Allergic Conjunctivitis

Steps Involved in IVF:

Procedure Description

Allergic conjunctivitis is a common eye condition that arises when the eye’s conjunctiva, the thin layer covering the white part of the eye and the inner eyelids, reacts to allergens. These allergens can include pollen, dust, animal dander, mold, and various environmental factors. The condition triggers the body’s immune response, causing the eyes to become red, itchy, watery, and swollen. Unlike infectious conjunctivitis, allergic conjunctivitis is not contagious, but it can significantly impact an individual's quality of life, especially if not managed effectively.

There are two primary types of allergic conjunctivitis: seasonal and perennial. Seasonal allergic conjunctivitis occurs mainly in spring and summer due to outdoor allergens like pollen. Perennial allergic conjunctivitis, on the other hand, can happen year-round, often triggered by indoor allergens such as dust mites and pet dander. Some individuals may also develop more severe forms, like vernal keratoconjunctivitis or atopic keratoconjunctivitis, which require specialized treatment due to the risk of long-term damage to the eyes.

The treatment of allergic conjunctivitis involves managing symptoms and reducing exposure to triggers. Many mild cases can be managed with over-the-counter antihistamine eye drops and artificial tears. However, for chronic or severe cases, advanced treatments may be required, including prescription eye drops, allergy immunotherapy, and even specialized therapies to manage inflammation. These treatments aim to control symptoms and improve the patient's quality of life, often enabling them to lead an active lifestyle without persistent discomfort.

Procedure Duration

The treatment duration for allergic conjunctivitis can vary based on the severity of symptoms and the type of intervention chosen. For mild cases, over-the-counter antihistamine drops can provide immediate relief within minutes to hours. This symptom management approach can be applied as needed, particularly during high-allergen seasons like spring and summer.

For more severe cases or chronic allergic conjunctivitis, a longer treatment plan may be necessary. Prescription antihistamines, mast cell stabilizers, or corticosteroids are usually prescribed and may require several days to show full effectiveness. In cases where corticosteroids are prescribed, medical professionals generally monitor their use closely to prevent potential side effects from prolonged exposure, such as increased intraocular pressure or cataract formation.

In addition, allergen immunotherapy (allergy shots) may be recommended for individuals with recurrent symptoms despite standard treatments. This therapy requires a long-term commitment, with regular injections over a period of three to five years. Immunotherapy gradually builds tolerance to allergens, potentially reducing or even eliminating symptoms over time. Recovery from allergic conjunctivitis itself is generally immediate once the allergen is removed and symptoms are managed, but long-term management strategies are often essential to maintain relief.

Benefits

  • Effective Symptom Relief: Provides relief from itching, redness, and watering, enhancing daily comfort.
  • Improved Quality of Life: Reduces discomfort and eye irritation, allowing individuals to engage in daily activities.
  • Non-invasive Management Options: Mild cases can often be treated with over-the-counter options, avoiding invasive procedures.
  • Long-term Control through Immunotherapy: For chronic sufferers, immunotherapy offers the potential for lasting relief from allergy symptoms.
  • Customizable Treatment Plans: Treatments range from short-term symptomatic relief to long-term immunotherapy, allowing tailored solutions.

Potential Destinations

  • India: With its modern eye care centers and affordable treatment options, India attracts international patients seeking quality care at a lower cost. Many facilities are equipped to handle complex cases, including chronic and severe allergic conjunctivitis.

Risks & Considerations

  • Potential Side Effects of Eye Drops: Long-term use of certain eye drops, especially corticosteroids, can lead to complications such as increased eye pressure and cataract formation.
  • Possible Allergic Reactions: Some treatments may cause allergic reactions themselves, necessitating careful monitoring and tailored solutions.
  • Risk of Infection: Regular contact with the eyes, such as through frequent eye drop use, may increase the risk of bacterial contamination if proper hygiene isn’t maintained.
  • Cost of Long-term Treatments: Immunotherapy, while effective, can be costly over its long duration, so budgeting for ongoing care is essential.
  • Limited Effectiveness for Severe Cases: While many benefit from treatments, individuals with chronic or severe conditions may need a combination of therapies to achieve relief.

How to Choose the Right Doctor and Hospital

Selecting the right doctor and hospital for allergic conjunctivitis treatment requires careful research and consideration. It is essential to seek a board-certified ophthalmologist or allergist with experience in treating eye allergies. Look for professionals who specialize in ocular immunology or allergy and who stay current with the latest advancements in allergy treatments.

The hospital or clinic should have a strong track record of successful outcomes and access to specialized diagnostic tools and treatment options, especially if advanced treatments like immunotherapy are considered. Prioritize facilities that offer comprehensive allergy testing, as this can be crucial in identifying the specific allergens responsible for symptoms, ensuring a more tailored and effective treatment approach.

Frequently Asked Questions

What actually happens during hyperstimulation of the ovaries?

The patient will take injectable FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) for eight to eleven days, depending on how long the follicles take to mature. This hormone is produced naturally in a woman’s body causing one egg to develop per cycle. Taking the injectable FSH causes several follicles to develop at once, at approximately the same rate. The development is monitored with vaginal ultrasounds and following the patient’s levels of estradiol and progesterone. FSH brand names include Repronex, Follistim, Menopur, Gonal-F and Bravelle. The patient injects herself daily.

What happens during egg retrieval?

When the follicles have developed enough to be harvested, the patient attends an appointment  where she is anesthetized and prepared for the procedure. Next, the doctor uses an ultrasound probe to guide a needle through the vaginal wall and into the follicle of the ovary. The thin needle draws the follicle fluid, which is then examined by an embryologist to find the eggs. The whole process takes about 20 minutes.

What happens to the eggs?

In the next step, the harvested eggs are then fertilized. If the sperm from the potential father, or in some cases, anonymous donor, has normal functionality, the eggs and sperm are placed together in a dish with a nutrient fluid, then incubated overnight to fertilize normally. If the sperm functionality is suboptimal, an embryologist uses Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection to inject a single sperm into a single egg with an extremely precise glass needle.  Once fertilization is complete, the embryos are assessed and prepared to be transferred to the patient’s uterus.

How are the embryos transferred back to the uterus?

The doctor and the patient will discuss the number of embryos to be transferred. The number of successfully fertilized eggs usually determines the number of eggs to be placed in the uterus. Embryos are transferred to the uterus with transabdominal ultrasound guidance. This process does not require anesthesia, but it can cause minor cervical or uterine discomfort. Following transfer, the patient is advised to take at least one days bed rest and two or three additional days of rest, then 10 to 12 days later, two pregnancy tests are scheduled to confirm success. Once two positive tests are completed, an obstetrical ultrasound is ordered to show the sac, fetal pole, yolk sac and fetal heart rate.

Embryoscope©

Built into this technology there is a microscope with a powerful camera that allows the uninterrupted monitoring of the embryo during its first hours of life. In this way, we can keep a close eye on the embryo, from the moment when the oocyte is inseminated and begins to divide into smaller and smaller cells, until it can be transferred to the uterus.
