LASIK (Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis)

Steps Involved in IVF:

Procedure Description:

What is LASIK?

LASIK, or Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis, is a popular refractive surgery designed to correct vision in individuals suffering from nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism. This procedure reshapes the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, allowing light to be properly focused onto the retina and resulting in clearer vision.

Why would someone need LASIK?

Over time, the eye's ability to focus can degrade due to various factors, including age, genetics, or other external influences. People who are tired of relying on glasses or contact lenses turn to LASIK as a permanent solution to restore their vision. The procedure offers a liberating experience for many, reducing or eliminating the need for corrective lenses.

How does LASIK work?

During the procedure, a small flap is created in the cornea using a microkeratome or a femtosecond laser. The surgeon then uses an excimer laser to reshape the underlying corneal tissue, after which the flap is repositioned. The laser removes microscopic layers of tissue, altering the curvature of the cornea and enabling it to focus light more accurately on the retina.

Procedure Duration:

How long does the LASIK procedure take?

The LASIK surgery itself is relatively quick, typically taking about 10 to 15 minutes for both eyes. The laser treatment, which reshapes the cornea, only takes about a minute or so per eye.

Pre-surgery preparation:

Prior to the actual procedure, patients might spend 30 minutes to an hour at the clinic for preparatory steps. This includes administering numbing drops, conducting a final examination, and answering any last-minute questions.

Recovery time:

Post-procedure, patients often experience improved vision within 24 hours. However, it's advised to rest the eyes and avoid strenuous activities for a few days. Most patients can return to their regular activities within a day or two, but complete healing and stabilization of vision can take a few weeks.

Benefits:

  • Cost-Effective: Many countries offer LASIK at a fraction of the cost compared to Western counterparts without compromising on quality.
  • Advanced Technology: Top medical tourism destinations are equipped with cutting-edge technology, ensuring precision and safety during the procedure.
  • Expertise: Renowned ophthalmologists with vast experience and international training often practice in popular medical tourism hubs.

Risks & Considerations:

  • Post-surgery complications: Like any surgery, LASIK has risks such as infection, undercorrection, overcorrection, and problems with the flap created during surgery.
  • Travel concerns: Consider the proximity to your home, potential language barriers, and travel fatigue.
  • Research is key: It's vital to understand the credentials of the hospital and surgeon. Ensure they have a history of successful LASIK procedures.

How to choose the right doctor and hospital:

  • Check Credentials: Ensure that both the hospital and doctor are accredited by recognized international bodies.
  • Reviews and Recommendations: Seek out reviews from previous medical tourists who underwent LASIK at the desired destination.
  • Experience matters: The more LASIK procedures a surgeon has conducted, the better. Make sure they are experienced in the latest techniques and technologies.
  • Communication: Ensure you feel comfortable with the doctor, that they can answer all your questions, and that there's no language barrier that might affect understanding.

Frequently Asked Questions

What actually happens during hyperstimulation of the ovaries?

The patient will take injectable FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) for eight to eleven days, depending on how long the follicles take to mature. This hormone is produced naturally in a woman’s body causing one egg to develop per cycle. Taking the injectable FSH causes several follicles to develop at once, at approximately the same rate. The development is monitored with vaginal ultrasounds and following the patient’s levels of estradiol and progesterone. FSH brand names include Repronex, Follistim, Menopur, Gonal-F and Bravelle. The patient injects herself daily.

What happens during egg retrieval?

When the follicles have developed enough to be harvested, the patient attends an appointment  where she is anesthetized and prepared for the procedure. Next, the doctor uses an ultrasound probe to guide a needle through the vaginal wall and into the follicle of the ovary. The thin needle draws the follicle fluid, which is then examined by an embryologist to find the eggs. The whole process takes about 20 minutes.

What happens to the eggs?

In the next step, the harvested eggs are then fertilized. If the sperm from the potential father, or in some cases, anonymous donor, has normal functionality, the eggs and sperm are placed together in a dish with a nutrient fluid, then incubated overnight to fertilize normally. If the sperm functionality is suboptimal, an embryologist uses Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection to inject a single sperm into a single egg with an extremely precise glass needle.  Once fertilization is complete, the embryos are assessed and prepared to be transferred to the patient’s uterus.

How are the embryos transferred back to the uterus?

The doctor and the patient will discuss the number of embryos to be transferred. The number of successfully fertilized eggs usually determines the number of eggs to be placed in the uterus. Embryos are transferred to the uterus with transabdominal ultrasound guidance. This process does not require anesthesia, but it can cause minor cervical or uterine discomfort. Following transfer, the patient is advised to take at least one days bed rest and two or three additional days of rest, then 10 to 12 days later, two pregnancy tests are scheduled to confirm success. Once two positive tests are completed, an obstetrical ultrasound is ordered to show the sac, fetal pole, yolk sac and fetal heart rate.

Embryoscope©

Built into this technology there is a microscope with a powerful camera that allows the uninterrupted monitoring of the embryo during its first hours of life. In this way, we can keep a close eye on the embryo, from the moment when the oocyte is inseminated and begins to divide into smaller and smaller cells, until it can be transferred to the uterus.
