Crowns and Bridges – Metal (Per Tooth)

Steps Involved in IVF:

Procedure Description

Metal crowns and bridges are dental restorations designed to repair and replace damaged or missing teeth. Metal crowns are caps placed over a damaged tooth to restore its function and aesthetics, while bridges consist of one or more artificial teeth anchored in place using metal crowns attached to the adjacent healthy teeth. These dental solutions are known for their durability, strength, and longevity.

The use of metal in crowns and bridges provides superior strength compared to other materials like ceramic or porcelain. Commonly used metals include gold alloys, palladium, or a combination of metals. These metals are biocompatible and less likely to cause allergic reactions, making them a safe choice for many patients. Metal-based crowns and bridges are particularly useful in molar restorations, where the force of chewing is greatest, as they withstand the wear and tear better than other materials.

The process of getting a metal crown or bridge typically involves multiple steps. The dentist first examines the tooth or the space where the tooth is missing to determine the best approach. For crowns, the damaged tooth is prepared by removing a portion of its structure to make room for the crown. Impressions of the tooth and surrounding teeth are taken to create a model for the crown or bridge. A temporary crown or bridge may be placed while the permanent restoration is being fabricated. Once the permanent crown or bridge is ready, it is carefully fitted and cemented into place, restoring the tooth’s function and appearance.

Procedure Duration

The procedure for metal crowns and bridges generally takes place over two or three visits to the dentist. The first appointment involves an initial consultation and examination. During this visit, the dentist will assess the condition of the teeth and discuss the patient’s options, including the type of metal to be used for the crown or bridge.

The second appointment involves preparing the tooth (for crowns) or teeth (for bridges). For crowns, the tooth will be shaped to accommodate the metal crown, while for bridges, the teeth on either side of the gap will be prepared to support the bridge. Impressions are taken during this visit, which will be sent to a dental lab for the custom creation of the metal crown or bridge. A temporary crown or bridge is placed to protect the teeth while the permanent restoration is being made.

The final appointment is when the permanent crown or bridge is ready. The temporary crown or bridge is removed, and the dentist checks the fit and appearance of the new restoration. Once satisfied, the dentist cements the crown or bridge into place. The entire process, from consultation to final placement, can take a few weeks, depending on the patient’s availability and the time required for the lab to create the custom restoration. Recovery from the procedure is typically quick, with minor discomfort that can be managed with over-the-counter pain relief. Most patients can return to normal activities within a day or two.

Benefits

  • Durability: Metal crowns and bridges are highly durable and can last 15-20 years or more with proper care.
  • Strength: Metal restorations can withstand significant chewing forces, making them ideal for molar teeth.
  • Biocompatibility: Metals used in crowns and bridges are generally well-tolerated, reducing the risk of allergic reactions.
  • Precision Fit: Metal allows for a highly precise fit, reducing the risk of gaps between the crown or bridge and the natural tooth.
  • Cost-Effective: Metal crowns and bridges, particularly those made from non-precious alloys, are often more affordable than ceramic or porcelain alternatives.

Risks & Considerations

  • Allergic Reactions: Although rare, some patients may have allergic reactions to the metals used in crowns and bridges. It's important to discuss any known metal sensitivities with your dentist before the procedure.
  • Aesthetic Concerns: Metal crowns and bridges are not as aesthetically pleasing as porcelain or ceramic restorations, particularly for visible teeth. They are often recommended for molars or teeth that are less visible.
  • Wear on Opposing Teeth: Metal crowns can sometimes cause wear on the opposing natural teeth due to their hardness. Dentists may recommend additional care and monitoring to prevent excessive wear.
  • Temperature Sensitivity: Some patients may experience temporary sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures after the placement of metal crowns or bridges. This usually resolves within a few weeks.
  • Replacement Over Time: Although metal crowns and bridges are durable, they may eventually need replacement due to wear, damage, or changes in the surrounding teeth.

How to Choose the Right Doctor and Hospital

Selecting the right dentist and facility for metal crowns and bridges is crucial for achieving optimal results. Begin by researching clinics and professionals that specialize in restorative dentistry and have experience with metal-based crowns and bridges. Look for dentists who are members of reputable dental organizations, ensuring they adhere to high standards of care and continuing education.

It’s also important to choose a facility that is well-equipped with the latest dental technology. Advanced tools like digital impressions and CAD/CAM systems can improve the accuracy and fit of metal crowns and bridges. Reading patient reviews and testimonials can provide insights into the quality of care offered by both the dentist and the clinic. Additionally, consider seeking a second opinion if you're unsure about the recommended treatment plan to ensure you're making the best decision for your dental health.

Frequently Asked Questions

What actually happens during hyperstimulation of the ovaries?

The patient will take injectable FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) for eight to eleven days, depending on how long the follicles take to mature. This hormone is produced naturally in a woman’s body causing one egg to develop per cycle. Taking the injectable FSH causes several follicles to develop at once, at approximately the same rate. The development is monitored with vaginal ultrasounds and following the patient’s levels of estradiol and progesterone. FSH brand names include Repronex, Follistim, Menopur, Gonal-F and Bravelle. The patient injects herself daily.

What happens during egg retrieval?

When the follicles have developed enough to be harvested, the patient attends an appointment  where she is anesthetized and prepared for the procedure. Next, the doctor uses an ultrasound probe to guide a needle through the vaginal wall and into the follicle of the ovary. The thin needle draws the follicle fluid, which is then examined by an embryologist to find the eggs. The whole process takes about 20 minutes.

What happens to the eggs?

In the next step, the harvested eggs are then fertilized. If the sperm from the potential father, or in some cases, anonymous donor, has normal functionality, the eggs and sperm are placed together in a dish with a nutrient fluid, then incubated overnight to fertilize normally. If the sperm functionality is suboptimal, an embryologist uses Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection to inject a single sperm into a single egg with an extremely precise glass needle.  Once fertilization is complete, the embryos are assessed and prepared to be transferred to the patient’s uterus.

How are the embryos transferred back to the uterus?

The doctor and the patient will discuss the number of embryos to be transferred. The number of successfully fertilized eggs usually determines the number of eggs to be placed in the uterus. Embryos are transferred to the uterus with transabdominal ultrasound guidance. This process does not require anesthesia, but it can cause minor cervical or uterine discomfort. Following transfer, the patient is advised to take at least one days bed rest and two or three additional days of rest, then 10 to 12 days later, two pregnancy tests are scheduled to confirm success. Once two positive tests are completed, an obstetrical ultrasound is ordered to show the sac, fetal pole, yolk sac and fetal heart rate.

Embryoscope©

Built into this technology there is a microscope with a powerful camera that allows the uninterrupted monitoring of the embryo during its first hours of life. In this way, we can keep a close eye on the embryo, from the moment when the oocyte is inseminated and begins to divide into smaller and smaller cells, until it can be transferred to the uterus.
