Hip Joint
Steps Involved in IVF:
Procedure Description
The hip joint is one of the largest and most crucial joints in the body, responsible for supporting weight, ensuring balance, and allowing fluid motion in activities like walking, running, and sitting. Due to age, injury, or disease, the hip joint may suffer wear and tear, leading to pain, discomfort, and limited mobility. When conservative treatments such as physical therapy and medication fail to alleviate these symptoms, a hip joint procedure becomes necessary. The most common form is hip replacement surgery, also known as total hip arthroplasty.
In a hip replacement procedure, the damaged or worn-out parts of the hip joint are replaced with artificial components, known as prosthetics. These prosthetics typically consist of a socket (for the pelvis) and a ball (for the femoral head), which may be made of metal, plastic, or ceramic materials. The primary aim of the surgery is to relieve pain, restore function, and enhance the overall quality of life for individuals struggling with hip joint issues. For many, the surgery can significantly improve mobility and reduce or eliminate discomfort during day-to-day activities.
Another variant of the procedure is hip resurfacing. Unlike total hip replacement, hip resurfacing involves capping the head of the femur with a smooth metal covering, thereby preserving more bone. This approach is often recommended for younger, more active patients who wish to maintain greater mobility and may be at risk of needing a revision surgery later in life.
Procedure Duration
The length of a hip replacement surgery typically spans 1 to 3 hours, depending on the complexity and type of surgery being performed. During this period, patients are put under general or regional anesthesia to ensure comfort. Once the anesthesia takes effect, the surgeon makes an incision around the hip, removes the damaged parts, and replaces them with the prosthetic components. After the new joint is securely in place, the incision is closed, and the patient is moved to the recovery area.
The recovery phase varies for each individual but can generally take anywhere from several weeks to a few months. The initial postoperative stage focuses on managing pain, preventing complications like blood clots, and promoting early mobility. Patients are usually encouraged to stand and walk (with assistance) within a day or two after the surgery to prevent stiffness and maintain joint functionality.
Physical therapy plays a critical role in recovery, aiding in muscle strengthening, regaining balance, and gradually improving mobility. Most patients see substantial improvement within 3 to 6 weeks post-surgery, but complete recovery to resume all routine activities may take up to 3 months or longer. Long-term care often includes lifestyle modifications and ongoing exercises to ensure the longevity of the hip prosthesis and to promote overall joint health.

The country's healthcare system boasts highly trained surgeons and well-equipped hospitals, making it a favorable option for hip joint procedures with the added benefit of recovering in a tropical paradise.
Risks & Considerations
- Infection: Although rare, infection can occur in the surgical site or deep within the hip. Meticulous surgical practices and postoperative care significantly reduce this risk.
- Blood Clots: Patients undergoing hip surgery are at risk for blood clots, particularly in the legs. Preventive measures such as medications, compression devices, and early mobility are employed to minimize this risk.
- Prosthetic Wear & Tear: Over time, the artificial components of the hip may wear out or become loose, requiring revision surgery. Choosing the appropriate materials for the prosthetic and following post-surgery care can prolong the life of the joint.
- Dislocation: The artificial hip may dislocate if the ball slips out of the socket. Proper physical therapy, correct positioning, and adherence to post-surgical guidelines help mitigate this risk.
- Leg Length Discrepancy: In some cases, a hip replacement may result in a minor difference in leg lengths. Surgeons take measures to align the legs properly during surgery, but this discrepancy may be corrected with orthopedic footwear if it occurs.
How to Choose the Right Doctor and Hospital
Selecting the right healthcare provider for a hip joint procedure is crucial for ensuring optimal outcomes. Patients should prioritize board-certified orthopedic surgeons who specialize in hip replacements and have ample experience in performing these surgeries. Reviewing a surgeon's track record, understanding their approach to patient care, and considering their familiarity with advanced surgical techniques can significantly impact the success of the procedure.
When choosing a hospital, it is essential to look for facilities that offer state-of-the-art equipment, comprehensive rehabilitation programs, and international accreditations. Hospitals with dedicated orthopedic departments and a multidisciplinary team for patient care generally provide higher-quality treatment. Patient testimonials and reviews can provide insight into the hospital’s care quality, hygiene standards, and overall patient satisfaction.

Frequently Asked Questions
What actually happens during hyperstimulation of the ovaries?
The patient will take injectable FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) for eight to eleven days, depending on how long the follicles take to mature. This hormone is produced naturally in a woman’s body causing one egg to develop per cycle. Taking the injectable FSH causes several follicles to develop at once, at approximately the same rate. The development is monitored with vaginal ultrasounds and following the patient’s levels of estradiol and progesterone. FSH brand names include Repronex, Follistim, Menopur, Gonal-F and Bravelle. The patient injects herself daily.
What happens during egg retrieval?
When the follicles have developed enough to be harvested, the patient attends an appointment where she is anesthetized and prepared for the procedure. Next, the doctor uses an ultrasound probe to guide a needle through the vaginal wall and into the follicle of the ovary. The thin needle draws the follicle fluid, which is then examined by an embryologist to find the eggs. The whole process takes about 20 minutes.
What happens to the eggs?
In the next step, the harvested eggs are then fertilized. If the sperm from the potential father, or in some cases, anonymous donor, has normal functionality, the eggs and sperm are placed together in a dish with a nutrient fluid, then incubated overnight to fertilize normally. If the sperm functionality is suboptimal, an embryologist uses Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection to inject a single sperm into a single egg with an extremely precise glass needle. Once fertilization is complete, the embryos are assessed and prepared to be transferred to the patient’s uterus.
How are the embryos transferred back to the uterus?
The doctor and the patient will discuss the number of embryos to be transferred. The number of successfully fertilized eggs usually determines the number of eggs to be placed in the uterus. Embryos are transferred to the uterus with transabdominal ultrasound guidance. This process does not require anesthesia, but it can cause minor cervical or uterine discomfort. Following transfer, the patient is advised to take at least one days bed rest and two or three additional days of rest, then 10 to 12 days later, two pregnancy tests are scheduled to confirm success. Once two positive tests are completed, an obstetrical ultrasound is ordered to show the sac, fetal pole, yolk sac and fetal heart rate.
Embryoscope©
Built into this technology there is a microscope with a powerful camera that allows the uninterrupted monitoring of the embryo during its first hours of life. In this way, we can keep a close eye on the embryo, from the moment when the oocyte is inseminated and begins to divide into smaller and smaller cells, until it can be transferred to the uterus.
