Lip Augmentation
Steps Involved in IVF:
Procedure Description
Lip augmentation is a cosmetic procedure designed to enhance the fullness and shape of the lips, giving them a more youthful and plump appearance. This popular treatment is often sought by individuals seeking a more defined lip contour, correction of asymmetry, or the addition of volume to naturally thin lips. The procedure generally involves the injection of a filler material—most commonly hyaluronic acid (HA), a natural substance found in the body that attracts and retains moisture, giving lips a hydrated and voluminous appearance. Other options may include fat transfer from other body areas, autologous fillers, or synthetic implants, though HA remains the most widely used due to its effectiveness and safety profile.
Hyaluronic acid lip fillers, which are commonly available under several brand names, are preferred for their temporary nature, allowing patients to reassess their lip volume over time. These fillers are gradually absorbed by the body, typically lasting between 6 to 12 months, after which follow-up treatments can be scheduled for maintenance. The process is straightforward, with minimal downtime and side effects, making it an appealing option for those looking to improve their appearance with little interruption to daily life.
In addition to HA fillers, some patients may opt for permanent lip implants or fat transfer for a more lasting solution. These procedures require a different approach and may involve minor surgery, as well as a longer recovery period. However, most lip augmentation procedures are minimally invasive, with quick recovery and a high satisfaction rate among patients. Lip augmentation can subtly enhance facial balance and provide a fuller, smoother lip profile, resulting in an overall rejuvenated look.
Procedure Duration
The duration of a lip augmentation procedure depends on the chosen method. Hyaluronic acid fillers, the most common approach, typically take between 30 to 60 minutes to complete. This includes a pre-treatment consultation, the application of a topical numbing cream, and the injection process. Patients can expect to spend about 10 to 15 minutes on preparation, during which the injector will evaluate lip structure and discuss desired outcomes. The numbing cream is then applied for about 10 minutes, making the injections more comfortable.
Once the numbing takes effect, the actual injection process generally takes 10 to 20 minutes. The provider will carefully inject the filler into specific areas of the lips to achieve a balanced, natural-looking result. This part of the process is highly precise, with the injector continuously assessing symmetry and shape. Following the injections, patients are usually given instructions on how to care for their lips during the recovery period. Minor swelling and tenderness are common in the first few days, but most patients can return to their daily activities immediately after the procedure.
For those opting for permanent lip implants or fat transfer, the procedure time may be longer, ranging from 60 to 90 minutes. These options may involve local anesthesia and a more complex process, with several days of downtime recommended. Recovery from filler-based lip augmentation is usually short, with full results visible within a few days. Patients choosing a surgical approach should expect a slightly longer recovery period, often around one to two weeks for swelling to subside completely.

Risks & Considerations
- Allergic Reactions: Although rare, some individuals may experience an allergic reaction to filler ingredients. Always discuss any allergies with the provider beforehand.
- Swelling and Bruising: Temporary swelling and bruising are common following lip augmentation, especially with injectable fillers. These effects typically subside within a few days.
- Asymmetry or Uneven Results: Achieving symmetrical lips requires skill; if improperly injected, fillers can lead to uneven appearance. It is essential to choose a qualified practitioner.
- Infection: Although minimal, there is a risk of infection, especially with injectable or surgical procedures. Follow post-care instructions to reduce this risk.
- Lumpiness or Nodules: Some patients may develop lumps or nodules in the lips post-procedure. These can often be corrected with follow-up treatments or massage.
How to Choose the Right Doctor and Hospital
When selecting a provider for lip augmentation, prioritize experience and specialization in cosmetic procedures. It is advisable to review the provider’s credentials, including their certifications, years of experience, and reputation in the field. A certified specialist with a focus on aesthetic treatments will likely offer better results than a general practitioner. Look for reviews from previous patients, especially if traveling for treatment, as these offer insight into both the quality of care and patient satisfaction.
Additionally, ensure that the facility adheres to international health and safety standards. Accredited hospitals and clinics provide a level of reassurance, as they are typically subjected to regular inspections and must meet stringent requirements. Transparency regarding techniques, potential outcomes, and post-procedure care is vital, as a reputable provider will guide patients through the process thoroughly.

Frequently Asked Questions
What actually happens during hyperstimulation of the ovaries?
The patient will take injectable FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) for eight to eleven days, depending on how long the follicles take to mature. This hormone is produced naturally in a woman’s body causing one egg to develop per cycle. Taking the injectable FSH causes several follicles to develop at once, at approximately the same rate. The development is monitored with vaginal ultrasounds and following the patient’s levels of estradiol and progesterone. FSH brand names include Repronex, Follistim, Menopur, Gonal-F and Bravelle. The patient injects herself daily.
What happens during egg retrieval?
When the follicles have developed enough to be harvested, the patient attends an appointment where she is anesthetized and prepared for the procedure. Next, the doctor uses an ultrasound probe to guide a needle through the vaginal wall and into the follicle of the ovary. The thin needle draws the follicle fluid, which is then examined by an embryologist to find the eggs. The whole process takes about 20 minutes.
What happens to the eggs?
In the next step, the harvested eggs are then fertilized. If the sperm from the potential father, or in some cases, anonymous donor, has normal functionality, the eggs and sperm are placed together in a dish with a nutrient fluid, then incubated overnight to fertilize normally. If the sperm functionality is suboptimal, an embryologist uses Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection to inject a single sperm into a single egg with an extremely precise glass needle. Once fertilization is complete, the embryos are assessed and prepared to be transferred to the patient’s uterus.
How are the embryos transferred back to the uterus?
The doctor and the patient will discuss the number of embryos to be transferred. The number of successfully fertilized eggs usually determines the number of eggs to be placed in the uterus. Embryos are transferred to the uterus with transabdominal ultrasound guidance. This process does not require anesthesia, but it can cause minor cervical or uterine discomfort. Following transfer, the patient is advised to take at least one days bed rest and two or three additional days of rest, then 10 to 12 days later, two pregnancy tests are scheduled to confirm success. Once two positive tests are completed, an obstetrical ultrasound is ordered to show the sac, fetal pole, yolk sac and fetal heart rate.
Embryoscope©
Built into this technology there is a microscope with a powerful camera that allows the uninterrupted monitoring of the embryo during its first hours of life. In this way, we can keep a close eye on the embryo, from the moment when the oocyte is inseminated and begins to divide into smaller and smaller cells, until it can be transferred to the uterus.
