Eye Lid Lift - Blepharoplasty
Steps Involved in IVF:
Procedure Description
Blepharoplasty, commonly known as eyelid lift surgery, is a procedure aimed at correcting drooping or puffy eyelids to rejuvenate the area around the eyes. The surgery can be performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both, depending on the patient's needs and cosmetic goals. This procedure is popular among individuals seeking to reduce signs of aging, as it can effectively address excess skin, fat deposits, and fine lines, giving the face a refreshed and youthful appearance.
Upper eyelid blepharoplasty involves the removal of excess skin and fatty tissue from the upper eyelids. This can help reduce the appearance of hooded or sagging eyelids that may obscure vision or create a tired look. Lower eyelid blepharoplasty, on the other hand, targets bags under the eyes, puffiness, and dark circles by addressing the fat and skin that contribute to these issues. The results can provide a natural-looking lift, enhancing the eyes without changing their overall shape.
In many cases, blepharoplasty is combined with other facial procedures, such as a brow lift or face lift, to achieve a balanced and harmonious result. While primarily considered a cosmetic surgery, blepharoplasty can also have functional benefits, especially for patients whose sagging upper eyelids impair their field of vision. It is a highly customizable procedure tailored to the unique anatomy and aesthetic goals of each patient.
Procedure Duration
The duration of blepharoplasty varies based on the extent of the procedure. Typically, the surgery can take anywhere from 1 to 3 hours to complete, depending on whether it involves both the upper and lower eyelids or just one area. For patients undergoing the surgery on the upper eyelids only, the procedure may take less than an hour. However, when both the upper and lower lids are treated, the procedure time increases proportionally.
Following the surgery, patients are generally monitored in a recovery area for a short period, as blepharoplasty is usually performed on an outpatient basis. While anesthesia choices may vary, local anesthesia with sedation is common, allowing the patient to remain comfortable but conscious. General anesthesia is also an option if the patient prefers to be fully unconscious during the procedure. In either case, the use of minimally invasive techniques allows for quicker procedures with minimal disruption to surrounding tissues.
The initial recovery phase lasts about one to two weeks, during which patients may experience swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort around the eyes. Stitches are usually removed within the first week, and most patients can resume daily activities after about 10 to 14 days. Complete recovery, where all swelling and bruising have resolved, may take several months. It’s important for patients to follow all aftercare instructions carefully, including avoiding strenuous activities, to ensure optimal healing.
Benefits of Eyelid Lift Surgery
- Improved Vision: For individuals whose upper eyelids impair their field of vision, blepharoplasty can restore a clear line of sight.
- Youthful Appearance: By removing excess skin and fat, the procedure provides a more youthful, refreshed look around the eyes.
- Minimal Scarring: The incisions for blepharoplasty are typically hidden within natural folds or along the lash line, resulting in subtle, nearly invisible scarring.
- Enhanced Confidence: The procedure can have a positive impact on self-confidence by addressing prominent signs of aging or tiredness.
- Long-lasting Results: The effects of blepharoplasty are often long-lasting, with results maintaining for up to a decade or more, depending on factors like skin elasticity and lifestyle.

Risks & Considerations
- Infection: While rare, there is a risk of infection post-surgery. Adhering to aftercare guidelines and maintaining good hygiene can help mitigate this risk.
- Asymmetry: Minor differences in eyelid appearance can sometimes result, though experienced surgeons work meticulously to ensure balance and symmetry.
- Scarring: Although incisions are hidden, there is a small chance of visible scarring. Proper aftercare and the use of scar treatments can minimize this issue.
- Dry Eyes: Some patients may experience dry eyes temporarily after surgery. This can usually be managed with eye drops and resolves as healing progresses.
- Bleeding and Bruising: Some level of bruising and swelling is expected post-surgery, but in rare cases, excessive bleeding may occur. Patients are advised to follow all pre-operative instructions to reduce this risk.
How to Choose the Right Doctor and Hospital
When considering blepharoplasty, selecting a qualified surgeon and hospital is crucial to achieving safe and satisfying results. Look for a board-certified plastic surgeon with extensive experience in blepharoplasty. Review their portfolio to understand their aesthetic style and approach, ensuring it aligns with your goals. Additionally, seek a surgeon with a strong track record in facial cosmetic surgery to maximize the likelihood of a balanced and natural outcome.
The choice of hospital or clinic also plays an important role. Ensure the facility is accredited, equipped with advanced technology, and follows stringent safety protocols. Consider hospitals known for comprehensive aftercare services, as blepharoplasty recovery requires diligent follow-up. Lastly, communication with the surgical team should be transparent and informative, allowing you to fully understand the procedure, risks, and recovery expectations.

Frequently Asked Questions
What actually happens during hyperstimulation of the ovaries?
The patient will take injectable FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) for eight to eleven days, depending on how long the follicles take to mature. This hormone is produced naturally in a woman’s body causing one egg to develop per cycle. Taking the injectable FSH causes several follicles to develop at once, at approximately the same rate. The development is monitored with vaginal ultrasounds and following the patient’s levels of estradiol and progesterone. FSH brand names include Repronex, Follistim, Menopur, Gonal-F and Bravelle. The patient injects herself daily.
What happens during egg retrieval?
When the follicles have developed enough to be harvested, the patient attends an appointment where she is anesthetized and prepared for the procedure. Next, the doctor uses an ultrasound probe to guide a needle through the vaginal wall and into the follicle of the ovary. The thin needle draws the follicle fluid, which is then examined by an embryologist to find the eggs. The whole process takes about 20 minutes.
What happens to the eggs?
In the next step, the harvested eggs are then fertilized. If the sperm from the potential father, or in some cases, anonymous donor, has normal functionality, the eggs and sperm are placed together in a dish with a nutrient fluid, then incubated overnight to fertilize normally. If the sperm functionality is suboptimal, an embryologist uses Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection to inject a single sperm into a single egg with an extremely precise glass needle. Once fertilization is complete, the embryos are assessed and prepared to be transferred to the patient’s uterus.
How are the embryos transferred back to the uterus?
The doctor and the patient will discuss the number of embryos to be transferred. The number of successfully fertilized eggs usually determines the number of eggs to be placed in the uterus. Embryos are transferred to the uterus with transabdominal ultrasound guidance. This process does not require anesthesia, but it can cause minor cervical or uterine discomfort. Following transfer, the patient is advised to take at least one days bed rest and two or three additional days of rest, then 10 to 12 days later, two pregnancy tests are scheduled to confirm success. Once two positive tests are completed, an obstetrical ultrasound is ordered to show the sac, fetal pole, yolk sac and fetal heart rate.
Embryoscope©
Built into this technology there is a microscope with a powerful camera that allows the uninterrupted monitoring of the embryo during its first hours of life. In this way, we can keep a close eye on the embryo, from the moment when the oocyte is inseminated and begins to divide into smaller and smaller cells, until it can be transferred to the uterus.
