Bariclip

Steps Involved in IVF:

Procedure Description

Bariclip is an emerging weight loss surgery that provides a reversible and minimally invasive alternative to traditional bariatric procedures such as gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy. This technique involves placing a silicone clip around the upper part of the stomach to restrict food intake, ultimately leading to weight loss. Unlike more invasive bariatric procedures that alter or remove parts of the stomach, the Bariclip procedure focuses on creating a reduced stomach capacity without permanent anatomical changes. This reversible nature makes it an attractive option for patients looking for a non-permanent weight management solution.

The clip is made of biocompatible materials, primarily silicone, and is designed to reshape the stomach into a smaller pouch, reducing the amount of food that can be consumed at one time. This promotes a sense of fullness quickly, thereby aiding in calorie control and weight loss. The Bariclip is placed laparoscopically, meaning that the procedure involves small incisions and the use of a laparoscope (a thin, flexible camera), reducing the trauma associated with open surgery.

Unlike some bariatric procedures that alter nutrient absorption, the Bariclip does not affect the body's ability to absorb nutrients, as no part of the intestine is bypassed or removed. This means patients are less likely to experience some of the deficiencies and malabsorption issues associated with more aggressive bariatric surgeries, making it a suitable option for those seeking a safer, reversible method for sustainable weight loss.

Procedure Duration

The Bariclip procedure generally lasts between 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the patient's individual anatomy and the surgeon's experience. Since the procedure is performed laparoscopically, it involves several small incisions rather than one large one, which leads to quicker surgery time and faster recovery. Patients typically undergo general anesthesia during the procedure, ensuring comfort and minimizing pain.

The surgery itself comprises several phases. First, small incisions are made on the abdomen to insert the laparoscopic tools. The surgeon then uses a camera to visualize the stomach and carefully places the silicone clip around the top portion of the stomach, creating a small gastric pouch. The clip is secured in place to ensure it does not move, effectively limiting the volume of food the stomach can hold. Once the clip is positioned and checked for correct placement, the incisions are closed, and the procedure is completed.

Recovery time is significantly reduced compared to other weight loss surgeries. Patients can often leave the hospital within 24-48 hours after surgery, and many are able to resume their normal activities within a week. Due to the minimally invasive nature of the surgery, post-operative pain is usually mild and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers. However, as with any surgical procedure, it is crucial to follow a structured post-operative care plan to promote healing and maximize the benefits of the Bariclip.

Benefits

  • Minimally Invasive: The laparoscopic approach results in less pain, reduced scarring, and quicker recovery.
  • Reversible and Adjustable: Unlike traditional bariatric surgeries, the Bariclip can be removed or adjusted if necessary, providing flexibility in treatment.
  • Reduced Risk of Nutritional Deficiency: No rerouting of intestines or malabsorption of nutrients occurs, lowering the risk of vitamin and mineral deficiencies.
  • Shorter Hospital Stay: Patients typically require only 1-2 days of hospitalization, making it convenient for those looking for a swift recovery.
  • No Anatomical Alterations: The stomach remains intact, avoiding permanent changes to the digestive tract and potentially reducing complications associated with traditional weight loss surgeries.

The country's luxury medical centers provide an unparalleled patient experience, and its commitment to healthcare excellence makes the UAE a premier destination for weight loss surgeries.

Risks & Considerations

  • Potential for Complications: Although minimally invasive, the Bariclip procedure carries risks like bleeding, infection, and anesthesia reactions, which are common in any surgical procedure.
  • Possibility of Clip Displacement: In some cases, the Bariclip may shift from its original position, which may require additional surgical intervention to correct.
  • Digestive Discomfort: Patients may experience symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, or acid reflux, especially in the initial period after surgery as the body adjusts to the new stomach size.
  • Gradual Weight Loss: Compared to more invasive bariatric procedures, weight loss with the Bariclip might be more gradual and require strict adherence to diet and lifestyle changes to achieve desired results.
  • Need for Lifestyle Changes: The success of the Bariclip procedure depends significantly on the patient's commitment to a healthy diet and regular exercise, as it is a tool for weight loss rather than a cure.

How to Choose the Right Doctor and Hospital

When seeking a qualified surgeon and hospital for the Bariclip procedure, it is essential to consider the surgeon's experience with bariatric surgeries, specifically with the Bariclip. Look for a surgeon who has a proven track record, extensive training, and certification in bariatric procedures. A consultation is crucial to evaluate the surgeon's approach, discuss your expectations, and ensure they understand your specific needs.

The hospital or clinic should be equipped with modern technology, a multidisciplinary team to provide comprehensive care, and a reputation for safety and quality in medical tourism. It is also important to verify that the facility adheres to international healthcare standards, ensuring that you receive reliable and effective care throughout your treatment journey.

Frequently Asked Questions

What actually happens during hyperstimulation of the ovaries?

The patient will take injectable FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) for eight to eleven days, depending on how long the follicles take to mature. This hormone is produced naturally in a woman’s body causing one egg to develop per cycle. Taking the injectable FSH causes several follicles to develop at once, at approximately the same rate. The development is monitored with vaginal ultrasounds and following the patient’s levels of estradiol and progesterone. FSH brand names include Repronex, Follistim, Menopur, Gonal-F and Bravelle. The patient injects herself daily.

What happens during egg retrieval?

When the follicles have developed enough to be harvested, the patient attends an appointment  where she is anesthetized and prepared for the procedure. Next, the doctor uses an ultrasound probe to guide a needle through the vaginal wall and into the follicle of the ovary. The thin needle draws the follicle fluid, which is then examined by an embryologist to find the eggs. The whole process takes about 20 minutes.

What happens to the eggs?

In the next step, the harvested eggs are then fertilized. If the sperm from the potential father, or in some cases, anonymous donor, has normal functionality, the eggs and sperm are placed together in a dish with a nutrient fluid, then incubated overnight to fertilize normally. If the sperm functionality is suboptimal, an embryologist uses Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection to inject a single sperm into a single egg with an extremely precise glass needle.  Once fertilization is complete, the embryos are assessed and prepared to be transferred to the patient’s uterus.

How are the embryos transferred back to the uterus?

The doctor and the patient will discuss the number of embryos to be transferred. The number of successfully fertilized eggs usually determines the number of eggs to be placed in the uterus. Embryos are transferred to the uterus with transabdominal ultrasound guidance. This process does not require anesthesia, but it can cause minor cervical or uterine discomfort. Following transfer, the patient is advised to take at least one days bed rest and two or three additional days of rest, then 10 to 12 days later, two pregnancy tests are scheduled to confirm success. Once two positive tests are completed, an obstetrical ultrasound is ordered to show the sac, fetal pole, yolk sac and fetal heart rate.

Embryoscope©

Built into this technology there is a microscope with a powerful camera that allows the uninterrupted monitoring of the embryo during its first hours of life. In this way, we can keep a close eye on the embryo, from the moment when the oocyte is inseminated and begins to divide into smaller and smaller cells, until it can be transferred to the uterus.
