Body Contouring After Massive Weight Loss

Steps Involved in IVF:

Procedure Description

Body contouring after massive weight loss is a set of surgical procedures designed to remove excess skin and reshape the body after significant weight reduction. Individuals who undergo massive weight loss, whether through lifestyle changes or bariatric surgery, often find that they are left with excess, loose skin. This loose skin can hinder mobility, lead to discomfort, and cause irritation or even infections in some cases. Body contouring addresses these concerns by removing and tightening the skin and tissue, giving patients a more natural, streamlined silhouette.

This procedure can be highly personalized, targeting specific areas like the abdomen, arms, thighs, buttocks, and breasts. Common procedures within body contouring include abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), brachioplasty (arm lift), thigh lift, lower body lift, and breast lift. The combination of procedures chosen depends on the individual’s body, the areas most affected by loose skin, and the patient's aesthetic goals.

Body contouring is an invasive surgical approach requiring significant recovery, preparation, and planning. The procedure generally involves multiple surgical stages to allow the body to heal properly. Given the complexity, patients are often advised to maintain a stable weight for at least six months before considering body contouring. Achieving one’s weight goals and stabilizing weight ensures optimal and lasting results from the contouring procedures.

Procedure Duration

Body contouring procedures are extensive and may require multiple surgeries over several months or even years. Each procedure typically lasts between three to five hours, depending on the areas being addressed and the complexity of the patient’s individual needs. In cases where multiple areas are being treated, surgeries are often staged to minimize risks and facilitate healing.

The recovery process for body contouring can vary based on the specific procedures performed. Typically, the initial recovery period for each procedure lasts about two to three weeks, during which patients are advised to limit movement, avoid strenuous activities, and follow a specific regimen prescribed by their surgeon. Complete recovery, allowing for unrestricted activity and exercise, can take several months. During this time, the patient’s physical activity and diet play a crucial role in healing and achieving optimal results.

Patients often need to take time off work and arrange for post-surgical support at home, particularly in the first few weeks after surgery. The need for follow-up visits to the surgeon and possible touch-up surgeries also means that body contouring is a commitment requiring substantial planning and preparation.

Risks & Considerations

  • Scarring: Body contouring surgeries often result in visible scars, although surgeons work to minimize them and ensure they are as discreet as possible.
  • Infection Risk: Like any surgical procedure, body contouring carries a risk of infection, especially in areas with large incisions.
  • Prolonged Recovery: Given the extensive nature of body contouring, recovery can be long and requires significant lifestyle adjustments.
  • Skin Irregularities: Some patients may experience uneven skin contour or asymmetry after healing, which may require revision surgery.
  • Expense: Body contouring, especially involving multiple areas, can be costly, and patients should consider long-term financial commitments, including potential follow-up procedures.

How to Choose the Right Doctor and Hospital

Selecting a qualified doctor and facility is crucial for a successful body contouring experience. Begin by researching board-certified plastic surgeons who specialize in body contouring for post-weight-loss patients. Ensure that the surgeon has extensive experience in the specific procedures required and is skilled in achieving balanced, natural-looking results.

Equally important is choosing a facility that meets international standards of cleanliness and patient care. Look for hospitals accredited by reputable healthcare standards organizations, as they typically uphold stringent safety and quality protocols. Additionally, reading reviews, consulting with past patients, and requesting a comprehensive overview of the surgeon's experience can help ensure a safe, effective body contouring experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

What actually happens during hyperstimulation of the ovaries?

The patient will take injectable FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) for eight to eleven days, depending on how long the follicles take to mature. This hormone is produced naturally in a woman’s body causing one egg to develop per cycle. Taking the injectable FSH causes several follicles to develop at once, at approximately the same rate. The development is monitored with vaginal ultrasounds and following the patient’s levels of estradiol and progesterone. FSH brand names include Repronex, Follistim, Menopur, Gonal-F and Bravelle. The patient injects herself daily.

What happens during egg retrieval?

When the follicles have developed enough to be harvested, the patient attends an appointment  where she is anesthetized and prepared for the procedure. Next, the doctor uses an ultrasound probe to guide a needle through the vaginal wall and into the follicle of the ovary. The thin needle draws the follicle fluid, which is then examined by an embryologist to find the eggs. The whole process takes about 20 minutes.

What happens to the eggs?

In the next step, the harvested eggs are then fertilized. If the sperm from the potential father, or in some cases, anonymous donor, has normal functionality, the eggs and sperm are placed together in a dish with a nutrient fluid, then incubated overnight to fertilize normally. If the sperm functionality is suboptimal, an embryologist uses Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection to inject a single sperm into a single egg with an extremely precise glass needle.  Once fertilization is complete, the embryos are assessed and prepared to be transferred to the patient’s uterus.

How are the embryos transferred back to the uterus?

The doctor and the patient will discuss the number of embryos to be transferred. The number of successfully fertilized eggs usually determines the number of eggs to be placed in the uterus. Embryos are transferred to the uterus with transabdominal ultrasound guidance. This process does not require anesthesia, but it can cause minor cervical or uterine discomfort. Following transfer, the patient is advised to take at least one days bed rest and two or three additional days of rest, then 10 to 12 days later, two pregnancy tests are scheduled to confirm success. Once two positive tests are completed, an obstetrical ultrasound is ordered to show the sac, fetal pole, yolk sac and fetal heart rate.

Embryoscope©

Built into this technology there is a microscope with a powerful camera that allows the uninterrupted monitoring of the embryo during its first hours of life. In this way, we can keep a close eye on the embryo, from the moment when the oocyte is inseminated and begins to divide into smaller and smaller cells, until it can be transferred to the uterus.
