Abdominoplasty & Liposuction
Steps Involved in IVF:
Procedure Description
Abdominoplasty, commonly known as a “tummy tuck,” and liposuction are cosmetic surgical procedures designed to reshape and enhance the body’s contour, particularly in the abdominal area. Abdominoplasty removes excess skin and tightens abdominal muscles, providing a firmer, smoother appearance. This procedure is popular among patients who have experienced significant weight loss or pregnancy, as it addresses loose, sagging skin and weakened muscles that can persist despite diet and exercise. Liposuction, on the other hand, targets fat deposits that are resistant to exercise, allowing for a more sculpted look in specific areas such as the abdomen, thighs, and flanks.
Both procedures can be performed individually or in combination, depending on the patient's goals. When done together, liposuction removes stubborn fat deposits while abdominoplasty smooths and tightens the skin, achieving a balanced, natural-looking result. This combination approach is particularly common among patients seeking a complete abdominal makeover, as it addresses both fat and skin laxity for optimal body contouring.
Abdominoplasty and liposuction are often recommended for individuals who are close to their ideal weight but struggle with body contour issues that do not respond to lifestyle changes. Ideal candidates are non-smokers, in good general health, and have realistic expectations about the outcomes of the procedure. Consulting a qualified surgeon to discuss personal goals, understand the procedure, and evaluate medical history is essential for planning a safe and effective abdominoplasty or liposuction journey.
Procedure Duration
The duration of abdominoplasty and liposuction procedures varies based on factors like the extent of fat removal, whether muscle tightening is involved, and whether both procedures are combined. Typically, an abdominoplasty procedure lasts between two and five hours, with liposuction taking an additional one to two hours if performed simultaneously. In cases where minimal skin tightening and small areas of fat removal are required, the total time can be shorter. However, more extensive procedures will take longer, especially if multiple areas are addressed.
Recovery times for these procedures vary. For abdominoplasty, most patients can expect an initial recovery period of about two to three weeks, with complete healing taking several months. During the first week, patients may experience discomfort, swelling, and bruising, which are common after abdominal surgery. Liposuction, depending on the area treated and the amount of fat removed, has a slightly shorter recovery period. Patients generally return to light activities within a week, but full recovery can take several weeks to months.
A crucial aspect of the recovery phase is adhering to post-operative care guidelines. Wearing compression garments, managing pain as advised by the surgeon, and avoiding strenuous activities are important to ensure proper healing. Regular follow-ups with the surgeon help monitor recovery and address any complications promptly, contributing to successful, long-lasting results.

Risks & Considerations
- Scarring: Both abdominoplasty and liposuction involve incisions, which can lead to visible scarring. Proper wound care and scar treatments can help minimize the appearance.
- Infection: As with any surgery, there is a risk of infection. Patients must adhere to hygiene and follow-up care instructions to reduce this risk.
- Anesthesia Risks: Both procedures typically involve general anesthesia, which can pose risks, particularly for individuals with certain health conditions.
- Blood Clots: Surgical procedures, especially those involving the lower body, increase the risk of blood clots. Moving around after surgery, as advised, is essential to prevent clot formation.
- Unsatisfactory Results: In some cases, patients may not achieve their desired results or may experience asymmetry. A thorough consultation and realistic expectations are important to avoid disappointment.
How to Choose the Right Doctor and Hospital
Choosing the right doctor and hospital for abdominoplasty and liposuction is a vital step in ensuring a safe and satisfying outcome. Begin by researching surgeons who specialize in body contouring procedures and have extensive experience with both abdominoplasty and liposuction. Look for board-certified plastic surgeons with verifiable credentials, as certification ensures that they meet specific educational, training, and ethical standards. Reading patient reviews and testimonials is also helpful, as these provide insight into patient satisfaction and overall quality of care.
In addition to finding a qualified surgeon, evaluate the hospital or clinic where the surgery will be performed. Look for facilities that are well-equipped, adhere to international standards, and have a strong reputation for safety and hygiene. A consultation with the surgeon should address all aspects of the procedure, including risks, recovery, and expected outcomes, to ensure that patients are fully informed and confident in their choice.

Frequently Asked Questions
What actually happens during hyperstimulation of the ovaries?
The patient will take injectable FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) for eight to eleven days, depending on how long the follicles take to mature. This hormone is produced naturally in a woman’s body causing one egg to develop per cycle. Taking the injectable FSH causes several follicles to develop at once, at approximately the same rate. The development is monitored with vaginal ultrasounds and following the patient’s levels of estradiol and progesterone. FSH brand names include Repronex, Follistim, Menopur, Gonal-F and Bravelle. The patient injects herself daily.
What happens during egg retrieval?
When the follicles have developed enough to be harvested, the patient attends an appointment where she is anesthetized and prepared for the procedure. Next, the doctor uses an ultrasound probe to guide a needle through the vaginal wall and into the follicle of the ovary. The thin needle draws the follicle fluid, which is then examined by an embryologist to find the eggs. The whole process takes about 20 minutes.
What happens to the eggs?
In the next step, the harvested eggs are then fertilized. If the sperm from the potential father, or in some cases, anonymous donor, has normal functionality, the eggs and sperm are placed together in a dish with a nutrient fluid, then incubated overnight to fertilize normally. If the sperm functionality is suboptimal, an embryologist uses Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection to inject a single sperm into a single egg with an extremely precise glass needle. Once fertilization is complete, the embryos are assessed and prepared to be transferred to the patient’s uterus.
How are the embryos transferred back to the uterus?
The doctor and the patient will discuss the number of embryos to be transferred. The number of successfully fertilized eggs usually determines the number of eggs to be placed in the uterus. Embryos are transferred to the uterus with transabdominal ultrasound guidance. This process does not require anesthesia, but it can cause minor cervical or uterine discomfort. Following transfer, the patient is advised to take at least one days bed rest and two or three additional days of rest, then 10 to 12 days later, two pregnancy tests are scheduled to confirm success. Once two positive tests are completed, an obstetrical ultrasound is ordered to show the sac, fetal pole, yolk sac and fetal heart rate.
Embryoscope©
Built into this technology there is a microscope with a powerful camera that allows the uninterrupted monitoring of the embryo during its first hours of life. In this way, we can keep a close eye on the embryo, from the moment when the oocyte is inseminated and begins to divide into smaller and smaller cells, until it can be transferred to the uterus.
