Body Lift

Steps Involved in IVF:

Procedure Description

A body lift is an extensive cosmetic surgery that focuses on reshaping the body by removing excess skin and tightening the remaining tissue, often after significant weight loss. This procedure typically targets the midsection, thighs, buttocks, and other areas where sagging or loose skin may be present. Body lifts are sought by patients who have achieved significant weight loss, often through bariatric surgery or rigorous lifestyle changes, resulting in excess skin that may be resistant to further weight reduction efforts. This surgical approach aims to provide a smoother, more toned appearance by eliminating excess skin and enhancing the body’s overall contour.

During a body lift, a series of incisions are made to carefully remove redundant skin and tighten underlying tissues. This may include lifting the abdomen, flanks, back, and lower body. In addition, a body lift may incorporate liposuction to remove localized fat deposits that have not responded to diet or exercise. The surgery generally involves one or more procedures, depending on the patient's goals, which can be tailored to focus on specific areas or achieve a complete lower or upper body transformation.

A body lift is typically recommended for those who have stable body weight, are in good overall health, and maintain realistic expectations about the outcome. It is crucial to note that a body lift is not a weight-loss procedure but rather a body-contouring surgery designed to refine and improve the silhouette. Patients considering this surgery should be prepared for a recovery period and follow a carefully structured aftercare plan to ensure optimal results.

Procedure Duration

A body lift is a comprehensive surgical procedure that requires careful planning, as it involves multiple areas of the body. The actual surgery can take between 4 to 8 hours, depending on the extent of the lift and the number of areas involved. In cases where the procedure is extensive, it may even be completed in multiple stages to reduce surgical risk and aid in recovery. The surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia, and patients are usually required to stay in the hospital for one or two nights post-operation to ensure a safe and stable recovery.

Recovery from a body lift is a multi-phase process. In the initial phase, which typically lasts about two weeks, patients experience significant swelling, bruising, and discomfort, which can be managed through prescribed pain medications. During this period, patients are generally advised to rest, limit movement, and wear compression garments to help control swelling and support healing. While most individuals can resume light activities after a few weeks, strenuous physical activities are usually restricted for at least 4 to 6 weeks to ensure that the body has healed adequately.

Long-term recovery involves a gradual return to normal activities, with visible improvements in body contour appearing around three months after surgery, once swelling subsides. However, full results may take up to a year to become fully evident as the body continues to adapt. Following the surgeon's post-operative care instructions is essential for maintaining the results and minimizing the risk of complications.

Risks & Considerations

  • Scarring: As a significant procedure involving large incisions, body lifts result in visible scars. Though they fade over time, they may remain noticeable.
  • Infection: Like all surgeries, there is a risk of infection, which can delay healing and may require additional medical treatment.
  • Blood Clots: Body lift surgeries carry a risk of blood clots, which can be minimized with proper post-operative care and gradual return to activity.
  • Anesthesia Risks: General anesthesia presents certain risks, especially for patients with underlying health conditions, and should be discussed thoroughly with the medical team.
  • Nerve Damage: In rare cases, there may be temporary or permanent nerve damage that affects sensation in the treated areas.

How to Choose the Right Doctor and Hospital

Selecting the right surgeon and facility is crucial for achieving optimal results and minimizing risks associated with a body lift. Patients should look for board-certified plastic surgeons with extensive experience in body-contouring surgeries. It's essential to verify their qualifications, review before-and-after photos of previous body lift procedures, and, if possible, read patient testimonials.

When choosing a hospital, it’s advisable to opt for an internationally accredited facility equipped with modern surgical technology and a reliable patient care system. Facilities that cater to international patients are often better prepared to provide assistance with travel arrangements, language support, and post-operative care, making the process smoother for those traveling abroad for the procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions

What actually happens during hyperstimulation of the ovaries?

The patient will take injectable FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) for eight to eleven days, depending on how long the follicles take to mature. This hormone is produced naturally in a woman’s body causing one egg to develop per cycle. Taking the injectable FSH causes several follicles to develop at once, at approximately the same rate. The development is monitored with vaginal ultrasounds and following the patient’s levels of estradiol and progesterone. FSH brand names include Repronex, Follistim, Menopur, Gonal-F and Bravelle. The patient injects herself daily.

What happens during egg retrieval?

When the follicles have developed enough to be harvested, the patient attends an appointment  where she is anesthetized and prepared for the procedure. Next, the doctor uses an ultrasound probe to guide a needle through the vaginal wall and into the follicle of the ovary. The thin needle draws the follicle fluid, which is then examined by an embryologist to find the eggs. The whole process takes about 20 minutes.

What happens to the eggs?

In the next step, the harvested eggs are then fertilized. If the sperm from the potential father, or in some cases, anonymous donor, has normal functionality, the eggs and sperm are placed together in a dish with a nutrient fluid, then incubated overnight to fertilize normally. If the sperm functionality is suboptimal, an embryologist uses Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection to inject a single sperm into a single egg with an extremely precise glass needle.  Once fertilization is complete, the embryos are assessed and prepared to be transferred to the patient’s uterus.

How are the embryos transferred back to the uterus?

The doctor and the patient will discuss the number of embryos to be transferred. The number of successfully fertilized eggs usually determines the number of eggs to be placed in the uterus. Embryos are transferred to the uterus with transabdominal ultrasound guidance. This process does not require anesthesia, but it can cause minor cervical or uterine discomfort. Following transfer, the patient is advised to take at least one days bed rest and two or three additional days of rest, then 10 to 12 days later, two pregnancy tests are scheduled to confirm success. Once two positive tests are completed, an obstetrical ultrasound is ordered to show the sac, fetal pole, yolk sac and fetal heart rate.

Embryoscope©

Built into this technology there is a microscope with a powerful camera that allows the uninterrupted monitoring of the embryo during its first hours of life. In this way, we can keep a close eye on the embryo, from the moment when the oocyte is inseminated and begins to divide into smaller and smaller cells, until it can be transferred to the uterus.
