Facial Prosthesis

Steps Involved in IVF:

Procedure Description

Facial prosthesis involves the design and implementation of customized artificial facial components to replace or enhance missing or malformed facial structures. This procedure can serve both functional and aesthetic purposes, providing individuals who have lost facial features due to trauma, disease, or congenital deformities a way to restore facial symmetry and improve overall quality of life. Advances in materials and digital technology now allow for more precise, realistic, and comfortable prosthetics that blend seamlessly with existing facial structures.

Typically, a prosthetic is made using a silicone-based material that closely mimics the color, texture, and elasticity of human skin. Facial prosthetics may include noses, ears, eyes, or large sections of the face. Prosthetics are custom-designed through a process of digital scanning and casting to ensure a perfect fit. Each component is crafted to match the individual’s natural appearance, allowing for a more lifelike and discreet result. Customization may also include color-matching techniques to blend seamlessly with the patient’s skin tone, further enhancing the prosthetic's natural appearance.

During the initial stages, the prosthetist and patient collaborate to design and refine the shape, color, and material of the prosthetic device. In some cases, facial prostheses can be attached using magnets, adhesives, or implants, depending on the patient's unique needs and the area being restored. Although it doesn’t restore biological functions like breathing or chewing, a well-crafted prosthesis can significantly boost a patient's confidence and provide a sense of normalcy, especially for individuals who may have experienced emotional trauma related to facial disfigurement.

Procedure Duration

The process of obtaining a facial prosthesis usually involves multiple appointments and phases over several weeks to a few months, depending on the complexity of the case. The initial phase focuses on assessment and planning, where doctors and prosthetists evaluate the area requiring the prosthesis, discuss the patient’s goals, and finalize the design specifications. Digital imaging or manual molds are then taken to ensure precise measurements for custom-fabrication of the prosthesis.

Once the design phase is complete, the fabrication process can take several weeks as it involves detailed craftsmanship, color-matching, and adjustments. During this time, the prosthetist will refine the details of the prosthetic, ensuring it is both visually realistic and physically comfortable for the wearer. The patient may need to return for multiple fittings, where further adjustments can be made to ensure a secure fit and minimize any visible transitions between the prosthesis and the surrounding skin.

The final fitting and attachment phase allows the patient to try the prosthesis, receive instruction on care, and practice attachment methods if using adhesives or magnets. Recovery time is generally minimal; however, patients often require a few days to adjust to the feeling of wearing a prosthesis. Some individuals may also work with a mental health professional to help adapt to the new appearance, which can be an emotional process.

Risks & Considerations

  • Allergic Reactions: Some individuals may experience allergic reactions to the materials used in the prosthesis, requiring testing and material adjustments.
  • Infection Risks: For prostheses attached via implants, there’s a risk of infection at the implant site, which requires proper hygiene and follow-up care.
  • Adhesion Challenges: Certain attachment methods, such as adhesives, may not work well for everyone and can cause irritation or discomfort over time.
  • Durability Issues: While prostheses are designed to be durable, they may need periodic replacement due to wear and tear, especially with regular use.
  • Psychological Adaptation: Adjusting to a facial prosthesis can be challenging emotionally, and patients may need counseling support to adapt to their new appearance.

How to Choose the Right Doctor and Hospital

When seeking a facial prosthesis specialist, selecting a qualified, experienced professional and a reputable hospital is paramount. Look for a prosthetist or reconstructive specialist with extensive experience in facial prosthetics, verified certifications, and a solid reputation in reconstructive surgery. It’s advisable to seek out professionals who utilize the latest digital imaging and fabrication technologies, ensuring a precise fit and optimal aesthetics.

Additionally, the hospital or clinic should have a proven track record in medical tourism and offer tailored care for international patients, including language support and cultural sensitivity. Confirm that the facility follows rigorous hygiene and quality control standards, especially if implants are required for attachment. Checking patient reviews and third-party testimonials can also provide insight into the quality of care and patient satisfaction.

Frequently Asked Questions

What actually happens during hyperstimulation of the ovaries?

The patient will take injectable FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) for eight to eleven days, depending on how long the follicles take to mature. This hormone is produced naturally in a woman’s body causing one egg to develop per cycle. Taking the injectable FSH causes several follicles to develop at once, at approximately the same rate. The development is monitored with vaginal ultrasounds and following the patient’s levels of estradiol and progesterone. FSH brand names include Repronex, Follistim, Menopur, Gonal-F and Bravelle. The patient injects herself daily.

What happens during egg retrieval?

When the follicles have developed enough to be harvested, the patient attends an appointment  where she is anesthetized and prepared for the procedure. Next, the doctor uses an ultrasound probe to guide a needle through the vaginal wall and into the follicle of the ovary. The thin needle draws the follicle fluid, which is then examined by an embryologist to find the eggs. The whole process takes about 20 minutes.

What happens to the eggs?

In the next step, the harvested eggs are then fertilized. If the sperm from the potential father, or in some cases, anonymous donor, has normal functionality, the eggs and sperm are placed together in a dish with a nutrient fluid, then incubated overnight to fertilize normally. If the sperm functionality is suboptimal, an embryologist uses Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection to inject a single sperm into a single egg with an extremely precise glass needle.  Once fertilization is complete, the embryos are assessed and prepared to be transferred to the patient’s uterus.

How are the embryos transferred back to the uterus?

The doctor and the patient will discuss the number of embryos to be transferred. The number of successfully fertilized eggs usually determines the number of eggs to be placed in the uterus. Embryos are transferred to the uterus with transabdominal ultrasound guidance. This process does not require anesthesia, but it can cause minor cervical or uterine discomfort. Following transfer, the patient is advised to take at least one days bed rest and two or three additional days of rest, then 10 to 12 days later, two pregnancy tests are scheduled to confirm success. Once two positive tests are completed, an obstetrical ultrasound is ordered to show the sac, fetal pole, yolk sac and fetal heart rate.

Embryoscope©

Built into this technology there is a microscope with a powerful camera that allows the uninterrupted monitoring of the embryo during its first hours of life. In this way, we can keep a close eye on the embryo, from the moment when the oocyte is inseminated and begins to divide into smaller and smaller cells, until it can be transferred to the uterus.
