Breast Augmentation (With/Including Implants)

Steps Involved in IVF:

Procedure Description

Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure aimed at enhancing the size, shape, and fullness of the breasts. Typically, it involves the insertion of implants—made from materials like silicone or saline—beneath the breast tissue or chest muscles to achieve the desired outcome. For many individuals, this procedure enhances body confidence and provides a more balanced body silhouette, addressing concerns about breast size, asymmetry, or shape after events like pregnancy, weight loss, or aging.

The augmentation process begins with a consultation, during which a surgeon assesses a patient’s goals, body structure, and medical history to determine the most suitable implant type, size, and placement. Patients generally have the option of silicone or saline implants, each with distinct characteristics. Silicone implants, pre-filled with a gel that mimics natural breast tissue, are preferred for their realistic look and feel, while saline implants are filled with sterile saltwater after insertion, allowing for a slightly smaller incision.

To ensure patient safety, breast augmentation is performed under general anesthesia. Surgeons create an incision, usually along the crease of the breast, around the areola, or in the armpit, depending on the desired outcome and the patient’s anatomy. Through this incision, the implant is positioned either beneath the chest muscle (submuscular placement) or directly behind the breast tissue (subglandular placement). Once positioned, the incision is closed, and the breast area is bandaged to begin the healing process.

Procedure Duration

The breast augmentation procedure itself typically lasts between one and two hours, depending on the complexity of the surgery, the implant type, and the placement technique. After arriving at the facility, patients will undergo pre-operative preparations, which include anesthesia administration and final markings to guide the surgeon during the procedure. Once the surgery is completed, patients are monitored during a recovery period before discharge.

Post-surgery, recovery occurs in phases. Initial recovery takes place within the first few hours to days, during which patients may experience some swelling, bruising, and discomfort. These are managed through prescribed medications and support garments. Most patients can resume light daily activities within a week but should avoid strenuous activities for at least 4-6 weeks. For optimal healing, surgeons generally recommend follow-up appointments to ensure the implants have settled properly and to monitor for any potential complications.

Full recovery and final results from breast augmentation can take several months as the swelling subsides and the implants settle into their final position. Patients are advised to adhere to post-operative care instructions and maintain a healthy lifestyle to support healing. While short-term results are visible within weeks, long-term results become apparent after several months, contributing to overall satisfaction with the procedure.

Risks & Considerations

  • Capsular Contracture: This is a condition where scar tissue forms around the implant, potentially causing discomfort and altering breast appearance. Treatment may require additional surgery to correct.
  • Implant Rupture or Leakage: Implants may rupture or leak over time, especially if they sustain trauma. Silicone implant ruptures may require imaging for detection, while saline ruptures are noticeable immediately.
  • Infection: Though rare, infections can occur at the incision site or around the implant. This risk is minimized by adhering to proper surgical techniques and post-operative care, but antibiotics or further intervention may be necessary.
  • Changes in Sensation: Some patients experience temporary or permanent changes in breast or nipple sensation after surgery, which can vary based on incision location and implant placement.
  • Implant Displacement: Implants may shift or rotate from their original position, leading to an uneven appearance. This complication may necessitate revision surgery to reposition the implants.

How to Choose the Right Doctor and Hospital

When choosing a provider for breast augmentation, prioritize board-certified plastic surgeons with extensive experience in breast surgeries. Research each surgeon’s credentials, focusing on those with positive patient reviews and a portfolio of successful procedures. Personal consultations are invaluable, as they allow potential patients to discuss expectations, view before-and-after photos, and gain a sense of the surgeon's approach to achieving natural-looking results.

Equally important is the choice of a hospital or clinic. Reputable facilities adhere to high safety standards, possess advanced medical equipment, and ensure rigorous sanitation protocols to minimize infection risks. Look for facilities accredited by reputable health authorities, as this ensures they meet international healthcare standards. Choosing a hospital with a specialized department for cosmetic procedures may also provide additional peace of mind, as these centers are experienced in handling elective surgeries and patient care specific to aesthetic enhancement.

Frequently Asked Questions

What actually happens during hyperstimulation of the ovaries?

The patient will take injectable FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) for eight to eleven days, depending on how long the follicles take to mature. This hormone is produced naturally in a woman’s body causing one egg to develop per cycle. Taking the injectable FSH causes several follicles to develop at once, at approximately the same rate. The development is monitored with vaginal ultrasounds and following the patient’s levels of estradiol and progesterone. FSH brand names include Repronex, Follistim, Menopur, Gonal-F and Bravelle. The patient injects herself daily.

What happens during egg retrieval?

When the follicles have developed enough to be harvested, the patient attends an appointment  where she is anesthetized and prepared for the procedure. Next, the doctor uses an ultrasound probe to guide a needle through the vaginal wall and into the follicle of the ovary. The thin needle draws the follicle fluid, which is then examined by an embryologist to find the eggs. The whole process takes about 20 minutes.

What happens to the eggs?

In the next step, the harvested eggs are then fertilized. If the sperm from the potential father, or in some cases, anonymous donor, has normal functionality, the eggs and sperm are placed together in a dish with a nutrient fluid, then incubated overnight to fertilize normally. If the sperm functionality is suboptimal, an embryologist uses Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection to inject a single sperm into a single egg with an extremely precise glass needle.  Once fertilization is complete, the embryos are assessed and prepared to be transferred to the patient’s uterus.

How are the embryos transferred back to the uterus?

The doctor and the patient will discuss the number of embryos to be transferred. The number of successfully fertilized eggs usually determines the number of eggs to be placed in the uterus. Embryos are transferred to the uterus with transabdominal ultrasound guidance. This process does not require anesthesia, but it can cause minor cervical or uterine discomfort. Following transfer, the patient is advised to take at least one days bed rest and two or three additional days of rest, then 10 to 12 days later, two pregnancy tests are scheduled to confirm success. Once two positive tests are completed, an obstetrical ultrasound is ordered to show the sac, fetal pole, yolk sac and fetal heart rate.

Embryoscope©

Built into this technology there is a microscope with a powerful camera that allows the uninterrupted monitoring of the embryo during its first hours of life. In this way, we can keep a close eye on the embryo, from the moment when the oocyte is inseminated and begins to divide into smaller and smaller cells, until it can be transferred to the uterus.
