Female Check Up (Below the Age of 40)

Steps Involved in IVF:

Procedure Description

Regular health check-ups are essential for women under 40 to proactively monitor their overall health and detect potential issues early. While specific medical needs vary based on personal and family history, a typical female check-up includes screenings and assessments tailored to younger women’s unique health concerns. A well-rounded check-up may assess reproductive health, general wellness, mental health, and lifestyle factors.

A female check-up often starts with a thorough consultation where a healthcare professional will review personal medical history, family history, lifestyle, and any symptoms or concerns. Physical exams generally follow, including basic assessments of height, weight, blood pressure, and body mass index (BMI). Reproductive health screenings, such as a pelvic exam and Pap smear, may be conducted to check for abnormalities or early signs of cervical cancer. Other standard assessments may include a breast exam and a thyroid evaluation, as thyroid issues are more prevalent among women under 40.

Blood tests are a common component of these check-ups, providing essential information about cholesterol levels, blood sugar, and hormone levels. Depending on individual needs, healthcare providers may also include screenings for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), vitamin deficiencies, and metabolic health. Each test helps build a complete picture of a woman’s current health status, offering the opportunity to make lifestyle or dietary adjustments as necessary.

Procedure Duration

The duration of a female check-up can vary, typically ranging from one to three hours, depending on the tests involved and the complexity of individual cases. Generally, the initial consultation and physical exams are completed within 30 to 45 minutes, during which the healthcare provider gathers information and performs basic examinations.

Blood tests and other laboratory screenings usually follow, often taking another 15 to 30 minutes. Some test results, such as those for cholesterol, blood sugar, and hormone levels, may take longer to process, with final results typically available within a few days. Diagnostic imaging, if required, such as ultrasound or breast imaging, can extend the check-up to about three hours.

After all screenings are complete, many healthcare providers recommend a follow-up appointment to discuss results and recommended lifestyle changes or treatments. This follow-up can take place in person or via telemedicine, lasting around 15 to 30 minutes. Recovery time is generally not necessary for a routine check-up, though patients may experience mild discomfort following certain tests, such as a Pap smear or blood draw.

Risks & Considerations

  • Discomfort from Tests: Some tests, such as pelvic exams or Pap smears, can be mildly uncomfortable. It’s important to communicate with the healthcare provider to ensure a smooth experience.
  • Risk of Overdiagnosis: In some cases, screenings may detect abnormalities that would not necessarily develop into significant health issues. Patients should understand their results and consult professionals to avoid unnecessary treatments.
  • False Positives or Negatives: Screening tests can sometimes yield inaccurate results. A second opinion or follow-up test can clarify findings and reduce anxiety.
  • Exposure to Medical Radiation: Certain diagnostic procedures, such as mammograms, involve minimal radiation exposure. While generally safe, patients with concerns should consult their doctor.
  • Privacy and Confidentiality: Ensuring privacy during health check-ups is critical, especially for international patients. Choose a provider that guarantees confidentiality in medical records and personal information.

How to Choose the Right Doctor and Hospital

When selecting a doctor or hospital for a female check-up, it is essential to research thoroughly. Start by reviewing the qualifications of healthcare providers and ensuring they are certified in preventive medicine or women's health. Many hospitals have specific departments dedicated to female health, so looking for specialists in these areas can be beneficial.

Consider the hospital’s reputation in handling international patients, as facilities experienced with medical tourists are often better equipped for language support, privacy, and confidentiality. Reviews from other patients can offer insights into the quality of care, professionalism, and comfort levels provided. Ultimately, choosing a doctor and hospital with a focus on preventive care and experience in dealing with international patients will ensure a smooth, comprehensive check-up experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

What actually happens during hyperstimulation of the ovaries?

The patient will take injectable FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) for eight to eleven days, depending on how long the follicles take to mature. This hormone is produced naturally in a woman’s body causing one egg to develop per cycle. Taking the injectable FSH causes several follicles to develop at once, at approximately the same rate. The development is monitored with vaginal ultrasounds and following the patient’s levels of estradiol and progesterone. FSH brand names include Repronex, Follistim, Menopur, Gonal-F and Bravelle. The patient injects herself daily.

What happens during egg retrieval?

When the follicles have developed enough to be harvested, the patient attends an appointment  where she is anesthetized and prepared for the procedure. Next, the doctor uses an ultrasound probe to guide a needle through the vaginal wall and into the follicle of the ovary. The thin needle draws the follicle fluid, which is then examined by an embryologist to find the eggs. The whole process takes about 20 minutes.

What happens to the eggs?

In the next step, the harvested eggs are then fertilized. If the sperm from the potential father, or in some cases, anonymous donor, has normal functionality, the eggs and sperm are placed together in a dish with a nutrient fluid, then incubated overnight to fertilize normally. If the sperm functionality is suboptimal, an embryologist uses Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection to inject a single sperm into a single egg with an extremely precise glass needle.  Once fertilization is complete, the embryos are assessed and prepared to be transferred to the patient’s uterus.

How are the embryos transferred back to the uterus?

The doctor and the patient will discuss the number of embryos to be transferred. The number of successfully fertilized eggs usually determines the number of eggs to be placed in the uterus. Embryos are transferred to the uterus with transabdominal ultrasound guidance. This process does not require anesthesia, but it can cause minor cervical or uterine discomfort. Following transfer, the patient is advised to take at least one days bed rest and two or three additional days of rest, then 10 to 12 days later, two pregnancy tests are scheduled to confirm success. Once two positive tests are completed, an obstetrical ultrasound is ordered to show the sac, fetal pole, yolk sac and fetal heart rate.

Embryoscope©

Built into this technology there is a microscope with a powerful camera that allows the uninterrupted monitoring of the embryo during its first hours of life. In this way, we can keep a close eye on the embryo, from the moment when the oocyte is inseminated and begins to divide into smaller and smaller cells, until it can be transferred to the uterus.
