Ergotherapy
Steps Involved in IVF:
Procedure Description
Ergotherapy, commonly known as occupational therapy, is a holistic approach to rehabilitation that focuses on enabling individuals to lead more independent, productive, and satisfying lives. This therapeutic intervention centers around using meaningful activities to support individuals with physical, mental, or social disabilities. Ergotherapists assess patients’ needs, abilities, and limitations to create personalized plans that help them regain or improve functional abilities essential for daily living, work, and leisure.
The primary goal of ergotherapy is to enhance the overall quality of life by restoring and promoting skills that allow patients to manage daily tasks. Whether it’s helping a stroke survivor regain the ability to dress independently or assisting someone with anxiety to navigate social interactions more confidently, ergotherapy uses activity as a means to achieve therapeutic goals. These activities may include basic daily tasks such as cooking and dressing, as well as more complex tasks like work-related functions or community participation.
Ergotherapists work closely with their patients to address their unique needs. The therapy is rooted in understanding the patient's environment, lifestyle, and desired outcomes, integrating exercises, task training, and adaptive techniques. Unlike other forms of therapy that focus purely on physical rehabilitation, ergotherapy combines physical, mental, and social aspects, allowing individuals to lead more balanced and self-sufficient lives.
Procedure Duration
The duration and structure of ergotherapy can vary significantly depending on the individual's condition, goals, and the complexity of their rehabilitation needs. Typically, an initial evaluation session is conducted, lasting about 60 to 90 minutes, during which the therapist assesses the patient's needs, challenges, and potential areas for improvement. This initial phase sets the foundation for a tailored treatment plan that aligns with the individual's goals, whether they aim to regain certain motor skills, improve cognitive functioning, or enhance social interaction.
Ergotherapy sessions usually range between 30 to 60 minutes and are scheduled once or multiple times per week based on the treatment plan. Short-term therapy may last for a few weeks to a couple of months, whereas long-term therapy can extend to six months or longer, particularly for chronic conditions or extensive rehabilitation needs. Each session encompasses activities designed to improve fine and gross motor skills, cognitive abilities, and sensory processing, along with self-care strategies.
Recovery time is highly individualized. While some patients may see noticeable improvements within a few sessions, others might require a more extended period to develop skills and adapt to new ways of functioning. Consistent participation and active engagement in therapy are crucial to maximizing outcomes and fostering the skills necessary for independent living.

- Mental and Emotional Stress: Adapting to new ways of functioning can be emotionally taxing, especially for those who struggle with the adjustment to lifestyle changes or limitations.
- Risk of Injury: There is a slight possibility of injury during therapeutic activities, especially if tasks are too challenging or not appropriately adapted to the individual’s ability level.
- Inconsistent Progress: Progress in ergotherapy can vary from person to person, with some experiencing slower improvement or plateaus in their rehabilitation journey.
- Time Commitment and Consistency: Effective ergotherapy requires a significant time commitment and consistent participation, which might be challenging for individuals balancing work, family, or financial constraints.
How to Choose the Right Doctor and Hospital
When seeking ergotherapy, it is essential to choose a qualified and experienced therapist who understands the individual’s unique needs and goals. Start by researching therapists who are certified and licensed in occupational therapy. Check for practitioners with extensive experience in the specific type of rehabilitation you require, as well as familiarity with your condition or injury. Additionally, reading patient reviews and testimonials can provide insights into the therapist's approach and the effectiveness of their treatments.
In selecting the right hospital or rehabilitation center, consider facilities that offer a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to care, including access to a variety of therapeutic resources and specialists. Look for centers with modern equipment, evidence-based treatment approaches, and flexible therapy plans that accommodate your schedule and lifestyle. Accessibility and communication are also critical—choose a center where staff are approachable, responsive, and supportive of your overall rehabilitation journey.

Frequently Asked Questions
What actually happens during hyperstimulation of the ovaries?
The patient will take injectable FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) for eight to eleven days, depending on how long the follicles take to mature. This hormone is produced naturally in a woman’s body causing one egg to develop per cycle. Taking the injectable FSH causes several follicles to develop at once, at approximately the same rate. The development is monitored with vaginal ultrasounds and following the patient’s levels of estradiol and progesterone. FSH brand names include Repronex, Follistim, Menopur, Gonal-F and Bravelle. The patient injects herself daily.
What happens during egg retrieval?
When the follicles have developed enough to be harvested, the patient attends an appointment where she is anesthetized and prepared for the procedure. Next, the doctor uses an ultrasound probe to guide a needle through the vaginal wall and into the follicle of the ovary. The thin needle draws the follicle fluid, which is then examined by an embryologist to find the eggs. The whole process takes about 20 minutes.
What happens to the eggs?
In the next step, the harvested eggs are then fertilized. If the sperm from the potential father, or in some cases, anonymous donor, has normal functionality, the eggs and sperm are placed together in a dish with a nutrient fluid, then incubated overnight to fertilize normally. If the sperm functionality is suboptimal, an embryologist uses Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection to inject a single sperm into a single egg with an extremely precise glass needle. Once fertilization is complete, the embryos are assessed and prepared to be transferred to the patient’s uterus.
How are the embryos transferred back to the uterus?
The doctor and the patient will discuss the number of embryos to be transferred. The number of successfully fertilized eggs usually determines the number of eggs to be placed in the uterus. Embryos are transferred to the uterus with transabdominal ultrasound guidance. This process does not require anesthesia, but it can cause minor cervical or uterine discomfort. Following transfer, the patient is advised to take at least one days bed rest and two or three additional days of rest, then 10 to 12 days later, two pregnancy tests are scheduled to confirm success. Once two positive tests are completed, an obstetrical ultrasound is ordered to show the sac, fetal pole, yolk sac and fetal heart rate.
Embryoscope©
Built into this technology there is a microscope with a powerful camera that allows the uninterrupted monitoring of the embryo during its first hours of life. In this way, we can keep a close eye on the embryo, from the moment when the oocyte is inseminated and begins to divide into smaller and smaller cells, until it can be transferred to the uterus.
