Breast Lift with Implants

Steps Involved in IVF:

Procedure Description

A breast lift with implants is a cosmetic surgery combining two popular procedures—breast augmentation and breast lift (mastopexy)—to enhance both the size and position of the breasts. This dual approach addresses common concerns related to sagging, volume loss, and asymmetry, often resulting from aging, weight fluctuations, or pregnancy. By integrating breast implants with the lifting technique, the procedure can reshape and elevate the breasts, adding volume while creating a more youthful contour.

The procedure typically begins with the surgeon making precise incisions in the breast area. The pattern and length of incisions may vary, depending on the degree of sagging, the size and type of implant, and the patient’s anatomy. Surgeons commonly use either an “anchor” or “lollipop” incision, which offers excellent control in reshaping the breast and allows for optimal implant placement. Once the breast tissue is lifted and restructured, the surgeon inserts the chosen implants, placing them either under the chest muscle or over it, depending on the desired outcome and the patient’s natural anatomy.

After the implants are secured, the surgeon tightens the surrounding tissue to support the new shape, closes the incisions with sutures, and completes the surgery with bandages or support garments. The result is a well-proportioned, lifted, and fuller breast appearance. The combination of lift and implant results in a natural look and feel, as both procedures are tailored to meet each patient’s specific goals for shape, size, and position.

Procedure Duration

The breast lift with implants procedure typically takes between 2-4 hours, depending on factors such as the complexity of the lift and the implant placement technique. The procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia in an outpatient setting, meaning patients can often go home the same day, though some may choose to stay overnight for observation.

Immediately after the procedure, patients can expect a recovery phase that spans several weeks. During the first few days, swelling, bruising, and discomfort are common, and a supportive surgical bra may be required to minimize movement and aid in healing. Doctors recommend taking around 1-2 weeks off from work and avoiding strenuous activities during this time to support a smooth recovery.

By the third or fourth week, most patients experience a substantial reduction in swelling and discomfort, although it may take up to six months to see the final results as the implants settle and the tissue heals. Follow-up visits with the surgeon are essential during this period to ensure that healing is progressing properly, and patients can discuss any concerns or adjustments needed to optimize results.

Risks & Considerations

  • Infection: As with any surgery, there is a risk of infection, which may require additional treatment and extended recovery time.
  • Implant Complications: Implants may occasionally rupture, shift, or develop complications such as capsular contracture, which can affect the appearance and feel of the breasts.
  • Anesthesia Risks: General anesthesia carries inherent risks, including adverse reactions, especially in patients with preexisting health conditions.
  • Healing Time and Discomfort: Swelling, bruising, and soreness are common and can persist for several weeks, impacting daily activities and requiring patience and adherence to post-operative care instructions.

How to Choose the Right Doctor and Hospital

When selecting a doctor and hospital for a breast lift with implants, prioritize expertise and accreditation. Look for a board-certified plastic surgeon who specializes in breast surgeries, as experience in this area ensures that they are familiar with the latest techniques, safety protocols, and aesthetic considerations required for optimal results. Reading patient reviews and viewing before-and-after photos of the surgeon’s previous work can also provide insights into their skill level and aesthetic approach.

Choose a hospital or clinic with internationally recognized accreditations and a well-established reputation for patient safety and quality standards. These facilities should have experienced medical staff, advanced technology, and comprehensive post-operative care services. Additionally, consider consulting multiple providers to discuss treatment options, potential outcomes, and any concerns to make an informed decision tailored to your specific needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What actually happens during hyperstimulation of the ovaries?

The patient will take injectable FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) for eight to eleven days, depending on how long the follicles take to mature. This hormone is produced naturally in a woman’s body causing one egg to develop per cycle. Taking the injectable FSH causes several follicles to develop at once, at approximately the same rate. The development is monitored with vaginal ultrasounds and following the patient’s levels of estradiol and progesterone. FSH brand names include Repronex, Follistim, Menopur, Gonal-F and Bravelle. The patient injects herself daily.

What happens during egg retrieval?

When the follicles have developed enough to be harvested, the patient attends an appointment  where she is anesthetized and prepared for the procedure. Next, the doctor uses an ultrasound probe to guide a needle through the vaginal wall and into the follicle of the ovary. The thin needle draws the follicle fluid, which is then examined by an embryologist to find the eggs. The whole process takes about 20 minutes.

What happens to the eggs?

In the next step, the harvested eggs are then fertilized. If the sperm from the potential father, or in some cases, anonymous donor, has normal functionality, the eggs and sperm are placed together in a dish with a nutrient fluid, then incubated overnight to fertilize normally. If the sperm functionality is suboptimal, an embryologist uses Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection to inject a single sperm into a single egg with an extremely precise glass needle.  Once fertilization is complete, the embryos are assessed and prepared to be transferred to the patient’s uterus.

How are the embryos transferred back to the uterus?

The doctor and the patient will discuss the number of embryos to be transferred. The number of successfully fertilized eggs usually determines the number of eggs to be placed in the uterus. Embryos are transferred to the uterus with transabdominal ultrasound guidance. This process does not require anesthesia, but it can cause minor cervical or uterine discomfort. Following transfer, the patient is advised to take at least one days bed rest and two or three additional days of rest, then 10 to 12 days later, two pregnancy tests are scheduled to confirm success. Once two positive tests are completed, an obstetrical ultrasound is ordered to show the sac, fetal pole, yolk sac and fetal heart rate.

Embryoscope©

Built into this technology there is a microscope with a powerful camera that allows the uninterrupted monitoring of the embryo during its first hours of life. In this way, we can keep a close eye on the embryo, from the moment when the oocyte is inseminated and begins to divide into smaller and smaller cells, until it can be transferred to the uterus.
