically pleasing appearance. Common methods for lip contouring include injectable fillers, fat transfer, or lip implants, each tailored to meet specific patient needs and desired outcomes. While injectable fillers are popular due to their minimally invasive nature, other techniques, like fat transfer or implants, offer longer-lasting results.
In lip contouring, dermal fillers are often used to add volume and define the lip border, providing a subtle or dramatic enhancement depending on the patient’s preference. These fillers are generally made from hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the body that adds moisture and plumpness to the skin. During the procedure, a trained practitioner injects the filler in precise areas around the lips, sculpting them to create a more defined and fuller shape. For those opting for fat transfer, fat cells are harvested from other areas of the body, purified, and then injected into the lips. This approach provides a natural look and feel, appealing to individuals who prefer autologous materials.
Lip implants, though less common than injectables or fat transfer, offer a more permanent solution. These soft, silicone-based implants are surgically inserted to provide consistent volume and shape. Regardless of the method chosen, lip contouring is generally performed in an outpatient setting under local anesthesia, ensuring a comfortable experience with minimal downtime. The choice of technique will depend on various factors, including the desired look, longevity of results, and personal preferences.
Procedure Duration
The duration of a lip contouring procedure can vary depending on the method chosen and the extent of contouring desired. Injectable fillers, the most common option, generally take around 15 to 30 minutes to complete. This approach requires minimal preparation and can often be done in a single visit. Patients opting for filler-based contouring can see results immediately after the procedure, although minor swelling and bruising are common for a few days.
For those choosing a fat transfer technique, the procedure is more involved, taking approximately 1 to 2 hours. This method includes an initial step to harvest fat cells from areas such as the abdomen or thighs, followed by processing and purification of the fat before it is injected into the lips. Patients undergoing fat transfer might experience a slightly longer recovery period, typically ranging from a week to ten days, as the body adjusts to the new lip structure.
Lip implants are a surgical option that takes around 1 to 2 hours, requiring slightly more preparation and recovery time compared to injectables and fat transfer. Patients undergoing implant surgery may need a few weeks to fully recover, as incisions around the lips heal and any swelling subsides. Regardless of the method chosen, patients can expect full results within 1 to 3 weeks, although minor adjustments or follow-up appointments may be required to ensure optimal outcomes.

Risks & Considerations
- Allergic Reactions: Some individuals may have an allergic reaction to dermal fillers or anesthesia, so a consultation with allergy testing may be advisable beforehand.
- Swelling and Bruising: Temporary swelling and bruising are common with lip contouring, particularly with injectable fillers or fat transfer procedures.
- Infection: As with any procedure involving incisions or injections, there is a risk of infection if proper post-operative care is not followed.
- Asymmetry: Minor asymmetry may occur post-procedure, especially with fillers. A follow-up session can address any necessary adjustments.
- Scarring (for Implants): Lip implants may carry a slight risk of scarring around the incision sites, though this is typically minimal and fades over time with proper care.
How to Choose the Right Doctor and Hospital
When selecting a doctor and hospital for lip contouring, prioritize practitioners who specialize in facial and cosmetic procedures with extensive experience in lip enhancement. Board certification and credentials in aesthetic medicine or plastic surgery are essential to ensure the highest standards of practice. It’s advisable to ask for before-and-after photos of previous clients and to read reviews from other patients. Consultation sessions can provide insight into a doctor’s approach, allowing you to determine if their style aligns with your aesthetic goals.
Equally important is the choice of hospital or clinic, as top-tier facilities often provide advanced equipment and follow strict hygiene protocols, minimizing the risk of complications. Opt for accredited centers that meet international standards for safety and patient care, as this ensures you receive high-quality treatment and support during your procedure. Conducting thorough research on both the doctor and clinic will help ensure a safe and satisfying lip contouring experience.

Frequently Asked Questions
What actually happens during hyperstimulation of the ovaries?
The patient will take injectable FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) for eight to eleven days, depending on how long the follicles take to mature. This hormone is produced naturally in a woman’s body causing one egg to develop per cycle. Taking the injectable FSH causes several follicles to develop at once, at approximately the same rate. The development is monitored with vaginal ultrasounds and following the patient’s levels of estradiol and progesterone. FSH brand names include Repronex, Follistim, Menopur, Gonal-F and Bravelle. The patient injects herself daily.
What happens during egg retrieval?
When the follicles have developed enough to be harvested, the patient attends an appointment where she is anesthetized and prepared for the procedure. Next, the doctor uses an ultrasound probe to guide a needle through the vaginal wall and into the follicle of the ovary. The thin needle draws the follicle fluid, which is then examined by an embryologist to find the eggs. The whole process takes about 20 minutes.
What happens to the eggs?
In the next step, the harvested eggs are then fertilized. If the sperm from the potential father, or in some cases, anonymous donor, has normal functionality, the eggs and sperm are placed together in a dish with a nutrient fluid, then incubated overnight to fertilize normally. If the sperm functionality is suboptimal, an embryologist uses Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection to inject a single sperm into a single egg with an extremely precise glass needle. Once fertilization is complete, the embryos are assessed and prepared to be transferred to the patient’s uterus.
How are the embryos transferred back to the uterus?
The doctor and the patient will discuss the number of embryos to be transferred. The number of successfully fertilized eggs usually determines the number of eggs to be placed in the uterus. Embryos are transferred to the uterus with transabdominal ultrasound guidance. This process does not require anesthesia, but it can cause minor cervical or uterine discomfort. Following transfer, the patient is advised to take at least one days bed rest and two or three additional days of rest, then 10 to 12 days later, two pregnancy tests are scheduled to confirm success. Once two positive tests are completed, an obstetrical ultrasound is ordered to show the sac, fetal pole, yolk sac and fetal heart rate.
Embryoscope©
Built into this technology there is a microscope with a powerful camera that allows the uninterrupted monitoring of the embryo during its first hours of life. In this way, we can keep a close eye on the embryo, from the moment when the oocyte is inseminated and begins to divide into smaller and smaller cells, until it can be transferred to the uterus.
