FRAXEL

Steps Involved in IVF:

Procedure Description

Fraxel is a non-invasive laser skin treatment designed to improve skin texture, tone, and overall appearance by stimulating natural collagen production. Utilizing fractional laser technology, Fraxel targets only a fraction of the skin at a time, creating microscopic treatment zones that penetrate the skin's surface. This precision treatment removes damaged skin cells while stimulating new, healthy skin regeneration. Fraxel is known for addressing a variety of skin concerns, including fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage, acne scars, and pigmentation issues. Unlike traditional laser resurfacing, which removes the skin’s top layer entirely, Fraxel offers a more refined approach by treating small areas, minimizing downtime, and allowing the skin to heal more quickly.

Fraxel laser therapy works on both the epidermis and dermis (the skin's deeper layer), making it effective for achieving long-lasting improvements in skin tone and texture. Depending on the skin type and specific concerns, Fraxel can target deep wrinkles, improve skin elasticity, and reduce age spots. Because it employs a controlled injury process, the skin responds by creating new collagen and elastin, essential components in skin rejuvenation. Fraxel is an excellent choice for individuals looking for noticeable results without the intensity of more invasive procedures.

Several types of Fraxel lasers are available, each designed to address specific skin concerns. The two most common are Fraxel Dual, which combines two wavelengths to treat both superficial and deeper skin issues, and Fraxel Repair, a CO2 laser used for more intense treatments targeting deep wrinkles and scarring. Each treatment type can be customized according to the patient's skin goals, making Fraxel an adaptable choice for various skin conditions.

Procedure Duration

Fraxel treatments are typically performed in a dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon’s office and generally take between 20 to 45 minutes, depending on the size and condition of the area being treated. The procedure usually begins with a consultation, where the professional assesses the patient's skin type and goals. During the procedure itself, the patient may receive a topical anesthetic cream to minimize discomfort, as Fraxel lasers can create a warm or tingling sensation during treatment.

Most patients require a series of Fraxel sessions to achieve optimal results, typically spaced about four to six weeks apart. The number of sessions varies based on the skin concern and the type of Fraxel laser used. While some patients notice visible results after the first session, the full benefits typically appear over time as the skin heals and generates new collagen.

Recovery after Fraxel is relatively short compared to other laser procedures. Patients can expect redness and mild swelling, which generally subsides within a few days. Some individuals may experience peeling or flaking as the treated skin cells are replaced by new, healthy skin. Patients are advised to avoid sun exposure during recovery and apply a gentle moisturizer to maintain hydration. Most people find they can resume regular activities within a day or two, making Fraxel a convenient choice for individuals with busy schedules.

Benefits

  • Improved Skin Texture: Fraxel effectively smooths the skin’s surface, reducing roughness and creating a more even texture.
  • Reduced Wrinkles and Fine Lines: By stimulating collagen, Fraxel can reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, resulting in younger-looking skin.
  • Diminished Acne Scars: Fraxel’s precision technology can target scarred areas, gradually breaking down scar tissue and encouraging new skin to replace damaged areas.
  • Even Skin Tone: Fraxel can lighten areas of hyperpigmentation, such as age spots and sun damage, restoring an even, radiant skin tone.
  • Minimal Downtime: With less impact on surrounding skin, Fraxel offers quicker recovery than many other laser treatments, allowing patients to return to daily activities sooner.

Risks & Considerations

  • Skin Redness and Swelling: Temporary redness and swelling are common post-procedure, especially for individuals with sensitive skin.
  • Hyperpigmentation: Some individuals may experience changes in skin pigmentation, particularly those with darker skin tones, making it crucial to consult a knowledgeable provider.
  • Scarring: Although rare, improper handling of the laser or inadequate post-treatment care may increase the risk of scarring.
  • Infection: As with any skin procedure, there’s a small risk of infection, particularly if the treated area isn’t cared for properly after the procedure.
  • Sensitivity to Sun: Treated skin becomes more sensitive to sun exposure, requiring diligent sun protection to prevent further pigmentation and ensure optimal healing.

How to Choose the Right Doctor and Hospital

Selecting a qualified provider for Fraxel treatment is critical to achieving safe and effective results. It’s essential to choose a board-certified dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon experienced in Fraxel laser technology. Asking about the provider's experience with Fraxel specifically can give insight into their proficiency with this specialized treatment.

The hospital or clinic should also meet high safety standards, ideally with international accreditation and a solid reputation in dermatological or aesthetic care. Prioritize facilities with transparent policies on patient safety and hygiene, as well as positive reviews from past patients.

Frequently Asked Questions

What actually happens during hyperstimulation of the ovaries?

The patient will take injectable FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) for eight to eleven days, depending on how long the follicles take to mature. This hormone is produced naturally in a woman’s body causing one egg to develop per cycle. Taking the injectable FSH causes several follicles to develop at once, at approximately the same rate. The development is monitored with vaginal ultrasounds and following the patient’s levels of estradiol and progesterone. FSH brand names include Repronex, Follistim, Menopur, Gonal-F and Bravelle. The patient injects herself daily.

What happens during egg retrieval?

When the follicles have developed enough to be harvested, the patient attends an appointment  where she is anesthetized and prepared for the procedure. Next, the doctor uses an ultrasound probe to guide a needle through the vaginal wall and into the follicle of the ovary. The thin needle draws the follicle fluid, which is then examined by an embryologist to find the eggs. The whole process takes about 20 minutes.

What happens to the eggs?

In the next step, the harvested eggs are then fertilized. If the sperm from the potential father, or in some cases, anonymous donor, has normal functionality, the eggs and sperm are placed together in a dish with a nutrient fluid, then incubated overnight to fertilize normally. If the sperm functionality is suboptimal, an embryologist uses Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection to inject a single sperm into a single egg with an extremely precise glass needle.  Once fertilization is complete, the embryos are assessed and prepared to be transferred to the patient’s uterus.

How are the embryos transferred back to the uterus?

The doctor and the patient will discuss the number of embryos to be transferred. The number of successfully fertilized eggs usually determines the number of eggs to be placed in the uterus. Embryos are transferred to the uterus with transabdominal ultrasound guidance. This process does not require anesthesia, but it can cause minor cervical or uterine discomfort. Following transfer, the patient is advised to take at least one days bed rest and two or three additional days of rest, then 10 to 12 days later, two pregnancy tests are scheduled to confirm success. Once two positive tests are completed, an obstetrical ultrasound is ordered to show the sac, fetal pole, yolk sac and fetal heart rate.

Embryoscope©

Built into this technology there is a microscope with a powerful camera that allows the uninterrupted monitoring of the embryo during its first hours of life. In this way, we can keep a close eye on the embryo, from the moment when the oocyte is inseminated and begins to divide into smaller and smaller cells, until it can be transferred to the uterus.
