Canthoplasty, Lifting the Outside of the Eye
Steps Involved in IVF:
Procedure Description
Canthoplasty is typically performed by oculoplastic surgeons or facial plastic surgeons specializing in procedures around the eyes. It involves precise adjustments to the outer corner of the eye to lift, reshape, or correct structural imbalances. The procedure starts with a small incision in the outer corner of the eye, where the surgeon gains access to the lateral canthal tendon. By repositioning or tightening this tendon, the outer eye corner is lifted to achieve a more upward or almond-shaped contour. The goal is to create a natural look without overly noticeable signs of surgery.
During canthoplasty, surgeons are meticulous about maintaining symmetry and achieving subtle results that complement the patient’s facial features. Often, the procedure is combined with other eye surgeries, such as blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), to address the entire eye area. In some cases, canthoplasty may be necessary to correct sagging or drooping eyelids resulting from age, genetics, or other conditions, which could obstruct vision or cause discomfort.
Most canthoplasty procedures are performed under local anesthesia with sedation, allowing for minimal downtime. While the incisions made during canthoplasty are small and strategically placed, patients can expect mild swelling or bruising immediately following the surgery. As the area heals, the scars become virtually invisible, blending seamlessly into the natural contours of the eye. With proper care, the final results of canthoplasty can last several years, providing a sustained lift and rejuvenated appearance.
Procedure Duration
Canthoplasty is generally a quick outpatient procedure lasting between 1 to 2 hours. The exact time depends on whether it is a standalone procedure or combined with other surgeries, like blepharoplasty. Patients typically receive local anesthesia with mild sedation, allowing them to remain relaxed throughout the surgery without feeling pain. The surgeon carefully measures and marks the areas to ensure symmetry and accuracy before beginning the procedure.
Following the surgery, the initial recovery phase lasts around one to two weeks, during which patients may experience mild swelling, bruising, and temporary tightness around the eye area. Cold compresses and prescribed medications help manage these symptoms, and most patients are advised to sleep with their heads elevated to minimize swelling. Stitches, if non-dissolvable, are usually removed within a week after the surgery, allowing the healing process to progress smoothly.
Patients can return to light daily activities within a few days; however, they should avoid strenuous activities, heavy lifting, and sun exposure for several weeks. Full results of the procedure become apparent after two to three months, once all swelling has subsided. While canthoplasty offers long-lasting results, the eye area will continue to age naturally, and some patients may choose to repeat the procedure or undergo touch-ups as needed.
Benefits
- Enhanced Eye Shape: Canthoplasty refines the eye shape, creating a youthful, almond-shaped contour that enhances facial symmetry.
- Rejuvenated Appearance: The procedure reduces sagging or drooping of the outer eye, creating a refreshed and alert look.
- Minimal Scarring: With small incisions and careful suturing, scarring is minimal and blends into the natural lines of the eye.
- Improved Vision in Some Cases: When combined with functional eyelid surgery, canthoplasty can help improve vision obstructed by drooping eyelids.
- Long-Lasting Results: With proper care, the effects of canthoplasty can last several years, providing sustained cosmetic benefits.

Risks & Considerations
- Swelling and Bruising: Mild swelling and bruising are common in the first few days, though they typically subside within a week. Cold compresses and rest help manage these symptoms.
- Infection: As with any surgery, there is a risk of infection. Patients should follow post-surgery instructions carefully and monitor for signs of infection, such as redness or discharge.
- Scarring: Although minimal, scarring is possible. Surgeons place incisions strategically to minimize visibility, but individual healing can affect scarring.
- Symmetry Issues: Achieving symmetry is essential in canthoplasty, but small variations may occur, potentially requiring revision surgery.
- Tear Duct Damage: The proximity of the surgery to the tear ducts means that, in rare cases, they could be impacted, leading to dry eyes or excessive tearing.
How to Choose the Right Doctor and Hospital
When selecting a surgeon for canthoplasty, it’s essential to consider their experience and specialization. Opt for board-certified oculoplastic or facial plastic surgeons who focus on eyelid and eye area procedures. This specialization ensures they have the expertise needed for precise techniques and an understanding of the eye’s complex anatomy.
Additionally, choose a facility that upholds international standards for safety and patient care. Hospitals and clinics with strong reputations for cosmetic and reconstructive surgeries often have strict protocols to ensure patient safety and comfort. Scheduling consultations with potential providers allows you to discuss your goals and expectations, review before-and-after photos, and gain confidence in your choice of provider.

Frequently Asked Questions
What actually happens during hyperstimulation of the ovaries?
The patient will take injectable FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) for eight to eleven days, depending on how long the follicles take to mature. This hormone is produced naturally in a woman’s body causing one egg to develop per cycle. Taking the injectable FSH causes several follicles to develop at once, at approximately the same rate. The development is monitored with vaginal ultrasounds and following the patient’s levels of estradiol and progesterone. FSH brand names include Repronex, Follistim, Menopur, Gonal-F and Bravelle. The patient injects herself daily.
What happens during egg retrieval?
When the follicles have developed enough to be harvested, the patient attends an appointment where she is anesthetized and prepared for the procedure. Next, the doctor uses an ultrasound probe to guide a needle through the vaginal wall and into the follicle of the ovary. The thin needle draws the follicle fluid, which is then examined by an embryologist to find the eggs. The whole process takes about 20 minutes.
What happens to the eggs?
In the next step, the harvested eggs are then fertilized. If the sperm from the potential father, or in some cases, anonymous donor, has normal functionality, the eggs and sperm are placed together in a dish with a nutrient fluid, then incubated overnight to fertilize normally. If the sperm functionality is suboptimal, an embryologist uses Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection to inject a single sperm into a single egg with an extremely precise glass needle. Once fertilization is complete, the embryos are assessed and prepared to be transferred to the patient’s uterus.
How are the embryos transferred back to the uterus?
The doctor and the patient will discuss the number of embryos to be transferred. The number of successfully fertilized eggs usually determines the number of eggs to be placed in the uterus. Embryos are transferred to the uterus with transabdominal ultrasound guidance. This process does not require anesthesia, but it can cause minor cervical or uterine discomfort. Following transfer, the patient is advised to take at least one days bed rest and two or three additional days of rest, then 10 to 12 days later, two pregnancy tests are scheduled to confirm success. Once two positive tests are completed, an obstetrical ultrasound is ordered to show the sac, fetal pole, yolk sac and fetal heart rate.
Embryoscope©
Built into this technology there is a microscope with a powerful camera that allows the uninterrupted monitoring of the embryo during its first hours of life. In this way, we can keep a close eye on the embryo, from the moment when the oocyte is inseminated and begins to divide into smaller and smaller cells, until it can be transferred to the uterus.
