Cardiological Checkup (Including Coronary CT Angio)

Steps Involved in IVF:

Procedure Description

A cardiological checkup, especially one that includes coronary CT angiography, is an essential preventive measure in modern heart care. Cardiological assessments involve a series of tests designed to evaluate heart health, identify risk factors, and uncover existing cardiovascular conditions, providing individuals with detailed insights into their heart’s functioning. The inclusion of a coronary CT angiography, a sophisticated imaging technique, offers high-definition images of the coronary arteries, enabling early detection of blockages or plaque buildup. This helps assess the likelihood of heart disease and provides doctors with the information needed for precise treatment planning.

The coronary CT angiography uses a powerful X-ray machine and a special dye injected into the bloodstream. This dye enhances the visibility of the arteries in the resulting images, helping doctors examine blood flow within the coronary arteries. During the scan, patients lie still on a table that moves through the CT machine’s circular opening, allowing the device to capture multiple cross-sectional images of the heart. These images are later compiled into a three-dimensional representation, allowing doctors to observe any irregularities within the arteries, such as calcification, narrowing, or other structural concerns.

This procedure, which is non-invasive, provides a safer alternative to traditional coronary angiography, which requires inserting a catheter into the heart. With coronary CT angiography, patients benefit from a quicker process with lower associated risks, making it an ideal option for many seeking heart health evaluations, especially in preventive and early-detection scenarios.

Procedure Duration

The length of a comprehensive cardiological checkup varies based on the specific tests included. A full assessment typically takes a few hours to a full day, with individual tests, like coronary CT angiography, lasting around 10-20 minutes. For coronary CT angiography, patients are advised to refrain from caffeine and other stimulants for 12 hours before the test, as these substances can impact heart rate. Upon arrival, patients may undergo a brief consultation with a cardiologist to discuss their medical history, which helps guide the specifics of the checkup.

The coronary CT angiography itself requires patients to be stationary for a few minutes while the CT scanner captures images. Some facilities use a heart rate monitor, and, in certain cases, patients may receive medication to ensure a stable heart rate during imaging. The test usually concludes quickly, with minimal discomfort. Afterward, patients are monitored for a brief period to ensure no adverse reactions to the dye.

Recovery time is essentially non-existent for coronary CT angiography, as it is non-invasive. Patients can resume normal activities immediately afterward, though they should stay hydrated to help flush the contrast dye from their system. After all tests are completed, patients may discuss preliminary results with the medical team or receive a comprehensive report in a few days, which includes a breakdown of findings and suggested follow-up steps if necessary.

Benefits

  • Early Detection: Coronary CT angiography can detect plaque buildup in arteries before symptoms appear, offering an early warning for coronary artery disease.
  • Non-Invasive: Unlike traditional angiography, coronary CT angiography does not require catheter insertion, reducing procedure risks.
  • Detailed Imaging: The high-resolution images allow doctors to assess artery structure and identify calcification or blockages accurately.
  • Quick and Painless: The scan itself takes only a few minutes, and patients can resume daily activities right away.
  • Preventive Insight: A comprehensive cardiological checkup provides valuable insights into overall heart health, aiding in long-term health management.

Risks & Considerations

  • Radiation Exposure: Although relatively low, coronary CT angiography does involve exposure to radiation. Patients should consider this, especially if they have undergone frequent imaging tests in the past.
  • Allergic Reactions: Some individuals may have an allergic reaction to the contrast dye. Hospitals generally assess allergy history, but it is vital to inform doctors of any previous reactions.
  • Contrast Dye-Related Risks: The contrast dye can strain the kidneys, particularly in patients with pre-existing kidney conditions. Hydration before and after the test can help minimize these risks.
  • Arrhythmia Concerns: While uncommon, some patients experience mild arrhythmia, or irregular heartbeats, during the test. Medical teams are prepared to address these issues if they arise.
  • False Positives/Negatives: In rare cases, coronary CT angiography may not detect certain types of blockages, or it may result in false positives. Follow-up tests or consultations may be necessary for a complete picture.

How to Choose the Right Doctor and Hospital

When choosing a doctor and hospital for a cardiological checkup, patients should prioritize facilities with specialized cardiology departments, preferably those with experience in non-invasive cardiovascular imaging. It is beneficial to look for hospitals with a strong reputation for cardiovascular care and advanced imaging equipment, ensuring access to accurate diagnostics. Additionally, researching the facility's credentials, patient satisfaction ratings, and certifications can provide valuable insight into the quality of care offered.

For selecting a doctor, it is essential to choose a board-certified cardiologist with experience in interpreting coronary CT angiography results. Patients should feel comfortable asking about the doctor’s qualifications and experience, as well as inquiring about how the results will be communicated and interpreted. A thorough discussion before and after the procedure can significantly enhance understanding, enabling patients to make informed decisions about their heart health.

Frequently Asked Questions

What actually happens during hyperstimulation of the ovaries?

The patient will take injectable FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) for eight to eleven days, depending on how long the follicles take to mature. This hormone is produced naturally in a woman’s body causing one egg to develop per cycle. Taking the injectable FSH causes several follicles to develop at once, at approximately the same rate. The development is monitored with vaginal ultrasounds and following the patient’s levels of estradiol and progesterone. FSH brand names include Repronex, Follistim, Menopur, Gonal-F and Bravelle. The patient injects herself daily.

What happens during egg retrieval?

When the follicles have developed enough to be harvested, the patient attends an appointment  where she is anesthetized and prepared for the procedure. Next, the doctor uses an ultrasound probe to guide a needle through the vaginal wall and into the follicle of the ovary. The thin needle draws the follicle fluid, which is then examined by an embryologist to find the eggs. The whole process takes about 20 minutes.

What happens to the eggs?

In the next step, the harvested eggs are then fertilized. If the sperm from the potential father, or in some cases, anonymous donor, has normal functionality, the eggs and sperm are placed together in a dish with a nutrient fluid, then incubated overnight to fertilize normally. If the sperm functionality is suboptimal, an embryologist uses Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection to inject a single sperm into a single egg with an extremely precise glass needle.  Once fertilization is complete, the embryos are assessed and prepared to be transferred to the patient’s uterus.

How are the embryos transferred back to the uterus?

The doctor and the patient will discuss the number of embryos to be transferred. The number of successfully fertilized eggs usually determines the number of eggs to be placed in the uterus. Embryos are transferred to the uterus with transabdominal ultrasound guidance. This process does not require anesthesia, but it can cause minor cervical or uterine discomfort. Following transfer, the patient is advised to take at least one days bed rest and two or three additional days of rest, then 10 to 12 days later, two pregnancy tests are scheduled to confirm success. Once two positive tests are completed, an obstetrical ultrasound is ordered to show the sac, fetal pole, yolk sac and fetal heart rate.

Embryoscope©

Built into this technology there is a microscope with a powerful camera that allows the uninterrupted monitoring of the embryo during its first hours of life. In this way, we can keep a close eye on the embryo, from the moment when the oocyte is inseminated and begins to divide into smaller and smaller cells, until it can be transferred to the uterus.
