Jaw Augmentation

Steps Involved in IVF:

Procedure Description

Jaw augmentation, or mandibular augmentation, is a cosmetic surgery that enhances the size, shape, and overall structure of the jawline to create a more balanced and attractive facial profile. This procedure is popular among those who wish to achieve a stronger jawline, enhance facial symmetry, or restore jaw structure lost due to aging, trauma, or other conditions. Jaw augmentation can be performed using implants, injectable fillers, or through the surgical repositioning of jaw bones, depending on the patient’s needs and desired results.

Implants are one of the most common methods in jaw augmentation, typically made of biocompatible materials such as silicone or polyethylene. They are custom-fit to the individual’s facial anatomy, ensuring a natural-looking result. These implants are surgically inserted through small incisions made inside the mouth or under the chin. For a less invasive option, injectable fillers can temporarily enhance the jawline by adding volume and definition, though results typically last only a few months to a year. Surgical repositioning, or genioplasty, is another option in which the bone of the jaw is cut and repositioned to achieve a more desirable shape.

Each approach to jaw augmentation carries unique benefits and considerations, and the choice of technique depends on the patient’s goals, health status, and anatomical structure. Regardless of the chosen method, jaw augmentation requires a comprehensive evaluation by a skilled surgeon to ensure the desired results align with the patient’s facial proportions and aesthetic goals.

Procedure Duration

The duration of a jaw augmentation procedure can vary significantly based on the chosen technique and the complexity of the individual case. Surgical jaw augmentation with implants usually takes around 1-2 hours to complete. During this time, the surgeon makes incisions, inserts the implants, and carefully positions them to create a natural, well-balanced appearance. The procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation, depending on the patient's comfort level and the surgeon’s recommendations.

After the surgery, patients are usually monitored for a few hours before being allowed to leave. In cases involving injectable fillers, the procedure is significantly shorter, often lasting less than an hour, as it involves only localized injections without incisions. Recovery time is minimal with fillers, and patients can typically resume regular activities within a few days. However, fillers are temporary, so patients may need touch-up treatments every 6-12 months to maintain the desired appearance.

Recovery from surgical jaw augmentation is more involved. Initial swelling and bruising are common and may last for 1-2 weeks. Most patients can return to work within a week, but complete recovery and final results may take several months as the implants settle and swelling fully subsides. Patients are advised to follow specific post-operative care instructions, including dietary adjustments and avoiding strenuous activities, to promote optimal healing.

Benefits

  • Enhanced Facial Symmetry: Jaw augmentation helps balance facial proportions, creating a more harmonious and aesthetically pleasing appearance.
  • Stronger Jawline Definition: The procedure can add volume and structure to the jaw, enhancing the appearance of a well-defined jawline.
  • Restoration of Youthful Appearance: Jaw augmentation can restore a youthful contour to the face by correcting sagging or loss of volume in the jaw area.
  • Improved Self-Confidence: Many patients experience a boost in self-esteem and confidence due to the enhanced facial aesthetics achieved through jaw augmentation.
  • Permanent Results (with Implants): Unlike temporary fillers, implants provide long-lasting results, requiring no further procedures once they settle.

Risks & Considerations

  • Infection: Although rare, infections can occur, especially if post-operative care instructions are not followed. Patients should closely monitor any signs of infection and report them to their healthcare provider immediately.
  • Implant Shifting: In cases involving implants, there is a slight risk that the implants may shift over time, requiring additional surgery for correction.
  • Swelling and Bruising: These are common after jaw augmentation surgery and can take several weeks to fully subside, affecting the appearance and comfort of the patient during recovery.
  • Nerve Damage: There is a risk of temporary or, in rare cases, permanent nerve damage, which can lead to numbness or altered sensation in the lower face and jaw area.
  • Need for Future Adjustments: Injectable fillers require regular maintenance to retain results, while surgical implants, though generally permanent, may need adjustment in rare cases due to shifting or aging.

How to Choose the Right Doctor and Hospital

Selecting a qualified doctor and hospital for jaw augmentation is essential to achieve the best possible outcome. Patients should start by researching the surgeon’s credentials, ensuring they have specific expertise in facial augmentation and a strong track record of successful jaw procedures. Reading patient reviews and looking at before-and-after photos can provide insight into the surgeon's skills and aesthetic style.

Additionally, choosing a hospital or clinic with international accreditation can help ensure high standards of hygiene, safety, and patient care. It’s advisable to have a consultation with the surgeon to discuss goals, expectations, and any concerns about the procedure. A trustworthy and transparent provider will openly discuss the potential risks and considerations, making the patient feel comfortable and informed before moving forward.

Frequently Asked Questions

What actually happens during hyperstimulation of the ovaries?

The patient will take injectable FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) for eight to eleven days, depending on how long the follicles take to mature. This hormone is produced naturally in a woman’s body causing one egg to develop per cycle. Taking the injectable FSH causes several follicles to develop at once, at approximately the same rate. The development is monitored with vaginal ultrasounds and following the patient’s levels of estradiol and progesterone. FSH brand names include Repronex, Follistim, Menopur, Gonal-F and Bravelle. The patient injects herself daily.

What happens during egg retrieval?

When the follicles have developed enough to be harvested, the patient attends an appointment  where she is anesthetized and prepared for the procedure. Next, the doctor uses an ultrasound probe to guide a needle through the vaginal wall and into the follicle of the ovary. The thin needle draws the follicle fluid, which is then examined by an embryologist to find the eggs. The whole process takes about 20 minutes.

What happens to the eggs?

In the next step, the harvested eggs are then fertilized. If the sperm from the potential father, or in some cases, anonymous donor, has normal functionality, the eggs and sperm are placed together in a dish with a nutrient fluid, then incubated overnight to fertilize normally. If the sperm functionality is suboptimal, an embryologist uses Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection to inject a single sperm into a single egg with an extremely precise glass needle.  Once fertilization is complete, the embryos are assessed and prepared to be transferred to the patient’s uterus.

How are the embryos transferred back to the uterus?

The doctor and the patient will discuss the number of embryos to be transferred. The number of successfully fertilized eggs usually determines the number of eggs to be placed in the uterus. Embryos are transferred to the uterus with transabdominal ultrasound guidance. This process does not require anesthesia, but it can cause minor cervical or uterine discomfort. Following transfer, the patient is advised to take at least one days bed rest and two or three additional days of rest, then 10 to 12 days later, two pregnancy tests are scheduled to confirm success. Once two positive tests are completed, an obstetrical ultrasound is ordered to show the sac, fetal pole, yolk sac and fetal heart rate.

Embryoscope©

Built into this technology there is a microscope with a powerful camera that allows the uninterrupted monitoring of the embryo during its first hours of life. In this way, we can keep a close eye on the embryo, from the moment when the oocyte is inseminated and begins to divide into smaller and smaller cells, until it can be transferred to the uterus.
