Circumcision
Steps Involved in IVF:
Procedure Description
Circumcision is a surgical procedure in which the foreskin, the loose skin covering the tip of the penis, is removed. It can be performed on newborns, children, or adults, though the technique and recovery period can vary depending on the patient's age and medical condition.
The procedure typically begins with the administration of local or general anesthesia, especially for older children or adults. In newborns, local anesthesia is commonly used, while adults may require general anesthesia or sedation. Once the patient is properly anesthetized, the surgeon makes a small incision to remove the foreskin. Various techniques can be used, including the Gomco clamp, the Mogen clamp, and the Plastibell device, all of which ensure that the foreskin is separated and safely removed.
The circumcision process takes about 30 minutes, but this can vary depending on the patient's age and specific medical needs. After the foreskin is removed, the edges of the remaining skin are sutured together, and a bandage is applied to protect the area during the initial recovery phase.
For adult patients, circumcision is often performed due to medical conditions like phimosis, recurrent infections, or cosmetic reasons. In contrast, newborn circumcision is often a religious or cultural tradition or chosen by parents for hygiene purposes. Regardless of the age group, modern circumcision techniques focus on minimizing discomfort and ensuring a safe recovery period.
Procedure Duration
The duration of the circumcision procedure depends largely on the age of the patient and the surgical technique employed. For newborns, the procedure is relatively quick, typically lasting 10 to 15 minutes, as the tissue is easier to remove, and the healing process is faster. For adults, the procedure can take between 30 to 60 minutes, as there is more tissue to remove, and the complexity of the surgery is slightly higher.
Following the surgery, patients are generally monitored for a short period before being discharged. In the case of newborns, they can usually go home the same day, as the procedure is minimally invasive. For adults, especially those undergoing circumcision under general anesthesia, a longer observation period in the medical facility may be necessary to ensure no adverse effects from anesthesia.
The overall recovery period varies depending on the patient’s age. Newborns typically recover in 7 to 10 days, with minimal post-operative care required. Adults, however, may need 2 to 4 weeks for full recovery. During this time, patients are advised to avoid strenuous activities, keep the area clean, and monitor for any signs of infection or complications. In all cases, follow-up consultations are important to ensure proper healing.
Benefits
Circumcision offers several potential benefits, especially for those seeking the procedure for medical reasons. These benefits include:
- Improved Hygiene: Circumcision makes it easier to clean the penis and can help reduce the risk of infections caused by trapped bacteria under the foreskin.
- Reduced Risk of Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): Circumcised males have a lower risk of developing urinary tract infections, particularly in early childhood.
- Lower Risk of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): Research suggests that circumcision reduces the risk of contracting certain sexually transmitted infections, including HIV, herpes, and human papillomavirus (HPV).
- Prevention of Medical Conditions: Circumcision can prevent or treat conditions such as phimosis (tight foreskin) and balanitis (inflammation of the foreskin and penis).
- Reduced Risk of Penile Cancer: Although rare, circumcised men have a lower risk of developing penile cancer compared to uncircumcised men.

Risks & Considerations
While circumcision is generally considered safe, it is important to be aware of the potential risks and considerations:
- Infection: As with any surgical procedure, there is a risk of infection at the site of the incision. Proper post-operative care is crucial to minimize this risk.
- Bleeding: While uncommon, some patients may experience excessive bleeding during or after the procedure, particularly in adults or individuals with underlying health conditions.
- Pain: Some discomfort and pain can be expected post-surgery, although this can be managed with prescribed pain relievers.
- Scarring: In some cases, patients may develop minor scarring at the site of the circumcision, which can vary in appearance depending on the individual.
- Unsatisfactory Cosmetic Outcome: Some patients may be dissatisfied with the aesthetic results of the circumcision, especially when performed for cosmetic reasons in adulthood.
How to Choose the Right Doctor and Hospital
Choosing the right doctor and hospital for a circumcision procedure is critical to ensuring a safe and successful outcome. Start by researching the credentials and experience of potential surgeons. Ensure that the doctor is board-certified in their specialty and has significant experience performing circumcisions. For adult circumcision, experience in handling adult patients is particularly important due to the increased complexity of the procedure.
Additionally, look for hospitals that are accredited by international healthcare organizations. Accredited hospitals are more likely to adhere to global standards for patient safety, cleanliness, and medical protocols. When selecting a hospital, consider factors such as the quality of post-operative care, patient reviews, and the availability of modern medical technology.

Frequently Asked Questions
What actually happens during hyperstimulation of the ovaries?
The patient will take injectable FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) for eight to eleven days, depending on how long the follicles take to mature. This hormone is produced naturally in a woman’s body causing one egg to develop per cycle. Taking the injectable FSH causes several follicles to develop at once, at approximately the same rate. The development is monitored with vaginal ultrasounds and following the patient’s levels of estradiol and progesterone. FSH brand names include Repronex, Follistim, Menopur, Gonal-F and Bravelle. The patient injects herself daily.
What happens during egg retrieval?
When the follicles have developed enough to be harvested, the patient attends an appointment where she is anesthetized and prepared for the procedure. Next, the doctor uses an ultrasound probe to guide a needle through the vaginal wall and into the follicle of the ovary. The thin needle draws the follicle fluid, which is then examined by an embryologist to find the eggs. The whole process takes about 20 minutes.
What happens to the eggs?
In the next step, the harvested eggs are then fertilized. If the sperm from the potential father, or in some cases, anonymous donor, has normal functionality, the eggs and sperm are placed together in a dish with a nutrient fluid, then incubated overnight to fertilize normally. If the sperm functionality is suboptimal, an embryologist uses Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection to inject a single sperm into a single egg with an extremely precise glass needle. Once fertilization is complete, the embryos are assessed and prepared to be transferred to the patient’s uterus.
How are the embryos transferred back to the uterus?
The doctor and the patient will discuss the number of embryos to be transferred. The number of successfully fertilized eggs usually determines the number of eggs to be placed in the uterus. Embryos are transferred to the uterus with transabdominal ultrasound guidance. This process does not require anesthesia, but it can cause minor cervical or uterine discomfort. Following transfer, the patient is advised to take at least one days bed rest and two or three additional days of rest, then 10 to 12 days later, two pregnancy tests are scheduled to confirm success. Once two positive tests are completed, an obstetrical ultrasound is ordered to show the sac, fetal pole, yolk sac and fetal heart rate.
Embryoscope©
Built into this technology there is a microscope with a powerful camera that allows the uninterrupted monitoring of the embryo during its first hours of life. In this way, we can keep a close eye on the embryo, from the moment when the oocyte is inseminated and begins to divide into smaller and smaller cells, until it can be transferred to the uterus.
