Female Check Up (Above the Age of 40)
Steps Involved in IVF:
Procedure Description
A female check-up for women above the age of 40 is a comprehensive health screening that evaluates various aspects of a woman’s physical and mental health. This check-up generally includes a wide range of screenings that cater to the unique health concerns of women in this age group, addressing issues such as cardiovascular health, reproductive health, bone density, and cancer screenings. These screenings help in the early detection of potential health risks, allowing for timely intervention and preventive care, which can significantly improve quality of life and long-term health outcomes.
One of the central aspects of a female check-up includes screenings for cardiovascular health. Cardiovascular diseases are one of the leading causes of health complications and mortality among women over 40. Regular screenings, including cholesterol checks, blood pressure assessments, and in some cases, electrocardiograms, can be essential for monitoring heart health. Early detection and management of risk factors like hypertension and high cholesterol levels are crucial for reducing the risk of heart-related complications.
Reproductive health evaluations also form a vital part of the check-up process. Tests like Pap smears, mammograms, and pelvic ultrasounds help in detecting early signs of cancers (e.g., breast, cervical, ovarian) or other issues like uterine fibroids. These screenings are particularly relevant as hormonal changes occur during perimenopause and menopause. Such changes can lead to varying health concerns, including increased cancer risks, osteoporosis, and cardiovascular issues. A holistic female check-up provides women with a tailored approach to health, catering to these unique challenges.
Procedure Duration
The duration of a comprehensive female check-up can vary based on the range of tests involved and the individual’s health profile. Generally, the entire check-up may take between one to two days. The initial phase typically includes consultation with a healthcare provider to review medical history, lifestyle, and any symptoms or health concerns. This consultation sets the foundation for the specific tests that will follow, which may include blood tests, imaging scans, and physical examinations.
Following the initial consultation, patients undergo a series of diagnostic tests. Blood tests are commonly conducted to assess cholesterol levels, blood sugar, and other key biomarkers. Imaging tests, like mammograms or ultrasounds, can be scheduled as per the physician’s recommendations, taking approximately 30 minutes each. Other examinations, such as bone density scans, add another 15 to 20 minutes. The comprehensive nature of this check-up requires multiple appointments, each taking a short duration but cumulatively adding up to about one full day of evaluations.
After all tests are completed, a follow-up appointment is usually scheduled within a few days. During this consultation, the healthcare provider discusses the results and recommends any necessary treatments or lifestyle changes. This post-check-up consultation helps clarify results and provides a roadmap for ongoing health maintenance. Recovery time after the check-up is minimal, though some patients may experience mild discomfort from certain tests like mammograms or blood draws. Rest and hydration are generally recommended post-appointment to support quick recovery.

Risks & Considerations
- False Positives or Negatives: Screening tests may sometimes yield inaccurate results, leading to unnecessary stress or delayed intervention.
- Cost Variability: Prices for female check-ups can vary widely between destinations; it’s crucial to understand the full cost upfront.
- Language Barriers: In some destinations, there may be language challenges; choosing facilities with English-speaking staff can mitigate this issue.
- Radiation Exposure: Imaging tests like mammograms expose patients to minimal radiation; while generally safe, it’s important to monitor cumulative exposure over time.
- Cultural Sensitivity: Some destinations may have different cultural approaches to medical care, impacting the comfort level and experience for foreign patients.
How to Choose the Right Doctor and Hospital
When selecting a doctor and hospital for a female check-up abroad, thorough research is essential. Look for facilities that are internationally accredited, as this often signifies adherence to global health and safety standards. Accredited hospitals and clinics are more likely to have high standards of care, skilled practitioners, and reliable diagnostic technology, ensuring a safer experience for international patients.
Additionally, consider patient reviews and testimonials, which can provide insight into the experiences of other international patients. Language support, personalized care, and transparent pricing are also important factors in making a well-informed choice. Working with a reliable medical tourism facilitator, if necessary, can also simplify logistics and help secure appointments with reputable healthcare providers.

Frequently Asked Questions
What actually happens during hyperstimulation of the ovaries?
The patient will take injectable FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) for eight to eleven days, depending on how long the follicles take to mature. This hormone is produced naturally in a woman’s body causing one egg to develop per cycle. Taking the injectable FSH causes several follicles to develop at once, at approximately the same rate. The development is monitored with vaginal ultrasounds and following the patient’s levels of estradiol and progesterone. FSH brand names include Repronex, Follistim, Menopur, Gonal-F and Bravelle. The patient injects herself daily.
What happens during egg retrieval?
When the follicles have developed enough to be harvested, the patient attends an appointment where she is anesthetized and prepared for the procedure. Next, the doctor uses an ultrasound probe to guide a needle through the vaginal wall and into the follicle of the ovary. The thin needle draws the follicle fluid, which is then examined by an embryologist to find the eggs. The whole process takes about 20 minutes.
What happens to the eggs?
In the next step, the harvested eggs are then fertilized. If the sperm from the potential father, or in some cases, anonymous donor, has normal functionality, the eggs and sperm are placed together in a dish with a nutrient fluid, then incubated overnight to fertilize normally. If the sperm functionality is suboptimal, an embryologist uses Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection to inject a single sperm into a single egg with an extremely precise glass needle. Once fertilization is complete, the embryos are assessed and prepared to be transferred to the patient’s uterus.
How are the embryos transferred back to the uterus?
The doctor and the patient will discuss the number of embryos to be transferred. The number of successfully fertilized eggs usually determines the number of eggs to be placed in the uterus. Embryos are transferred to the uterus with transabdominal ultrasound guidance. This process does not require anesthesia, but it can cause minor cervical or uterine discomfort. Following transfer, the patient is advised to take at least one days bed rest and two or three additional days of rest, then 10 to 12 days later, two pregnancy tests are scheduled to confirm success. Once two positive tests are completed, an obstetrical ultrasound is ordered to show the sac, fetal pole, yolk sac and fetal heart rate.
Embryoscope©
Built into this technology there is a microscope with a powerful camera that allows the uninterrupted monitoring of the embryo during its first hours of life. In this way, we can keep a close eye on the embryo, from the moment when the oocyte is inseminated and begins to divide into smaller and smaller cells, until it can be transferred to the uterus.
